First time at Kaplan Arena and darn shocked that a listing for them was never created considering…read morethis is not a newer building. The arena sits on the campus of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. The road name of Ukrops Way is newer GPS did not work, but Google Maps did. There is a decent size parking lot to one side of the arena. Around the perimeter is street parking. Not sure where all would park if they filled the place up. Kaplan can seat 8,300 and expand to 11,300 when necessary. It was built in 1971 at a cost of 5.3 million and that's over 32 million in today's dollars. The building was formerly known as William & Mary Hall. However the arena proper was known as Kaplan. In 2016 the entire building was renamed the Kaplan Arena to honor former alumni Jane and Jim Kaplan. I attended a Women's basketball game tonight. The men's team also plays here and I assume volleyball but am not sure of any other sport matches. The building has many more uses than just for the university. It has been used for all types of community events from dog shows to car shows. From religious crusades by Billy Graham to presidential stumps. The largest concert was The Police in 1982 with over 13,000 in attendance. It also hosted the 9th G7 Summit in 1983. Some really cool history for sure. The lower level is where you will find the athletic department, coaching offices, a seminar room, medical suite and a gymnastics workout. What a fine building Kaplan Arena is. The modern amenities of newer arenas may be missing, but it continues to serve both the university and community well.

But there've been great acts here over the years: Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead, Bruce, Dave Matthews, and more have been here. Wish they could get some more high rate acts here but mostly what the kids are listening too today, feathers logo missing.

There were enough tables…read moreand chairs for everyone and having a Starbucks here was great since the conference coffee wasn't the best. The bathrooms are clean and were regularly cleaned while the conference was in progress. I wish there was a water bottle filling station, but the water fountains did the trick. Like with most conferences, the chairs can grow to be uncomfortable after a while. The audiovisual equipment worked great and no one seemed to have tech issues. Now, unlike most conferences, the temperature inside was perfect. I also liked how close the parking garage was to the building, which made finding check-in easy. Since this is an arena, there were people playing basketball during the time we were there and they rang the buzzer a few times, which made the whole room jump every time (it became quite funny after a while).

I have been here for a number of occasions, graduations and other events so this visit was no different as far as the set up and layout of the events. You walk in the front entrance and through metal detectors then you find your seats and if you have any questions or concerns there are ushers to assist you at every level of the establishment!. I took off a star because the concert event was supposed another group perform but that group never showed up! But I refuse to let that stop me from attending another event here.

Let me say we are BIG concert goers and visit many venues in Northern Virginia, Richmond Area and…read morethe Tidewater Area. With that said - this is a really decent venue. First the venue itself. After attending several events here in the past couple years, we have never seen an issue before. Staff and security have always been pleasant and helpful. The cleanliness of the grounds, facility and even the restrooms have always been kept well. Food & beverage prices are not the worst for a venue. Now as for my rating. I will easily give this location a 5 star rating. But I would be wrong if I didn't mention a real issue that occurred on May 3, 2024 - General Parking. Was just awful. As you can see from the picture you can see the entrance to the area my small Hyundai had to jump over. Someone put a tiny board to I guess "help" cars get up over the curb. Needless to say it was worthless. Now there is construction all over the area and I'm guess this is why they are making this area General Parking. Since I don't recall ever having an issue until now. So I didn't ding the facility on this, but my guess is the city of Portsmouth is mostly responsible for this issue. But it is a real problem. Also recommend that if you're going to a show during this early 2024 season that you see if parking is going to be a problem. I don't know how long this is going to last. Parking in this area quickly filled up - causing folks to double and triple park. So go early to get a spot and be prepared to tailgate for a little bit at the end of the night so you can move your vehicle out.

The Band was all we really heard until they told the band to stop so we could sing with them. Love this group!! They need Sound Editing so they will not blow our eardrums out and we can actually hear the group singing. We left early, but I still love Floetry!! I was excited to see them LIVE!

Also I'm not a soccer fan so the chances of my future attendance at a Kickers game are slim to none. I do know some larger-scale events are held here, though. The stadium could definitely use a touch of paint. It's clearly been around for a while. But the field was nice and made for good bocce ball throwing. The stands were fine too. I didn't use the restrooms or buy any concessions. I'd return in the future if a festival or event sounds fun.

This place was one of my first jobs as a teenager. I worked for the University of Richmond sporting events as an usher. As I sat with friends on the "visitor" side of the stadium, I was able see the old sections of the stadium I actually worked. I hope the Kickers games can start to bring in larger crowds to start to fill that side again. It was depressing to see how old the "home" section looked. Staff at the stadium were friendly and helped us make sure we were in the correct area for seating. Shortly after taking our seats, we were upgraded to VIP seats thanks to Lauren's social media talents! We also got other freebies from Chick Fila and won many certificates during the frisbee toss at halftime. It was a wonderful Saturday night spent with great people enjoying one of the few professional sports Richmond VA has to offer.
