    History of Distillery

Interesting experience. I have been through MANY distilleries and this is the ONLY one that prohibits any photography. VERY ODD. They explained that it is because the Carbon Dioxide produced from the distilling process would explode from a spark caused by the camera. CO2 is not flammable. Oh well, moving on. Caroline was our guide and seemed to know the stuff they taught her, yet gave odd answers to things she didn't seem to know; such as how thick is the copper in the still, how much peat do they use, what kind of barrels do they use. To me it felt like she was forcing herself to interact with us and really didn't care we were there. The tour was fairly fast as it is a small distillery. The sales floor is impressive and I am sure they sell a lot. I bought some because my supplier at home cant get it. The 3 wood varietal was good for the price. They don't bottle there and no idea where their rickhouse (or whatever they call it in Scotland) is. I am not actually convinced they actually make product here. Seems more like a showroom than a distillery. They charge on average $90 for a bottle of whiskey. They are owned by Lalique which makes "luxury" glass. At the beginning of the tour they said that empty bottles sell online for $60. That means the real value of their whiskey is only about $30 Would not recommend you visit here, especially if you have to pay for the tour.

This was our third distillery stop during our two-week adventure in Scotland, and we were excited to visit since our friends, who live just minutes away, had never been. We decided to check it out together and make a day of it! While the initial welcome was a bit lackluster--maybe it was the late afternoon and everyone was winding down--the setting was still enjoyable. My husband ordered a flight of their top three whiskies, and as a fan of the smoky flavors, he was definitely pleased. We were surprised to learn that the restaurant has two Michelin stars! We only had coffee, tea, pastries, and whiskey this time, but it's definitely a spot we'd consider for a full meal on a future visit. A lovely little outing with good company!

We were staying in Perth and asked the B&B owner what distilleries we could go to that were close and he recommended the Famous Grouse Experience at the Glenturret Distillery. It was a weekday and when we arrived late morning we ended up being the only people there. Our tour guide was still very gracious in giving us a private tour! He was in his early 20s and some of the scripted things he had to say he begrudgingly did which was hilarious. I think the fact that he acknowledged some of the cheesiness of the tour just made it better. Besides the informative private tour, the grounds were nice and well-kept and the location was scenic. It was also fun to take pictures with the very large bottle of the Famous Grouse, which apparently Glenturret won a Guinness World Record for producing the world's largest bottle of whiskey. I am not a huge whiskey person but being that I live in the United States our whiskey is much different than this type of malt whiskey produced here. Only about an hour from where I live is where Jack Daniels is made so I only have that perspective and have never heard about Scottish whiskey until my visit. We enjoyed our visit and it was worth the 40 minute detour from Perth to come visit. I'm not sure I'd recommend driving more than that to come here if it's out of your way of travels. Overall a good experience!

Great wee distillery and a really informative, entertaining tour. Particularly enjoyed the high level of focus given on the distillery cats: Glen and Turret (& their predecessor, super-mouser Towser). Standard tasting at the end, with some good tips on how to taste a whisky (& takeaway pots for the drivers!).

Crieff is a great town to visit in the low-highlands ( You would be amazed how many places claim to be the gateway to the highlands or boast some other geographic fact as being the inspired planning of whatever tourist planning committee last had a go at putting a sign up. That being said anyone with an interest in whisky, if you don't have I can't fathom why the hell you'd be in Scotland;), would likely want to visit the countries oldest distillery which distills one of the whiskys that goes into the blended Famous Grouse. There are several tours with one to suit those with a casual interest at 30 mins tour, more in depth presentations of an hour and 75 mins are their all with a corresponding price increase but you get more chances to sample to goods:) Our tour guide was clear, could answer questions and the information given wasn't dry. While they obviously talk up their own item it's not as invasive as some tours I've been on.E.G., you learn more about whisky rather than just their own brand. There's a restaurant on site as well as a shop with enough Famous Grouse memorabilia to exceed the tax free part of the Sadly the pathetic 1 litre per adult limit for alcohol at the airport rather cramps your style in AZ. In addition there's a kids play area and trails through the countryside nearby for those that may not want to take the tour.

Dumbed-down though not unpleasant visitors' experience at The Famous Grouse. If you always wanted to visit an authentic Scottish whisky distillery, do not make it the Glenturret Distillery, famous for its part of creating The Famous Grouse (a moderately inexpensive blended whisky that includes several single malts as well as grain whiskies). This is The Famous Grouse Experience, after all - except, truth be told, it is not much of an experience. Everything here caters to the casual whisky fan, not to anyone seriously interested in how whisky is, specifically, being made. If you're one of former, fine: Then this is perfectly adequate. But as a serious-minded whisky lover I was let down. I learned nothing here that I didn't know previously. Sure, if you have visited various breweries and/or distilleries, the process itself doesn't vary a lot between the individual makers. But still, there should be some distinguishing elements. Here, there were none. And you couldn't even take photos inside - allegedly because of the danger of an explosion. Yeah, right. With non-flash digital photography that's a risk I'd be willing to take. ;) Granted, the distillery is rather nice-looking from outside, and it's located in a really wonderful wooded area in Scotland. A shop and a restaurant contribute to the "visitors' experience". Is it worth visiting if you have to drive a hundred miles to get there? Absolutely not. Is it okay if you're just doing a day tour on a tourist coach and it's just one stop on the way? Absolutely.

