Put simply KFJC kicks ass. I grew up in the bay area and listened to the station a lot in the 80s. I moved away from the area for 12 years and was elated that the station was still going strong when I returned. In a world where radio has mostly gone corporate and has become lackluster, pre-programmed garbage. KFJC is a sparkling nugget of radio weirdness. So I'm going to start off by saying that I'm biased in the fact that my old man used to DJ at KFJC for most of my teen years (I'm 28 now) and got to meet a lot of the great folks who volunteer and are still volunteering here today...many times I scaled the walls of vinyl...looking at all kinds of different albums...all while watching my old man make segways (sp?) and stumbling over PSA's calling for some kind of community action. Beyond the value of nostalgia, KFJC is truly a one of a kind college radio station. They feature many "specialty" shows. Such as Robert Emmet's "Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show" that features nothing but music from movie and tv soundtracks. Thanks to Robert, I have a total appreciation for people like Bernard Herman and Elmer Bernstein. Spliff Skankin' does "Jah's Music" which is non-stop reggae sounds and Ann Arbor hosts a show on Wednesday mornings called "Dancing in the Fast Lane"...full of toe-tapping vibrant sounds from around the world. This is just a sample of what KFJC has to offer. I do miss "The Big Guitar Show" with Myke Destiny and "House of Games" with Jack Diamond...great stuff... The point to all of this is simple : KFJC has music for all tastes...you just have to keep an open mind. Many times their music caters to the off-the-wall indie fan who wouldn't hear a minute of these sounds on any Clear Channel station. Other college radio stations will play some more commercial independent music but KFJC really aims to play music that is unheard in many cases...bands that you have never heard of. Some of the more interesting music (depending on the artist...it might just be "sounds") can be heard during the graveyard shift where often times new DJs just fresh out of Radio 90A (the introduction class that is taught to all of KFJC's DJs via Foothill College...where the station is located) can get some "behind the mic" time and learn the ropes. It seems late night graveyard shifts, depending on the DJ, will bring out some odd material. I remember hearing a single track being played for nearly an hour of some eerie organ music and someone repeatedly banging on what sounded like a metal door. Yes, this went on for at least 30 minutes. Now living in Southern California, I listen to KFJC online...always something new to be heard...good for background music while at work or at home doing the dishes. KFJC often times gives back to their listeners by way of gifts for donations. They also put on fan get togethers like their listener appreciation bowling party as well as the always fun "Psychotronix Film Festival". I wouldn't recommend KFJC's programing to everyone. While this is unfortunate, it can be summed up to the fact that not everyone can keep an open mind, especially in these days of "American Idol" and Clear Channel dominated mass marketed packaged music. The sounds of KFJC are for those who can appreciate real diversity. All you need is an open mind and I'm sure something will click...then you will be hooked...fun isn't it? read more

My all time favorite radio station, and I dare say, one of the best college stations in the country. I took the radio 90A class here one summer, and volunteered at Summer Surf too. The very first rock concert I ever attended was the Ramones at the Greek Theater in Berkeley in 1992, with a pair of passes I won on KFJC. The last pair of passes I won was to see Nick Cave at the Warfield in 2003. There's no way in hell I'd have gotten them if I'd tried to call in to a show on LIVE105 or some other commercial rock station (if they even knew who Nick was in the first place). Even though I can't get this station from where I live anymore, I still keep it on the presets in my car, for those odd occasions I find myself cruisin' down the peninsula, looking for some action. read more

