River Course at Kingsmill On a gorgeous autumn day, we enjoyed a round of golf at the course. Upon arrival, the bag drop area was available to leave our bags. The staff members helped us get our bags secured onto the golf carts. There is a small cooler on the golf cart. After checking in at the pro shop, we found the scorecards by the door. The pro shop had a great selection of golf goodies and I was eager to purchase some items with the Kingsmill logo. We had a wonderful time playing golf at the club during our recent visit. We played the River Course, which is known to host some of the most prestigious PGA and LPGA tournaments. The course is in excellent shape, with beautifully maintained greens and various obstacles that made our game more fun and challenging. Although the James River views are not visible until the last three holes, it was still an excellent way to wrap up our 18-hole round. Two restrooms are located along the course, and the access code is provided at the first hole. Don't forget to jot it down on your scorecard or take a quick snap in case the doors are locked. A beverage cart drove through a couple times to serve refreshing drinks throughout the course to keep us hydrated. A tip: for the par 3's, go left! The staff at the club was exceptionally friendly and supportive, making our experience even more enjoyable. We're already looking forward to our next visit to the town and playing golf at the club again. read more

We played the River course as we are big Dye fans. We weren't aware that VA aerates their courses in the spring, probably wouldn't have booked a 5 day golf vacation if we knew that. We used Golf Zoo and they should have informed us. The course might be in better condition in the next few months. It was challenging and fun. Fun finishing hole. Comfortable carts but no GPS, clean bathrooms on the course. Friendly staff. read more

I don't know how to describe the time I had here, other than amazing. I took up golfing recently, and was able to spend the weekend of stay and play at Kingsmill. It was great to play on the same course as golf legends. The group I was with is Women on Course, all women on the green having fun. I loved the face that the carts drive around to ensure you are hydrated and refreshed. read more

It was an extremely hot day and there wasn't any water on the course at all...along with no trash cans anywhere. I finished and wanted a shower and was told they have no towels. never again. read more

Oh Kingsmill. Your Plantation course was immaculate. The River course? The one that recently hosted the LPGA tour? Oh my. What in the world happened? I was quite disappointed in the condition of the course. Weeds everywhere. Lots of dry/dead spots. So sad. But I still love your courses. The clubhouse is great. The views on the water are amazing. I do hope the next time I come back the River course is top notch, as I last remembered. read more

Short version. Looking at old reviews I see some years The course conditions are good and others not so good. Well this is a not so good year for the plantation course. Booked a golf weekend in the area and played the plantation course. I've heard great things. First the good: the layout of the course is fantastic with wide-open tee shots and plenty of risk reward opportunities. Now the bad: whoever mowed this course set the blade way too low and they were plenty of places where the mower scalped the fairways repeatedly. They were parts of the green that were just sand on the edges. The fridges were horrible and could not putt through them. I expected a lot more for the money I paid and won't be back anytime soon. For that kind of money I could play a dozen other courses within a short driving distance that are in much better condition. The strange part was when I was leaving the course there was a guy mowing more. Maybe let the grass grow a little bit so the weeds don't take over and so that I can actually have a chip shot with grass underneath it. I had one chip shot all day with grass underneath the rest was off of nearly dirt and fairways that were shaved so close it was like a bikini wax. read more

I had a great time at Kingsmill resort. We played the woods course and river course which were both in immaculate condition. I would absolutely play again. The river was tougher than the woods course, but the woods course is the private club. The woods was in great shape, not many people on the course and a fun layout. The river course was a beautiful layout with the last three holes all on the water. read more

Returned to Kingsmill June 2019 the same week as last year. Played the River course both times and an incredible improvement in conditions. Last year the conditions were extremely substandard whereas this year conditions were superb. The difference that ownership and management learned that winter over seeding with rye grass is detrimental to the native Bermuda grass. The fairways were lush and dense, a pleasure to play on, whereas last year nothing but bare dirt and mud. Last year played the Woods course and this year played the Plantation course. Both a real treat. All three courses have their own unique characteristics in terms of playability and aesthetics. The River Course has an up charge because it currently hosts the LPGA and formerly the PGA. Don't let this fool you into thinking it is the superior course as the other two are just as good and depending on individual preferences may even be better. My wife and I played with another couple. The two men are single digit handicap playing the back tees and the women are mid to high handicap. We all enjoyed each course equally. Pace of play was perfect right around 4 hours. All aspects of this resort are excellent and we expect to return. read more

