For families, the Glenville YMCA is great. For adults... it depends. During the school year, I enjoy going to the Y at various times of day to workout, participate in classes, and swim. During those times, it's great. The summer is a whole other story.
The "day" camp that takes place there goes from 7-7. It's not just that there are children there. It's that the children are NOT supervised well at all. They run all over the Y-- from the pool, to the workout area, to the outside area and back with maybe one high school kid acting as "counselor" for every 15 or 20 kids.
Then there's water EVERYWHERE-- in the hallways, the gym area, etc. There are arguments in the bathroom areas, and screaming all over the place. You can't get a machine in the workout area because kids are allowed to play in there. They jump on a treadmill for 5 minutes, then run over to a bike for another 5, all while the "counselors" chat and laugh and ignore the kids.
I suppose it's fun for the kids, but so poorly run and there is NO space for adults who just want to get a workout in... and there is NO space for families coming to swim with their kids. Good luck getting a lane or any space in the pool with dozens of kids screaming, running around the pool area, and jumping in on top of each other.
As for the workout area, I have no idea why you would allow an 8 year old on delicate equipment or allow them to bang around the workout area, but it's obnoxious and unnecessary. I would Never allow my children to come here. They are asking for injuries and lawsuits.
If they could keep the children outdoors, upstairs, or even in the gym (and pool in limited numbers with more oversight) it would be fine. But the plain fact is that they accept way many more children than they can handle, and for that reason, this place gets 5 stars in the fall, winter, and spring, and 0 stars in the summer. read more
