Antiquteas High Tea & Dessert Bar

Antiquteas High Tea & Dessert Bar

Adelaide loves a high tea. It's a really popular addition to the repetoire of pubs and hotels all…read moreover town looking to extend their customer base and have a greater number of bums on seats before that 5pm mark. That said, it means there is a fair bit of choice for the consumer and competition keeps prices affordable and experiences memorable. Having visited several other venues offering high tea around town my girlfriends (and 1 brave boyfriend) were overjoyed to discover there is now a venue in Hahndorf whose primary aim is to provide a specialised high tea service. Antiquteas is on the main street of the historic german town. It is a space inexpensively furnished a little too sparsely with the chintzy, scrolled and frilly garb you would expect from a high tea joint. The service was a little strained but our waitress tried hard enough to be affable... I get the impression this was a little difficult for her. My friend who organised the event said she had been incredibly helpful in the planning stages and they had even arranged to cater for our vegetarian friend who is on a crazy gluten free kick recently, WOW! In my mind thatt is above and beyond. I would have laughed at anyone who suggested I provide a gluten free high tea for them... what is it other than white bread sandwiches with no crusts, scones and pastries??! Anyway - so they have to be recognised for catering for my crazy friend. The sitting started at 11am and a welcoming glass of bubbly had me quite merry on my empty stomach. Each person was catered for with three small fingers of sandwich... one cucumber (traditional!), one curried egg and one smoked salmon and tomato and a tiny fairy sized egg and bacon quiche. There was then a warm scone with jam and cream and a selection of four petit fours, a lemon meringue cheesecake square, tiny banoffee pie, a choc dipped strawberry and a little choc mousse cup. I think they've probably got the quantity of food bang on, although savoury lovers like me may find this is one more appropriate for the sweet tooths of this world. There were just two teas available, Earl Grey and English Breakfast... both were a little underwhelming taste-wise. It was all wrapped up by 12:30 and we were the last group left sitting in the venue. While die hards may want to give this a go I won't bother going back.

I have had many high tea's over the world, and his is the best Adelaide (hills) has to offer…read more Firstly most places in Adelaide that offer high tea simply get it wrong. I am often given a porcelain-ware coffee/tea cup, and the staff serve you with old/strong tea or coffee. Antiquteas is a breath of fresh air, it is delightfully decorated with tasteful furniture and, to my great relief, fine bone china tea cup and saucer set with matching side plate (Royal Albert to be precise). We had our own silver tea service with loose leaf tea. Later hot water was added to freshen our tea to extend our wonderful experience. The savoury and sweets selection was delicious. After speaking with the owner, the selections change daily depending on what she prepares, so I will definitely return. Thank you for getting it Right!