One thing about non-corporate radiostations is that they don't feel compelled to force corporate rock down your throat. I stream KFJC's music feed all the time at home and at work and my favorite DJ is Ophelia Necro... It's good to hear relevant music created recently instead of all the crap I am forced to listen to on even the sattelite radio stations (Yes, I have Sirius too... Howard Stern is addictive). I love KFJC. I miss some of the old shows I used to hear a very long time ago such as Dennis the Menace, Robin Graves and Phil Dirt. I am stoked to hear Dominic Trix and Spliff Skankin' are still around. Currently I think that Joe Ed Dick has the best show called Lubbuck or Leave it.. For quite a few years KFJC was my favorite radio station of all time. I loved it so much that, for my birthday, my wife donated at the $150 level so I could have an hour on the air with my favorite KFJC DJ. She didn't realize my favorite DJ was Uncle Al, so she picked Cy Thoth instead (A DJ who I still enjoyed very much). Cy Thoth gave me a personal call, which I have to say honestly was quite a treat considering how gregarious and unique he was (RIP, Cy Thoth). I thanked him and told him that I was going to select Uncle Al instead. I received an email from the KFJC manager at the time, don't remember his name, confirming my wife's donation and discussing the details of getting on the air. I replied and told him I'd like to go on with Uncle Al. Never heard from him again even after multiple emails. I Googled Uncle Al, found his email address, and sent him an email asking if I could go on the air with him. A little creepy, sure, but I didn't have much choice after the KFJC manager stopped responding and I didn't have any way to get in touch with him otherwise. Uncle Al responded in the affirmative, stating "We can probably do that." I wrote him back and thanked him, then promptly never heard from him again even after emailing a few more times asking about setting the date. That was the last of that, and frankly I feel like I got ripped off. They did not uphold their end of the bargain. But it wasn't so bad, KFJC was still a great radio station, so I continued to listen. Then Cy Thoth died. From that point forward the programming of the station changed dramatically for the worse over time. KFJC used to be a station where you never knew what you were going to get, and it was a mix of awesome and horrible music. But even the horrible music was so horrible it was like an auditory car accident and you couldn't stop listening. The good stuff was amazing and the bad stuff was so bad it was interesting. But that's changed now. I get in the car in the morning and it's a 20-minute extended track off of the "Sounds of Air Conditioners Through Distortion Pedals" compilation. On the commute home it's a track off of "High School Bedroom Casio Drones". I keep trying to like it but the good stuff that used to offset the bad stuff is not on anymore, and the bad stuff isn't interesting now. Between that and the bad customer service, the station is pretty much dead to me. Except Uncle Al's show, which I still love. Although every time he comes on and starts talking between tracks, in my head I'm like "Thanks for nothing". Now I have much better luck listening to KZSU and Telepathic Juan's awesome show. I keep KFJC on my car radio presets just in case it eventually morphs back to what it once was. EDIT: After this review was posted, the KFJC manager called me to apologize and make things right. Thank you, KFJC, my faith in humanity is restored. I changed the rating from two to four stars. Now if only they'd play a little less of the air conditioner sounds... read more

KFJC is a real asset to this community. A gem. Having lived in a few different cities in the US and Europe, I can say this: Many cities have a few good radio stations to listen to. The Bay Area, in my opinion, has one good radio station to listen to: KFJC. When I say "listen", I don't mean have on in the car, or while you're working, or really doing anything else besides listening. Just sit and listen -- for a while, more than 5, 10, 20 minutes. Just listen for a good, long while. Steep yourself in the programming. You'll experience auditory adventures that you can't experience anywhere else in the Bay Area. Prove me wrong! read more

So when you tune in, it will be a totally unique experience every time. There are the rock-solid DJs that have seemingly been there forever and the newest of seeds planting themselves in the soft, fertile ground of KFJC airwaves. I may be in SD but I always stream in on Saturday mornings when I listen faithfully (http://www.kfjc.org/netcast/index.php) to Robert Emmet and his excellant "Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show" Each Saturday 9am-Noon nothing but cool soundtracks, Spagetti Westerns, Bollywood weirdness,some Bob & Ray, B movie Therimin s-tracks,Multiplication Rock, PSA's and commercials from the 50's 60's 70's and all points in between. Not my first choice, some showtunes (Mothers favorite-sic) stuff at times. Nice background to read the paper and get a start on the weekend. read more

I just moved to PA and was flipping stations sunday night, and caught "It has a beat.....with Belladonna" which induced much head-nodding. 89.7 Hell yeah. I think this is the best college radio station around. I realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I like that they don't seem to have too much talk or sports; they have music, all kinds. I often seem to catch their bluegrass/folk/country show(s) which play great stuff. And they're as indy as KALX, to my ear anyway, but reception is much better down the Peninsula. If you're tired of hearing songs you've heard a hundred times on the radio you need to open your mind and give KFJC a try. Have a look at their schedule and have a listen to a show that you think may interest you. They play a lot of ambient, which I love but realize is not for everyone. On Sunday between noon-3:00 they have the Hippies Graveyard. If you like 60's rock you'll love that show. That show has a lot of brilliant music that other stations have allowed to fall into obscurity. read more

KFJC Rocks! I've been listening since 1983 or so and I've always enjoyed the variety of music and rarely hear the same tracks twice. The DJ's are all great and each has their own style and personality! In 2005 I met a beautiful woman outside my job and we began dating. A few weeks later she told me she was a DJ at KFJC! Low and behold, it was Natasha! Every Friday night I would put on my headphones and listen to her entire show, once in a while she would play my requests and even a few that only her and I knew about! We're no longer together, but I still listen to KFJC whenever I can...It's my source for sound!! read more
