The beaches on Jekyll Island are awesome. Don't get me wrong, the water is still murky, but if you're looking for lots of space and dusty, fine sand this is a great place. Jekyll Island has a lot of beach to it and lots of parking around the island. The $8 fee to get in ensures the upkeep and aesthetics to the island. My kids had a blast running around in the sand sand water. The showers on and off the beach were also super helpful in getting the sand off of us.

Large grassy areas between parking lot & beach/bike paths. Picnic pavilions, restrooms & dog stations scattered throughout

Daytrip | Searched for Island Treasures on Jekyll Island (annual hunt for hidden Glass Floats - look it up for more info). Wasn't lucky enough to find one but explored Driftwood Beach, the historic area, Great Dunes Park, Beach Village, had a picnic lunch and hid some painted rocks. Great Dunes Park (and the island in general) has a great, wide bike paths. There's large grassy areas here perfect for throwing the football around (which we did), bike racks, dog-poop stations and, of course, easy access to the beach. Fortunately, we planned ahead and brought a picnic. I was fully expecting to use a picnic blanket but was pleasantly surprised with the covered picnic pavilions which also have grills if you need them. Activities: There is a volleyball court & bocce ball at Great Dunes Park. 9-hole mini golf is across the way and bike rentals available nearby if you didn't bring your own. Location: The park shares the same parking lot as the convention center and is also near New Beach Village (common space with shops/eateries) & the Westin. There's a ton of parking spaces available. Restrooms: Very well-kept & clean (much better than the restrooms in the historic area which had mud tracks everywhere!). We visited midday on a Sunday in January so I'm curious how well it's kept up during their busier months. There's supposedly a playground nearby as well but I guess I overlooked it this visit.

This is a beautiful place to park and use as you base to explore the island for a day if you're day tripping to Jekyll and have a bike! There are several beach access points along this huge parking lot, with picnic pavilions, public bathrooms, and a snack cafe (open seasonally). Beach shower and foot wash stations available at each beach access point. Handicap/bike/stroller ramps at some access points too. Yes, biking is allowed on the beach at Jekyll. Dogs allowed on leash at this beach (but not all Jekyll beaches). Best of all, it's all free! The main path running parallel to the parking lot is part of the island perimeter bike path, so it's a great place to park and bike!

Came out here for the first time today and decided to post this review so other curious people will get a good idea of what to expect so here goes! The good: Parking was great there weren't a ton of people out on the beach either, granted school just started so it's kinda hard to tell what the beach is like in full swing. The showers and bathrooms are nice and clean, and there is a changing room inside the bathrooms as well. There was a ton of wildlife including several species of crabs, several species of lizards, and other marine life. This beach is pretty awesome for shell collecting as well. As I mentioned earlier it wasn't crowded at all in fact there was barely anyone in the beach so there was a lot of room to explore. The bad: We made the mistake of coming out at low tide which means the water was muddy as all get out. My kids loved it but it wasn't awesome for wading around in. After the first few steps into the water you'll end up in ankle deep mud which wasn't terrible but I'm sure would bother some folks. I spoke to some regulars and they said the water is a lot better before low tide when the mud hasn't been all stirred up. I'd definitely try coming out here again but earlier in the day before the tide starts coming back in.

Beautiful views all day long. Nice and clean park. I didn't see any trash on my visit which always makes me happy when i'm this close to the beach. The sidewalk winds all around the area and it's a great way to visit some of the shops and get in some exercise. There are plenty of places to access the beach as well as a lot of trees for shade. They also have some pavillions and picnic tables. I would definitely come back each time I'm in this area . Highly recommended

Why the great review?…read more Besides being off the beaten path (south along the beach road to the Soccer Field Signs), it's the most accessible. Parking was a breeze. A small lot right by the boardwalk. And not that many people parked there when we went. The boardwalk itself has no steps. It's wide (you could easily take a wheelchair or a stroller here) and it is fairly level. Most other beaches on island require a painful trek up some wooden steps, then a long hot walk over a wooden boardwalk over the dunes, and then a steep stairway down to the beach. And another long walk to the water. We were ecstatic when we saw this. Only later did we read that the reason the walkway is so wide and smooth was that it was a shooting location for the film, Glory (1989). The walkway was built so that all the movie crew equipment could be easily transported. We easily made the walk over the dunes and pools to the beach. Kicking off our shoes (we weren't in beach attire), we strolled to the water's edge and up and down the beach collecting a few shells and enjoying the cool water. So, even though there are no facilities here, this was our favorite beach of all that we visited while we were here.

I am a huge fan of the 1989 movie Glory. So on my recent trip to Jekyll Island, I rode down to the…read moreJekyll Island soccer complex, and checked out the beach and boardwalk. This place is about a mile South past the Hampton Inn, and you turn left into the complex. Look for the Jekyll Island soccer complex sign. When you turn in, there will be a soccer field on the left and right side of the road. At the end of the road is the boardwalk, and a small parking area. According to what I read, the producers of the movie built the boardwalk to transport equipment out to the beach, where the final scene (attack of Fort Wagner) was filmed. Very calm and peaceful place. No facilities that I noticed.

Hiking and biking trails are NOT the same thing as a campground!!!! I hope Yelp can get its act together to acknowledge the trails on this island, which are a huge draw for visitors, and which have their own web presence as acknowledged by the Golden Isles tourism org, as well as the state parks system! JEKYLL ISLAND TRAIL SYSTEM So this review goes with the dozens of photos I posted of the trails all over the island, better known as the Jekyll Island Trail System. JI has over 25 miles of paved trails throughout the island. They also have dirt/sand trails, and gravel trails. Most trails are handicapped accessible, though I'd stick to the paved ones if exploring on wheels of any kind. It is very popular to circumnavigate the perimeter of the island, which can be done, nonstop, in under an hour on bike. But you can easily spend a day traveling this island by bike if you pause to take in all the sights. I would not call any of the trails difficult, neither for biking, nor for walking. The island is mostly flat, so virtually no inclines at all, and the paths are so well-maintained that you will never encounter overgrowth or mud or anything on the paved or boardwalk trails. From Corsair Beach Park, northward, one can ride their bike on the beach, including all over Driftwood Beach, which is arguably the main attraction of not only Jekyll Island, but all of the Golden Isles put together! Other worthy stops include the Historic District, St. Andrews Picnic Area, and Clam Creek Picnic Area. But those are just highlights. Bikes can't go on the southern beaches because it is a haven for sea turtle nests. However, you can chain your bike in the parking lot and walk these beaches, which are worth every second of detour. Beach Village is another fun stop, and the perimeter bike trail goes right through it. Beach Village houses Love Shack inside Jekyll Market, which is my top recommendation for a food stop! On the southern end of the island, there are a lot of inland trails, running through swamp, and under thick tree canopies, allowing you to really explore the innards of the island, and a lot of wildlife. At the northern end, between Clam Creek and Driftwood Beach, there is a trail through the swamp that has beautiful views in every direction, especially at sunset. More toward the center of the island, Tupelo Trail runs past Horton Pond, and Shell Rd. Trail navigates some of the best wildlife spotting areas on the island.
