Today I drove from Santa Fe to Albuquerque for my hair appointment with Jessi Campbell at Gloss Salon. We confirmed via the usual text system and I had it in my calendar. I get there and the staff tells me she is not there. She thought she had booked me for 11:30 and 2 pm ... I never agreed to an entire day of color - never have never will. Base color plus maybe 3 or 4 highlights .. that is what we agreed to. I have worked with the best colorists in NYC, LA, San Francisco. Base plus a few highlights is 1.5 hours max ... I've been going to Tiffany Romero to get my hair done for years now and she just recently moved salons, and is now at Gloss. My first time here was the other day and it was was a very pleasant experience. I liked that the salon was smaller (than the last one) and had only 5 booths. It makes it feel more personal and not so big and empty. The salon is still a work in progress (bare walls, etc) but the decorating they have done so far is sheik and modern. Location is nice because it's still close to Nob Hill, and you can actually park in a parking lot and not have to drive around searching for a spot! I have been salon hopping for the past year, unable to find a salon or stylist I really like. Riann was amazing - she took my dark hair (with a giant section of stubborn bright blue dye) to a natural looking blonde in two sittings. She immediately understood what I wanted. I like to leave some decisions up to the stylist since they know more than me about hair, and some stylists take that to mean you don't really care how your hair looks and sort of phone it in, but Riann really took it upon herself to make sure my hair looked really great and was up to her own high standards. Also, every hairstylist I have ever had has been a lovely person and I genuinely enjoy talking to them and hearing about their lives. I'm not saying that making conversation with the person doing my hair is unpleasant or burdensome. But...I am an introvert and if it were all the same to everyone either way, I'd just as soon not make small talk for several hours while my hair gets dyed. Riann is perfectly friendly and she's happy to talk to you if you talk to her, but she's not super chatty. She mostly just thought her thoughts and I read work emails on my phone and it was quiet bliss. Overall, I am sad I'm moving out of town just when I've finally found a stylist who I love. read more

I went in to get a perm with Jen. I wish I could say it was a good experience, but it was my worse hair nightmare. Jen showed me some pictures of clients who had been given perms. I told her I wanted more curl than what I saw, so I showed her two photos one of which I liked and the other which I said was too curly. I specifically said I didn't want kinky hair. Well, when I saw it after she finished the process, my hair was KINKY. I expressed to Jen that I was very dissapointed. Her only answer was "You didn't like the pictures I showed you." My response was "This is curlier that the picture I showed you which was too curly." No response from Jen. I was charged the full $212 and given two one ounce shampoo and conditioner. One month later my hair is frizzy and uglier than I ever imagined it could be. I never got an apology or even close to an admission of failure to get what I went in for. read more
