First time at Kaplan Arena and darn shocked that a listing for them was never created considering…read morethis is not a newer building. The arena sits on the campus of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. The road name of Ukrops Way is newer GPS did not work, but Google Maps did. There is a decent size parking lot to one side of the arena. Around the perimeter is street parking. Not sure where all would park if they filled the place up. Kaplan can seat 8,300 and expand to 11,300 when necessary. It was built in 1971 at a cost of 5.3 million and that's over 32 million in today's dollars. The building was formerly known as William & Mary Hall. However the arena proper was known as Kaplan. In 2016 the entire building was renamed the Kaplan Arena to honor former alumni Jane and Jim Kaplan. I attended a Women's basketball game tonight. The men's team also plays here and I assume volleyball but am not sure of any other sport matches. The building has many more uses than just for the university. It has been used for all types of community events from dog shows to car shows. From religious crusades by Billy Graham to presidential stumps. The largest concert was The Police in 1982 with over 13,000 in attendance. It also hosted the 9th G7 Summit in 1983. Some really cool history for sure. The lower level is where you will find the athletic department, coaching offices, a seminar room, medical suite and a gymnastics workout. What a fine building Kaplan Arena is. The modern amenities of newer arenas may be missing, but it continues to serve both the university and community well.

But there've been great acts here over the years: Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead, Bruce, Dave Matthews, and more have been here. Smith's Fort is the site of Captain John Smith's proposed "New Fort" and is located directly across…read morethe James River from Jamestown on the banks of Gray's Creek. In 1609, Captain John Smith began construction of a fort site on the property. The fort was abandoned a few months later due to what would be known as the "Starving Time" in Jamestowne. The earthworks dug 411 years ago in 1609 can still be seen to this day. Captain John Smith built a fort on the south side of the James River as a retreat position should Jamestown be attacked by Virginia Indians or the Spanish. This dower tract of land between two streams was given to John Rolfe in 1614 by Powhatan upon Rolfe's marriage to Pocahontas. It is considered the first land actually given to America by the Indians. Rolfe is known to have cultivated the early tobacco crop on this property known as the Virginia Sweet. Between 1751 and 1765, a brick plantation house was built that still stands today, with much of its interior original pine woodwork still intact. The Manor House exemplifies the upper-middle-class lifestyle enjoyed by the Jacob Faulcon family in 18th-century Surry County. In 1886, the property, then called Gray's Creek Farm, was purchased by a collective group of African American families including Bolling Morris, John and Carter Hardy and Robertson Simmons. By the 1920s, Mr. Morris was the sole owner and he eventually sold it via an agent to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Smith's Fort was later acquired by Preservation Virginia in 1933 and has operated as a museum ever since. Located in the manor house is a print on paper from a steel engraving done by John C. McRae in 1855 entitled, "The Wedding of Pocahontas." It was modeled from an original oil painting by Henry Brueckner in the same year. It depicts the day in April 1614 when Pocahontas was wed to Englishman John Rolfe, an event that initiated 8 years of peace with the Algonquin Indians. The original painting resides in the Getty Museum. This is a Virginia treasure and recommend a visit.

After recently attending an event at this location there are many things that needs to be worked on. The entertainment was wonderful! However, the organization was terrible. No one knew where to go, that you needed beer tickets to obtain beer, or where to go for the bathroom. There was one bathroom to the left of the stage on the hill open for an event where there was 2,000 people! There was an additional bathroom a pretty far distance from the amphitheater towards the front of the park. There weren't any signs to direct you to the park from the parking lot or to show where the VIP area was. Hopefully this location works out the kinks!

I was about to purchase tickets to attend when Yelp had a giveaway on their social media outlets. I entered immediately, and won a tickets for myself an a guest along with another person who entered. The days leading up to the event the communication was fantastic! We arrived a few minutes early. There was still a little set up happening. Closer to 6pm we walked up and checked in. The tent set up was lovely. They suggest wearing comfortable shoes. I second that. It's an outdoor setting with hay, grass and typical holes in the areas walked... it's a farm land and makes complete sense. We were greeted warmly by the host, and owners Caren (CJ) and her husband Billy. The waiter, who so think was their son was great. He was kind and brought us refills of the delicious lemonade. Everyone was helpful and attentive to our needs throughout the evening. The music was great. It added a nice atmosphere in the end. This farm set up started opening to the public about 2 years ago. I enjoyed hearing about their vision and the journey they have done to get where they are. They have worked extremely hard to get where they are now. They have a great positive outlook that helps. Tips: Fans inside the tent circulating air if possible. The humidity was a little much under the tent at times. Walking outside the tent gave us a nice cool off when needed. Charcuterie board and cupcakes. Keep them cool before serving. The cheese and other items were melting or extremely soft. Thank you for a wonderful night an partnering with Yelp. My husband and I enjoyed our first date since moving back to Virginia on orders 15 months ago. We look forward to future engagements.

The heater sits in the middle of the table which is a little awkward for a table of 4 since it blocks the view. It also ran out of propane so we were freezing at the end of the evening. The soup starter was bland but the entree was excellent. The dessert was a cheesecake with chocolate and we felt the chocolate overshadowed the dessert. All in all I think this has great potential but has a few kinks that need to be worked out. Note, the toilets are port-a-potties. The wine tasting was not worth the price, I recommend just buying a glass.
