I only visit Santa Cruz twice a year, max, but I've actually listened to KZSC 88.1 more on my…read moredrives down the 101 near the towns of Gonzales and Soledad than I have when driving around Monterey Bay. Normally at that point of the drive, it's early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, so I often hear the same DJs or at least the same shows that have been hosted by different DJs--college students, I assume. The music can be good, bad, or totally random, especially how the songs are juxtaposed. That's the beauty of true college radio, and I don't begrudge them their poor taste or lack of knowledge of seminal bands from the '80s and '90s--and yes, I know that they were born in the 2000s, but I was born in the late '70s and I still knew from a young age who Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many of the Motown artists were. What does bother me about this station--and something ugly about true college radio--is how much dead air there is. It's not just too much time between songs or occasionally hearing hot-mic incidents; it's a more regular thing, and I've heard the same DJs apologize for the same issue over and over. Again, I get it that these are (mostly) college kids who are learning a skill, but they should be better, which leads me to believe there's very little to no engineering help for the DJs. There's also too much advertising, but I can't single KZSC out for that, and some of the hyper-local ads are funny. I'm glad it's my audio companion for at least part of my regular trips to SoCal, but it could be better. And they need more shows devoted to music.

KZSC is always there for me. A student run radio program…read morethat covers all grounds. From "for fun" segments like tarot card and star sign readings to organized playlists by the students that branch into new genres and subcategories of music per student hosting, the fun never stops. This spanish radio station adds itself to the growing list of countries aside from the USA of…read moremellow music radio stations with the KISSfm name... some of the countries already having KISS music stations are the UK, Germany, Brazil, Australia, and 20+ others, and growing every year. Started in Spain in 2002, signs soon after were put up all over Rota where I live and I tuned in for a change from the talkative spanish stations I'd swap out daily.... the KISS sound was very good with - back then - seemingly hours of non-stop relaxing, mellow music without commercials. While that has changed, if you like american and spanish music and wan a good mix, this is your station! With different frequencies to tune in depending on your spanish province, you can hear the great music that KISSfm offers. While they list their music as being adult contemporary, I've heard rap (rarely), country, R&B, and folk played, but all good (except for that rare rap). They're starting to talk a bit more than previously, which I don't like... but still... the music is outstanding and the spanish mix is quite excellent. Granted, you may hear every song played in the first hour of the day a few more times later throughout the day but as I said: it's all great music. During the nights, I think it's a tape running as I hear few commercials and occasionally that dreaded DEAD AIR, though these days it's getting to be a rare event... thank goodness!! In the mornings now, they air traffic incidents in the principle major cities: Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid which is quite useful. I would say 90% of the music heard - and I've been listening to this music non-stop for over six years - is repeated each and every day, and just a few thrown in to show they DO occasionally air something new. If your primary language is english, this would be a great way to brush up on your spanish skills, though some of the DJs talk quite quick.... think machine-gun!!! hahahahaa in Rota the frequency to tune in is 95.4FM though there are separate freqs available for Sevilla and Jerez.
