While this shop is super cute, and all of the treats are beautifully decorated, I have to say that the cupcakes were really,really dense. The frostings were nice and fluffy, but the "vanilla" has more of an almond taste than vanilla. I eat a lot of cupcakes, but I just failed to be impressed with these ones. read more

I love love cupcakes and j Rae's is OK. The look of cupcakes and cookies are gorgeous! The frosting is tasty and I love lots of frosting. The last few times I've been in the cupcakes are a bit dry and the icing is hard.....almost as if they had been out awhile. Their cookies are so big and have an almond taste to them. On my tour of cupcakes in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area I found J. Rae's OK. The iced sugar cookies were ok but I found them a bit hard. The pumpkin cupcake was good but I didn't really care for the cake balls. The coating was too thick and I found the cake packed too firmly. read more

I love trying new cupcakes all around DFW... Always vanilla (to get the best idea), and I love my first experience at J. Rae's! The buttercream is delicious, as is the cake. I don't ever see a problem with too much buttercream.... It is the best possible scenario. If you have cake leftover with no icing, then you are in a bind. Yummy! A beautiful shop, adorable treats, the excitement when I brought home two surprise cupcakes...then, pure disappointment. Carrot cake was decent, but the icing was very odd (tasted like almond flavoring). The strawberry cupcake...the one they recommended...I couldn't even eat it. Extremely disappointed! I love cookies and went based on reviews of their sugar cookies. The place has limited parking and you have to use stairs to get up to it; or if you can't climb stairs like me you have to park 50 yards away at the nearest ramp. I got there at 5pm and they only had 5 sugar cookies left, they were out of all other kinds. I bought one iced sugar cookie and it was $3.50! FOR A COOKIE! The cookie had little flavor, was pretty raw, and the icing was basically powdered sugar. Pillsbury place and bake sugar cookies with packaged icing is better than this cookie was. The staff was very friendly but the selection (or lack of) and taste of their cookies will prevent me from ever going back. read more

Unbelievable cupcakes. Not too sweet, fluffy, lots of yummy frosting. Such a treat. I don't usually care for sweets, but these cupcakes made my day. Disappointed. Was so excited to find a new cupcake place.Paid $28.00 for 6 cupcakes and 4 cookies (way to expensive). The cupcakes were not moist at all and the icing was way to sweet. It is a sad for this establishment when I can honestly say Hostess prepackaged cupcakes and grocery store cupcakes are better. This is not just a single persons opinion there were 7 people in our party and no one could stand a single cupcake. After reading a news article on J. Rae's cupcakes I was excited to take them to a dinner party. I purchased an assortment of White, Chocolate, German Chocolate, Red Velvet, Strawberry, Pumpkin, Lemon and Coconut. Only one individual at our party could choke down an entire cupcake. They were the worst cupcakes I have ever tried to eat. Every flavor I would describe as biscuit texture, dry and tasteless. The coconut flavor is actually white cake with coconut shavings on the top of a mound of pasty icing, not coconut-flavored cupcake. My order was not prepared correctly and the pumpkin spice had the wrong icing on it. I had 11 cupcakes left and returned them to the bakery to be met with a rude sales girl and was told that she could not give me a refund that would have to come from the manager on Monday. She also did not want to give us her name. I say it speaks volumes that I would drive nearly an hour to return them to the store in an effort to prove they were not touched. I also wanted them to sample their own product which, they did not do. They refused to give a refund on the cupcakes we returned except for the pumpkin spice.They would only refund $4.00 because they had the wrong icing on them. They do not refund because for food that is inedible or because people do no like their food. Interesting that a company can produce something and not stand behind their product. No one at our event will purchase from this bakery. I strongly urge anyone considering them to find another option, if you want a good cupcake. read more

My first visit wasn't the best, I bought a variety of cupcakes to bring home to my family. The frosting was "OK" but the cake was extremely dry...tasted quite old. I thought maybe they had a bad batch or bad day. I didn't go back for well over a year. This time I visited with a group of friends. I thought I'll go ahead and give them another shot. I got a couple of their TCU sugar cookies and half dozen cupcakes. Guess what?!?! I think they were serving last years cupcakes. That did it for me...I won't be back. read more

