Like many folks did during the early pandemic, I adopted 2 kittens from different litters, about 1 month apart in age named Flash and Smokey. I have to admit, I didn't do all the right things when I first introduced them. We adopted a kitty from a high-kill shelter in SoCal last Christmas, had him transported up to SF and at first, everything was cool. Then...something...happened. He began to pee and poop outside of the litter box and worse even, he started peeing on me and my boyfriend WHILE WE WERE SLEEPING...IN OUR BED!!! Needless to say, we quickly became frustrated. I second guessed my decision to save this dude, but turning him in to ACC was never an option. I had previously worked with Daniel at the SFSPCA and when I heard about his new behavior consulting service, I knew if anyone was able to steer us in the right direction, it would be him. Upon arrival, Daniel observed the dynamics of our place. (We have two male mini schnauzers, two very playful adult male cats and one male 18-year-old diabetic and hyperthyroid bull of an old man cat. Yes, we have a LOT of animals and I have no idea how we got our apartment.) He took lots of notes and asked us lots of questions. After about an hour, he came up with some suggestions of things we could and should change. He suggested a larger litter box, more litter boxes throughout the house, possibly eliminating our Clever Cat litter boxes, an escape route from our main litter box "room" and the removal of the door to said room, suggesting maybe he was being stalked or taunted by the other cats and feeling trapped. We removed the door to the cat room and purchased an under the bed storage bin on wheels that we used that as one great, big box on one side of the room and two Clever Cats on the other. We also (reluctantly) added an open box to our living room. There was SOME improvement, but there were still several "accidents". Things remained the same for a few weeks, with Daniel following up regularly to see what changes we had made and giving suggestions of other things we could try. Maybe he didn't like the Clever Cats, etc. Turns out, THAT WAS THE PROBLEM! Once we got rid of those Clever Cats, we got rid of our problem!! Turns out, just because WE liked the Clever Cat boxes because they are so clean, does not mean our little dude did. So we have to sweep litter up? I take care of several community (feral) cats in my yard. All have been through the SPCA Community Cats program. One of the cats, Orange Tom, decided he wanted to be my indoor/outdoor cat. He's a sweet two-year-old who needs a lot of attention. He's playful but can sometimes play too rough with my small, 15-year-old dog (who usually isn't interested) . He also had a disharmonious relationship with the downstairs neighbor's small dog (the dog was afraid of him and he seemed to be bothered by her as well). I'd seen him be a bully toward the other community cats and, not really understanding cat behavior, was anxious about keeping him as a pet. The idea of giving him away was also really upsetting. He returned my emails in a timely manner, asked many questions about our space and cat dynamics, and formulated an effective plan. Our situation was particularly challenging and we had begun talking about placing our cats elsewhere. My husband and I have two male cats that began marking on literally every vertical surface area in the house for nearly a year (windows, walls, chairs, sofas, air filters, refrigerator, doors, aquariums and electronics). When our orphaned kitten, Lucky, came to us at 4 weeks old, we thought, "It's just a kitten...how hard can this be?" One year later, the answer is this: Really hard. Cats can be really freaking hard. Lucky is a highly energetic, yet sensitive soul...and after a series of moves, her need for attention and fear of new people in our home reached its peak. Oh, and it had ruined our social life. I had some work done in my apartment at the end of 2013 and the noise and unfamiliar foot traffic completely freaked my cats out and they started taking their stress out on each other by fighting. At first I thought, "Oh, it's only been a few days since the commotion, so I'm sure they will calm down." Fast forward to a month later, and the fur is still flying. It was time to take action. First I called the SPCA and they quoted me over $300 for animal behavior services and you have to bring your cats to them, which just seemed weird to me since a behaviorist should want to observe the cats in their everyday environment. That's when I took to google to search for a cat behaviorist in San Francisco and lo and behold, the Go, Cat, Go! website site popped up! I e-mailed Daniel with the problem and he got back to me right away and we made an appointment for the following Saturday at my house, for a fraction of the SPCA price. Clearly he appreciates that cat moms and dads want to fix their cat problems ASAP! During our meeting, Daniel reassured me that my cats are actually still BFFs (I thought they started hating each other), but he also provided insight into my cats' behavior and offered many helpful suggestions with ways to relieve stress and tension in the house so that the fighting ends altogether. It's still early after the appointment and there have been a few squabbles (I wouldn't expect things to change overnight), but I woke up this morning with Chloe and Rocky snuggled together next to me on the bed. My cat was having some issues peeing on our furniture (bed and couch) and it got to the point where I was considering taking him to the SPCA because I couldn't figure out how to resolve his issues. Several people recommended I contact Daniel first before making and drastic moves. I am so happy I did! Daniel called me back right away (and saved me from dropping off my cat in haste), calmed me down, and assured me to try a few things first. Daniel came to my boyfriend and my apartment and not only assessed the situation (litter box, space, type of litter, food, potential stresses) and also took the time to really understand our issues, why they may've started, and how to resolve them calmly. He spent quite a bit of time explaining our cat's body language and what he is trying to tell us (which, oftentimes we ignored). I think hearing some of the things Daniel had to say would've been so helpful before our cat even started having issues! Daniel is very professional and extremely knowledgeable. So far, everything he has suggested has helped. By making a few changes, our cat is less stressed out and is much happier and it's only been a couple of days. Hopefully this trend continues! I have spoken with Daniel twice about our difficulty integrating new young cats with our older female. Though we don't live in his area (so couldn't have an in home consult) we used Skype for the appts. I appreciated his detailed information gathering prior to the first session (we filled out a questionnaire about the cats and history of the problem). Daniel was so calm, knowledgable and helpful regarding the issues we have been dealing with, and came up with strategies that have been useful and effective. I am so glad we found him (from a friend on FB). Our cats are doing better and gradually making a reasonable adjustment to each other. I feel better able to respond appropriately to our kitties, and so I feel less anxious and worried about them. I really thought we wouldn't be able to help them live more comfortably together, but things a significantly better over a 3-4 week period. I highly recommend Go Cat Go if you have behavioral issues with your cat/s and are seeking help. Daniel is great! Update 3-13-16: Our cats are living much more comfortably together. This morning they were laying together on our bed, relaxed and comfortable. They are all eating in the same area, their choice. Yes there are occasional hisses and swats, but no big fights. We we're on vacation and our neighbors were supposed to care for our 2-year-old cat. On the 2nd day of our vacation, we received a frantic call from our neighbor. She said that our cat attacked her and would let her near. My wife was so concerned for our cat and the neighbor, she went online to book a flight home. Then I remembered Go Cat Go since I had photographed the feline behaviorist/owner, Daniel. He immediately assured us that our cat Coco was actually doing something easy enough to manage and understand. We arranged for a meeting between Daniel and our neighbor, where upon Daniel became the primary caregiver for Coco. When we returned from our 2 week vacation, we found Coco much like herself when we had departed for our vacation. As for our neighbor, luckily we're still friends. read more
