As a Soulard resident, there's a special place in my heart for Globe Drug. Is it the squeaky clean corporate convenience stores that are on every street corner in the USA? Surely not. Does it have so many random items that you're bound to find what you're looking for and more. Yup. It took me almost two years in Soulard to venture into Globe Drug. It's on the east side of 7th, and I rarely have reason to go over that way, and honestly didn't know what to expect. I had heard through the grapevine that they offered a lot of really unique and cheap Mardi Gras decorations and figured that my time had come to visit this Soulard staple. Entering into this very vintagey looking store, you get the vibe that not much has changed since the 50's. From the sign outside to the floors to the shelves of products that create a maze through the store, it all feels from a totally different era. And I was seriously shocked by the selection. Things I would not have expected lined the shelves. They had everything from drinkware and tiki torch fuel to greeting cards and cake mix. I honestly didn't know that they also offer a huge selection of alcohol! That was the biggest find of my trip. If I'm ever in a pinch and need to pick up a bottle of this or case of that, Globe Drug might just be the place in Soulard to stop.

I love this store but its not for everyone. Brian was correct in his review when he described it as similar to Big Lots. The selection of products here is pretty random but they always have a really nice selection of microbrews and wines as well as chocolates that they make on site. They have really great chocolate covered strawberries around valentines day. Prices are always super low here. Globe has been around for many decades and there used to be a store located downtown and a couple locations on Cherokee street. This is the only location left. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. I always see the same people working every time I go. This is a great place to stop by after Soulard Market or after a visit to Johns Donuts.

They made a fresh pot of coffee and even went the extra mile to go get ice as we came in later in the evening and they had run out. I did tell them they didn't need to, but he insisted which I thought was outstanding. This quaint little café is so charming inside. It allows people to gather eat a sweet treat and have general conversation conversations where you can actually hear one another. They do have outside seating too. The chocolate cake was soft and as a non-cake lover I found this very delicious. Definitely worthy of sharing. I ordered a quiche to go. I had mentioned they didn't have the spinach feta pastry that I had before. The gentleman stated we have some in the back, I'm happy to get you one. So I ordered that too. And although this was only our second time coming, the fact that they'll make a fresh pot of coffee in my opinion is key to a great café. I will keep this in my rotation of places to go.

As I was walking to the door, I see a man cleaning the tables. He walks toward the door as I'm walking up to it. We're literally standing face to face with the door in between us. I smile, he is stone faced. I go to open the door as he walks away. The door is locked. I try a few more times, thinking maybe it's me. I look around at the hours again, but next to it is a "we're open" sign. I try maybe 3-4 times more before I give up. I walk to the window and he's sitting at a table toward the back, looking at me. We just look at each other, then he looks at his computer. I turn toward my car, then turn back around and he's still looking at me! I sat in my car, confused. He never looked back up from his computer, so I left. Highly disappointed.

The woman working there was super friendly and explained the sizes and flavors to us stating that she does a flavor of the month every month. This month was lemon and OMG it is so good! What stood out to me is that there weren't a ton of bags sitting around waiting to be bought and everything is definitely fresh. This was a nice little afternoon treat and I will be returning for some more of their delicious popcorn.

It's that good. I discovered BPP when I was in Maplewood shopping at Penzey's, my favorite spice store. As I parked on Manchester, I saw the colorful facade and the big letters POPCORN and knew I needed to visit after getting my spice fix. BPP is a tiny, cute popcorn boutique. It is simply and colorfully decorated. Janee' the proprietor is an amazing lady. She is not only the mastermind of BPP, she also provides excellent customer service. Her warm personality, makes shopping and selecting a flavor or two of popcorns a pleasant experience. I love popcorn. To be honest, I can make a big bowl of popcorn an evening meal. Being my first visit, I created my own mix. I enjoy Butter and Caramel. I started munching on it while driving back to IL and finally had to seal the bag up at a stop sign so I didn't devour it all before I got home. The butter popcorn was better then movie theatre popcorn and the caramel was rich and sweet. I'll be back, for sure. Every time I shop Penzey's, I'll shop Blissfully Popped Popcorn. My financial advisor is in Maplewood, so when I visit their office, I'll be a BPP, too. Oh, hell, anytime I am in Maplewood, I'll stop by BPP. Shop Local, Woman Owned and Black Owned.
