Small fries, not particularly small. $3.50 well spent.
Murray W.

The (in?)famous chip truck is the grandaddy of today's fancied up food trucks. Born out of a mix of convenience, necessity and good ol' entrepreneurship, these mobile grease machines are cut from two cloths. First, they can be shameful eateries that are no better than the likes of McDs - pumping out of large volumes of cheap, mediocre-at-best fried food to the lunch crowd masses. Preferably, they're like Glen's - doing simple things very well, and showing why these culinary dinosaurs are still around. I was meeting my wife in the Wellington Village area when I spotted Glen's brightly coloured truck down the road. Sure, we were going to be grabbing lunch elsewhere, but I was starving and we weren't going to eat for 45 minutes, so a pre-lunch snack was in order. The menu is what you would expect - fries, poutine, hotdogs and sausages, and a burger. I didn't want to be a complete glutton and wanted to sample their namesake fare, so I went with their small fries ($3.50). There was only one guy ahead of me on this cool November day, so my fries were ready in a hurry. Asked if I wanted salt or vinegar, I chose salt only. I was impressed that they took the care to layer the salt, filling the bag half full, salting, giving it a shake, and topping the bag off before giving it a final dose of NaCl. Pro seasoning game. The bag was sizable for a small, more than enough for one person unless you've been working hard or this is supposed to be a full meal. I appreciated how they structured it too, with a hard paper cup at the bottom for structural support, the bag to make it taller and hold more fries, and a fork so you could snag the fries at the bottom without getting greasy fingers and also still wear gloves in the cold weather.  Now the fries themselves - they were a bit on the thick side, coming in slightly thicker than your typical fry, and a perfect golden brown. They were lightly crispy on the outside and ultra fluffy inside, basically the perfect fry. A shade crispier would have been nice, but it's tough to do for fries of any thickness and not burn them. The salt was fairly generous, but that's right up my alley (sorry, blood pressure). The fries were crispy to the last one, but that wasn't very long.  Glen's is serving up some great fries, helping keep chip trucks alive and respectable.

Fries!

I came right before closing to try their fries and poutine, as I heard this chip truck was good. The owners are really friendly, and the food came fast. The fries tasted really fresh, and I found out they were made with sunflower oil! They were thick cut and slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Similarly, the poutine gravy was tasty, and there were ample curds, although they did not squeak. Overall: My top favourite is still Crispy Chips (super thick gravy and crazy squeaky curds), but Glen's is a second very solid choice!

So this place is in Kanata in front of the Canadian tire. The place gets lots of traffic and usually runs out of fries by late afternoon/ early evening. The place is cash only. Okay so if you're going to Glen's I'm assuming you're in the mood for some fries. If you're feeling really good about yourself you might be looking to add gravy and cheese to your fries. Well you're in the right place as far as Kanata goes. Due to my limited experience of the mysterious world of poutine, I can only offer a few words. Its a good quality poutine, crispy fries, tasty gravy and lots of soft cheese. I mean what else can you ask for? I guess if someone spoon fed it to me, it would be even better.

heaven.

Agh......so sad. I'm not in Ottawa any longer =( Stupid Texas and it's lack of poutine!!! Anyways, you know what's good?! Piping hot, crispy fries covered in gravy and melting cheese curds in the cold cold cold weather! We had to run into Canadian Tire and eat our large in one of the aisles. Huddled around our treasure. Great. Now I really want poutine. Well, if you're fortunate enough to be in that area, stop by for me! A medium poutine is more than enough for 2 people! Other patrons were ordering fries and dousing it with vinegar...which I must admit is still pretty foreign to a Texan... but they people looked satisfied eating it, so it must be good =) Oh, the only thing was that they don't automatically layer your poutine. Apparently you can ask them to though!

I love Filipino food, but for some reason there is a dearth of Filipino restaurants in Ottawa…read more I've had Meryenda on my radar ever since I had their Halo-Halo at the Asian Night Market at Lansdowne Park 3 years ago, but I'm rarely out by their location and I'm not the hugest fan of eating outside (UV radiation, pollution, bugs, yuck! Yeah, I'm a princess, lol.). Anyway, I finally decided to make a special trip out there and the food was fantastic! I got the Chicken Inasal ($11.25, plus taxes), I asked for no sesame seeds, and that wasn't a problem at all. The chicken was lean, which I really liked, and it was very flavourful. It came with garlic rice and a jicama slaw. The slaw was really creamy, maybe a tad too rich for my liking, but otherwise very good. You could taste the garlic in the garlic rice, but it wasn't overpowering, which is good because no one wants to walk around smelling like a garlic bulb. This dish was delicious, but my only complaint is that I found the portion size a bit small. I was still hungry afterwards and ended up getting a meat pie at Nasser Bakery across the street, and also a cannoli at Farmer's Pick, lol. I dunno, maybe I just have an unusually large appetite, haha. Service was friendly and relatively quick. They are in the parking lot of the plaza at the south west corner of Prince of Wales and Meadowlands. The same plaza as the Shoppers Drug Mart, McDonalds and Baskin Robbins. They are right in front of that garage called Oil Changers. There are 3 picnic tables with umbrellas where you can sit and eat. Free parking in the plaza parking lot. I would love to try other items on their menu and of course have some Halo-Halo again :)

