The day we were here, the beach was littered with the bodies of cannon ball jellyfish, which are surprisingly solid, so watch your feet. This area has some inland water that is apparently permanent enough that they've put pontoon bridges over it, which is kind of cool. The beach here is a little bit wider than on other nearby areas, so the tide is not forcing you to literally sit on a dune and you can walk around the surf fishers. So it is a decent ocean beach, if still on the crowded side.

So many restaurants and shops to choose from it is hard to pick a favorite. You must check out the Lemon Bar, which is an outdoor venue with a beach view. The Lemon Bar offers live music, drinks and food. Next is Pete's, the oldest bar in the area. It's divey vibe is a must for locals. If you like to play pool, this is your spot. Next is Island Girl, offering many types/flavors of cigars and draft beer. Sliders Oyster Bar is another local favorite offering food and drinks. Across the street and on the beach is the Seahorse Inn. This is the best spot to stay at the beach on a budget and is in the center of all the fun. The only downside is parking. There are two pay lots and street parking, which use to be free but now you pay at the machine. Be careful not to park in lots with towing signs (if you see not visiting the specified businesses).

There is something here for everyone and for people of all abilities. Most of the main part of the island is flat, including from the dock and up to the ruins (it's about 0.4 to half a mile from the dock to the ruins--and there are beach wheelchairs). There's also a main road that traverses the island from one end to the other for about 18 miles that can be traveled by bicycle. There's also an inn and multiple historical structures you can visit. You can also visit a beautiful, mostly empty beach! I got off at the first stop, which is the most challenging stop, meaning I had to climb over sand dunes to get to the beach. It was QUITE the workout and exhausting (I felt it for days after). Someone told me that the second ferry stop is a much easier, more direct path to the beach. This was a wonderful, serene location. I saw several groups of horses along my hike. The greenery is beautiful. I wouldn't mind coming back and setting up camp (permit required) so I can travel the whole island on bike and by foot. Spending more time on the tranquil beach. I wouldn't spend time at the end, as it's 900-1000 dollars or more per night with a two night minimum. If you're looking to visit the island during the day, the RiverView Hotel is RIGHT THERE, essentially directly across from the ferry, and costs about 200 a night for great vintage rooms with comfy beds. Please see my reviews of the ferry and Molly's tours to build a whole itinerary. You'll never see anything else like this, anywhere else in the world probably. It's a fairly cost effective trip, with the ferry costing just over 40 bucks round trip, the inn costing about 200 a night, and the island entry fee being just a few bucks.

We love to get here early to find a good spot, but be mindful that the beach can get busy during peak season. We met a couple with their young daughter who was scared to walk down to the beach after reading about the "wildlife" that was present (see the sign). My husband solved their "problem" by telling the little girl that all those fish, etc. were now asleep so she shouldn't be scared. We got a very heartfelt (but surreptitious) thank you.