Unfortunately, J. Rae's isn't my favorite place for cupcakes. There is a limited selection of flavors, and not creative flavors at that, the cupcakes were only ok in taste, and they were a bit dry. I agree with some of the other reviewers...J. Rae's need to back off on the amount of frosting, way too much and way too sweet! As for service, it wasn't very good either. I stood there for 5 minutes before anyone said hello or offered to help me...they were busy chit chatting amongst themselves...not a way to win over customers. I saw this little shop while out the day before my birthday and 100% of me wishes I had turned a blind eye to the store after the actual visit. Lets start from the beginning....store signage and cupcake boxes were cute but the store decor and curb appeal looked cheap and rushed. When we (my mom and I) walked in we were greeted immediately and were advised of the products, pricing, and local favorites. Now, we went in for cupcakes, but we were offered samples of sugar cookies and after tasting them, that was a warning that we should have left then. The cookies tasted raw in the middle and the frosting was overwhelmingly sweet. I asked about the flavor of the icing as it was very strong and I was told it had some form of almond flavoring which was very overpowering. In theory, we should have left while we were ahead, instead we purchased 2 cupcakes - one Oreo and the other Coconut. When we made it home, we discovered there was obviously a pumice stone disguised as a cupcake. The cake was extremely dry and very dense to the touch. The ratio of icing to cupcake was WAY off and the icing was BEYOND sweet... even the Cavity Creeps wouldn't have been able to deal with the amount of sugar in the icing. It was also very grainy, which after reading another review could best be explained as the edible glitter they use to make them sparkly. After such a bad pre birthday purchase, I decided to read other reviews to make sure I wasn't being too hard on them, and it's quite obvious that the company doesn't take heed to the reviews they read as there are some from at least 5 years ago that have the same complaints... cupcakes are too dry and icing too sweet. Cupcakes are meant to be moist and have the right amount of sugar... they are meant to bring a sparkle to our eyes and happy butterflies to our tummies. I wish there had been a warning sign denoting the fact that the cupcakes were health hazards, not deserts. Future buyers, beware, you have been warned. :( On a related note, the only reason I gave one star was for the service. read more

I visited the J Raes's in Wichita,ks. The building is colorful very pretty. But their product is disgusting. The sugar cookies are too thick didn't like the taste of artificial. The cupcakes were awful I tried the red velvet it was dry and had 1/2 lb icing on it, my daughter had the vanilla cupcake again not good. The staff was very friendly. In the tough economic times we're going through I find it hard to pay good money for their product. I don't mind spending the money if the best ingredients are used in a product clearly they were not. I dont think they'll have a problem selling because people in Kansas eat anything and think its great. Anyone with a little time at home could produce a far superior product. I was a journeyman baker for many years in a all scratch store this tasted nothing like scratch to me. Just a bunch of artificial flavors and after tastes. read more

We discovered J. Rae's because of a trip to La Familia. We walked by and it was so charming we couldn't help but go in. We went in to look and were lured to buy by the lovely little cupcakes and delightful smell. They are decorated simply, but are very appealing with their sparkles and icing puff on top of the cupcake. My daughter got vanilla and I got chocolate. They must have been made very recently because they were soft, moist, and incredibly fresh. It was literally the best cupcake I have ever had. I loved the super fluffy icing. Many cupcake icings from stores and bakeries are very heavy and thick. This icing was as light as a cloud. It was also the perfect sweetness. Most icings I have had are cloying. Not this. I didn't have to scrape any off. It looked like there was way too much icing, but it was so light and had the perfect sweetness that I didn't have to scrape any off like I do with other cakes and cupcakes. It was also just the right richness. It had a light chocolate flavor. The cake itself was moist and tender without being heavy. Again, not too rich. I took a bite of my daughter's vanilla, and it was as divine as mine. We live in Dallas, but I am sure I will head back just for a box of these lovely cakes. read more

Great cupcakes but the service SUCKS! My family and I have been in there several times and the girls working have been nothing but rude to us. Maybe they are just rude to Hispanic people seeing as how the majority of their customers are Caucasian. Third time I've visited this place and every single time the middle of my sugar cookie is completely raw, the smell and taste is raw, I mean RAW!!! Super cute designs and super cute Bakery but why are all of the cookies completely raw? even the texture is like it has not been baked all the way! I know everyone wants that amazing melts in your mouth soft sugar cookie, but they're doing it completely wrong and I'm concerned about the health of the public. And here's another thing I would really like to add....... I used to work as a health inspector, and the only thing that would allow for the cupcakes to sit out on a counter all day and not in a cooler or a refrigerator is because the icing came out of a bucket and is not fresh or homemade. That stuff has a six month shelf life. If they use real butter cream it would have to be refrigerated. So I just want you to know what kind of product you were getting. That particular icing even has a particular smell it's very distinctive. I'm not saying it's bad it's just not the fresh kind of icing that you can get at several other bakeries instead. I tried this place a while back and had forgotten just how amazing it was, for their shortbread iced cookies. I went to Ft. Worth this past weekend for a friend's birthday get together and she treated us with shortbread iced cookies from this little bakery. I instantly remembered these being a winner the first time around and they stole my taste buds the second time around. The cookie was thick, buttery, rich and melt-in-your-mouth fabulous. I wish we had this bakery near me, in northwest Carrollton. I highly recommend this bakery for an outstanding iced shortbread cookie. They also sell other cookies of the drop dough variety; snickerdoodle, chocolate chip etc. which all looked amazing as well. They had a few cupcakes in the display as well as truffles and cheesecake--all of which I plan to try eventually. I'll need to make more trips to downtown Ft. Worth more often. I saw the ad in the newspaper and wanted to give them a try. I was not happy. The whole top of the cupcake came off in one swipe. It was hard and too much sugar. I was disappointed about the taste. You pride your self on freshness. My cupcake was hard and stale. Threw it away after first bite.