I was taking a diabetic medicine that was causing some bathroom issues and she did an emergency stop for me and I am so grateful. I highly recommend tours to see Uk as driving on the other side of the road and a million turn about circles is terrifying so let the professionals take that stress from you. Plus they know where the cool stuff is and when to go. Our other tours in other countries the driver and guide were separate, so she gets bonus points for doing it all and to perfection. the roads are so narrow and scary but she did great. this was first time using this company but left willing to take other tours with Rabbies. She didn't say anything about tips which most do .. but bring tip money and reward exceptional service. We went on the trip with another couple and made some lovely memories. Loved going with friends even made it more special but in other trips we ended up making friends for life so either way is great. We did a stop near an ancient Village I think Vikings anyway there were some shops there where my friend bought a purse and I kicked myself for not going in there and getting one too. I thought the purse prices would be better in Edinburgh they were made with the local Fabric and real leather. When we got to Edinburgh the purses were not as well made and they were more expensive and a lot of them weren't even with real leather or made locally. The Edinburgh purse is a lot of them they use the fabric woven there but they made them out of the country probably China or India. Anyway I that is my biggest regret of the trip that I didn't buy an Islander purse. Now I'm going to have to see if I can buy one online and it'll be a lot more money. So if you go to the Isle of sky and you want a bag or a purse you might want to keep that in mind. My friend bought one that was more large than what I would have wanted but it was around a hundred and some dollars great price for the quality. It's well known that the UK is not known for its great weather. Lots of rain and can be very windy around the cliffs and water. I bought vessie shoes which are waterproof and comfortable but kind of expensive. I also took a raincoat with a hood and a hat with a brim and a chin strap because the wind around the cliffs is real. This hat is especially nice because it has a mesh netting that you can unclip in case you're getting in a buggy area which around the ferry pools we needed. If you don't need the netting you can just clip it back up and so it's really handy. The UK and pretty much most of Europe we find that they like twin beds in the hotels and especially the b&bs. I guess people don't like each other lol and want to sleep together. So we would call ahead and ask that they push the beds together before we get there if that was the case. They also don't seem to have air conditioning screens on the windows or sheets on the beds?? Sometimes places will have fans so it's worth asking or calling ahead to see if you can reserve a fan because they definitely don't have enough fans for every room. If you stay in a US-based hotel like a Hilton or Marriott Holiday Inn you don't have to deal with this as much but I guess it's just common in Europe. Traveling through the summer or heat wave months this can be a bit of a problem. The bed seemed all have these duvets which is great if it's cold out but when it's too warm it's a bit uncomfortable. Since we were roasting we had to open the window didn't love that there was no screen and a lot of the windows are made to where you can only open them about an inch so it doesn't provide much air. This was the case through all of the UK not just the Isle of Skye.

They had a single day (about 12 hours total) bus tour of Loch Ness and the Highlands, which was perfect for us. The bus left from Edinburgh, and left right on time. We traveled through a suburban town and eventually onto a main road that lead us up the eastern highlands. This area was mostly covered with green lands, hills, and sheep. Thousands of sheep. We made a stop in a small town where one could get a drink or snack at the local coffee shop, but unfortunately, being a Sunday, the rest of the town was closed. We continued on our tour, eventually stopping at Loch Ness. Loch Ness was amazing. We had the option of taking a 45 minute cruise on the Loch, which was cold, windy, and amazing. After the cruise, we had plenty of free time to check out the gift shop and have a bite to eat before having to be back on the bus. The tour then proceeded down through the Western Highlands. There, we saw some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. We stopped at an area called Glencoe, which was quite dreary but breathtaking. We had about 15 minutes on the side of the road just to observe and take pictures of the enormous green hills, rocks and waterfalls. Because our group was organized an on time returning to the bus after each stop, our tour guide treated us to a couple of extra stops. We stopped at a moving war memorial, a pretty large gift shop, and another rest stop that offered gift shops and places to eat. Our last stop was in Stirling, where we got out of the bus to observe the William Wallace monument. (Side note, the Wallace monument was the one thing I really wanted to see up close and didn't get to do on my trip. Next time, I'll make it!) The entire bus tour lasted about 12 hours, returning us to Edinburgh in time for a late dinner. It was a great way to see a large portion of Scotland's beautiful landscape in one day, and gave us ideas of where we'd like to re-visit and spend more time when we return. I would recommend this tour group, and would try another one of their one-day tours in the future.

Do yourself a favor, if you're going to see Scotland, book a private tour with Duncan McNab…read more Short review: Duncan is one heck of a tour guide. Unpretentious, knowledgeable, very personable, and a true Scotsman who wants to share his country with you. Long, romanticized review: There is nothing better than experiencing a country through the eyes of someone whose beloved home it is. Before saying it's obvious, understand this; any tour guide knows history, any can say "this is the most visited site in Edinburgh", most can even tell a tall tale or two to make you laugh but it takes a very special guide to create an experience. Experience? It goes without saying, the sites, monuments, abbeys, are stunning in their beauty. The countryside itself, romantic. Hollywood tale of Braveheart debunked. The Holy Grail at Roslyn Chapel; hmmm maybe. It's what's beyond that. It's about a telling of centuries old tale and believingly relating it one's own youth. About a drive along the modern piers, enroute to the Highlands showing off modern industrialization while taking subtle nationalistic punches at the unified UK that only a proud, long time, Scotsman can make. About lunching at a pub and listening to a father's hopes for the future of his children and how similar yet very different they are from our own. It breathes life into the country and makes it a living experience. Details: Send a booking request via the company website. Provide a list of dates and an idea of what you want to see. You do not need to be specific (I asked for castle and abbey ruins plus a distillery). Single or multiple day tours with lodging. Private vehicle (luxury sedan to small bus) based on party size. Rates vary. (Paid £350 / day). £150 due via PayPal at time of booking confirmation, the remainder due on the day of the tour.
