We visited Buccaneer Bay (previously called Tunnels Through Time) whilst staying with family. We…read moretook a 4 year old boy and a 5 year old girl, both of whom thoroughly enjoyed it. You can either wander through on your own, or as we did, be led by Calico Jack the pirate guide! He was actually excellent, telling the stories of Cornwalls past in a way that engaged both the adults and kids, cracking jokes and being generally piratey! There is s slightly scarier section but with adults present it still wasn't too scary for the little ones, and adds a good entertainment portion to the stories that precede it. The sets and scenes were pretty good, and it was fairly atmospheric for what it was. It's not very big inside, but just big enough that the kids won't get bored. If they find the letters to make up the word of the day along the way they get to have a sweet 'treasure' at the end too, something else to keep them involved. Some of the free local guide leaflets have money off vouchers too that make a good dent on the entry price. When we visited (April 2010) they only accepted cash or cheques too. There's a pay car park just over the road that gives quick access to one of Newquay's beaches too if you want something else to do afterwards. If you go not expecting a day-long adventure but the interesting and entertaining diversion that it is, you won't be disappointed. One final point, the staff there were lovely, very helpful and friendly. I'd go back again.

I think every home should have their own Cap'n Calico!! Our daughter, aged 6, was mesmerised and couldn't stop giggling after swearing the pirate's code and saying 'parle' like she was starring in the Pirate's of the Carribean films!! My two year old was a little weary of the 'scary man with a dirty face' but soon came around looking at the exhibitions and was totally thrilled at steering the Cap'n's wheel...I had to peel his fingers off it!! I cannot express how lovely the staff/owners were, taking time to chat to the children both before and after we went through, and they seemed genuinely passionate about both the attraction and pirates. The gift shop was great, although not massive, it catered for all ages and was very reasonably priced...my daughter was thrilled to have a 'gold' necklace with a Cornish Knocker pendant on it!! (less than £2!!). I don't think it would be suitable for disabled access as we did go up...and back down..stairs a few times - probably best to contact them before making a visit. The exit weirdly came out of the side of the building so we had to go back in the front door to use the toilets & gift shop etc. No hardship for us, but it was down another flight of steps, elderly people may struggle a little. I honestly must say it was a highlight of our week in Cornwall...and we visit several times a year, but would not hesitate on returning to Buccaneer Bay many times. Do take a look at their till...it wasn't working when we were there, but it was a work of art!! Well done Buccaneer Bay - simply brilliant!!!!