I was really looking forward to playing here. Specifically stayed at the resort so I could play. For the amount they charge to play the river course I expected something much nicer. I wouldn't recommend you play it until they figure out how to get some grass to grow. Mentioning it to the guy in the pro shop did no good. I won't be coming back. read more

I was in a two day tournament here and we played the Plantation Course and the River Course. The staff were very accommodating and they made it easy to find our carts (it was a shotgun start) and head out. They also had a guy driving us to and from the driving range. They did run out of towels for us which was a slight bummer when it started raining. The Plantation Course was a fun design that meandered through a housing development. It's one big 18 hole loop (for example we started on hole #10 and had to drive out for about 15 minutes, no joke). The fairways are very narrow, so if you're crooked off the tee it's not the best course for you. It is, however, a short course even from the tips. Lots of cool holes, a few drivable par 4s, and it's very flat overall. If you're playing it for the first time, buy a course map! The greens are slow, much slower than the practice green so take notice. Overall a fun track, but not one that's too memorable. The River Course deserves a 5/5 stars. It's absolutely fantastic. The final three holes are worth the entry fee. The holes you see from the clubhouse are nice and wide open but the course narrows significantly through the round. Most of the time you're playing through the housing development at Kingsmill so watch out for out of bounds. Same as the other course, buy a course map. There aren't any blind tee shots but there are dangers lurking that you won't see. The greens were smooth and fast but were extremely hard to read. If you have the time read your putts from different angles, but only if you have time. The biggest reason to give this place four stars is the driving range and "chipping" area. Honestly they are the worst practice facilities at any resort I have played. The mats were all tilted for a very uphill lie and they are made of some pretty cheap plastic. You also had to step in front of the mats to use driver off the grass. It was a little uneasy to warm up with golf balls flying by your head. They also use limited flight golf balls! Hard to get prepared for a tournament with this type of set up. The chipping green is just a bunker and some fairway grass for a green. There is also Bermuda grass around it which is nothing like the grass you'll see on the River Course. The only upside to the practice facilities is the putting green which is big and undulating. The grass around that, again, isn't like what they have on the course. Basically spend your time putting if anything else. If you come out here for the LPGA Kingsmill Championship, know that you have a very long walk ahead of you on the River Course, and that there aren't many spots where you can see more than one hole at a time. So pick your favorite players and follow them wearing your most comfortable shoes. I really want to like this place because the River Course is fantastic, but the practice facilities were exceptionally poor when I've heard so many good things about them. Maybe the Woods Course has better ones. Definitely a place I would play again but there is a better golf resort in Williamsburg. read more

Played the Woods Course and it was awesome! Perfect day and the course was in outstanding condition. The course was flat out beautiful. Played in a scramble from the white tees, but would love to tackle it from the tips! Definitely worth the trip to play! People were great, course outstanding ....5 Stars across the board! read more

My husband and I just visited Kingsmill to celebrate our anniversary and had two days of golf instruction with Chris George. What a fantastic experience, on all levels! Chris is a great, intuitive instructor with a terrific demeanor and teaching style. Already, our games are hugely improved. He didn't try to change everything we do, but instead built on our strengths and helped us to achieve far more in our games. He is a gifted instructor and my husband and I agree that it would be worthwhile to check in with him every few months to continue to improve our play. The resort itself is lovely and it really felt that everyone we encountered was happy to be working there! It shows. Excellent food and wait staff, plus a really likable bartender, O'Neil, who takes great care of his customers. We had massages at the spa and again, a marvelous experience. Atmosphere and service were first-rate. In all, it was just grand and we can't wait to return. read more

Played the River Course today from the White tees. A great course. Some really nice holes. It is a championship course so you expect a nice course but it did not disappoint. All three of us rated this a 5 and it was. Sand was white and fluffy, fairways where great and the greens were tough. Talk to the starters, they were right about the greens...they are hard to read. Double breakers, but rolled nice. Remember where the river is, everything breaks to the river (when in doubt). Great course, highly recommend. The only problem is that you have to stay at the Resort to play the courses. We are playing the Plantation tomorrow. read more