When I saw The Bulldog Cafe on Google Maps, I knew I had to go there! They are a food truck and their specialty is waffles shaped like bulldog faces. How cute is that?!? My first visit was just with my mom to check it out. Waffles are $5.99 each, but if you buy 4 it's $22.99. We got 4. I wanted the pepperoni pizza waffle, but they were out of pepperoni, so I got a cheese pizza waffle and an apple cinnamon waffle. My mom decided to get the same, lol. The lady working there, I suspect is the owner, and she was lovely. She brought out a box filled with activities to entertain us while we waited, lol. There was a dog-themed card game, some crayons, colouring books and more, lol. We just walked around, but these activities would be great for kids! They have a colourful picnic table and a smaller kids' picnic table next to the food truck. They also have some bulldog shaped planters around the food truck. The decor is adorable! The waffles themselves were good. We really enjoyed the apple cinnamon ones. They had plenty of apple chunks as the filling and was topped with cinnamon sugar. The cheese pizza one was good, but too light on the cheese. The waffles had a nice texture, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. She gave us a loyalty card where you buy 8 you get the 9th one free. We were halfway to getting a free one :) I knew my little nieces would love this place, so on my second visit, I brought them with my mom and I. They both love Nutella, so they wanted the Nutella waffle and got one each. My younger niece only wanted one waffle, but my older niece wanted 2, so she also got an apple cinnamon one. We were going to get the cheesecake waffle for my mom and I but they ran out, so we got a Tiramisu waffle instead. And with the purchase of those 4, we filled up our loyalty card, so for my free one, I got the pepperoni pizza waffle that I wasn't able to get on my first visit. The girls loved their Nutella waffles. They were filled with so much Nutella. The Tiramisu waffle had a strong Tiramisu flavour and we enjoyed it. I was hoping the pepperoni pizza waffle would have more cheese this time, but again it had very little cheese :( It was mostly just pepperoni and tomato sauce. I should have tried another flavour, lol. My nieces loved the activity box and they enjoyed our little outing. I would definitely recommend this place for kids. The food truck is in the parking lot where Apple Saddlery is. There are 2 other food trucks in the same parking lot. Lots of free parking.

Full disclosure: I have never bought anything here, I have just eaten my friend's fries, lol. Well, I'll admit it, the fries are good. They are greasy chip wagon fries. Chip wagon fries remind me of my childhood. When I was a kid, my parents and I would go to visit family friends almost every weekend. They had a daughter a few years older than me, and while my parents didn't let me venture out on my own, they entrusted me with their friends' daughter, and she would take me to this chip wagon in front of Nathan Phillips Square (in Toronto) and we would get fries. It was good times. And you know what? Eating fries at TV's Fries with my friend, also good times, lol. Fries + Friends = Good Times :) The fries are crispy on the outside, but soft and creamy on the inside. They are never mealy. They are, however, really really greasy. Ok for an occasional treat, but not frequently. Service is friendly. They only take cash. They are closed on Wednesdays. They are permanently at the Rona parking lot at West Hunt Club and Merivale (close to the Dollarama). Note that there is another chip wagon nearby in the Canadian Tire parking lot called Crispy Chips. They are different chip wagons, and likely rivals/competitors. I have never been to Crispy Chips because my friend always wants to go to TV's Fries, lol.

Our…read morelocal Yelp person has thrown down the challenge to try as many of these new food trucks as possible in the next couple of months. So, to that end I thought I would try the one closest to home. Food: While I only tried two dishes here on my first visit, I would say the food is vietnamese-ish due to their ingredients and flavor. I had their lunch combo which allows you one appetizer, one main and a drink for $11 (basically this saves you $1 from getting them separately). My appetizer choice was an egg waffle (see photo) and my main was their Banh Xeo (see photo). The waffle was nice. In terms of taste, think a waffle made out of a fortune cookie batter. The Banh Xeo was nice and tasty as well with the beansprouts and chicken/pork/shrimp filling (that's their 'special' which is $1.50 more). My only issue with the food was that after eating the waffle and my main I was still hungry. Maybe I just had a hungry appetite today but I'll try something different next time to see if I still feel the same. Regretfully, there is a Dairy Queen down Richmond not to far away so, hanging my head in shame, I had a medium blizzard to fill the gap. Location: The 'Chow Down' food truck sits pretty much on the corner of Woodroffe and Byron Avenue. Byron is the street that is just next (south) of Richmond Road. You can park on the side of Byron if you are driving (which most of you will likely be doing since I can't see this area getting much foot traffic). Seating: Today was a sunny day and they had two small tables for seating. Not a lot but at least it is something. Since it is a low traffic area and most people are likely driving, I guess they don't need more. Hours: I'm not sure, but I think they are only open during weekdays and on lunch hours. I don't remember seeing their truck there on the weekend. Other: There's a Shouldice stand right next to the food truck so depending on when you are there, you may be able to grab some strawberries (earlier in the season) or corn (which they had today). Final thoughts: We'll, I liked it enough that I'll go back. Since I try to give my ratings in relation to similar types of establishments (and this is the first food truck I've tried), I'm starting at three stars. Let the food truck challenge continue....

TLDR: Food truck selling Filipino -inspired crepes and drinks. Their pulled chicken crepe was so…read moredelicious and their Gulaman Cooler was refreshing on a hot day. This food truck recently set up shop in my neighbourhood (summer of 2024). I first saw it while driving to work and made a mental note to check it out. They don't have their own website and are exclusively on Instagram and Facebook. Initially they weren't even on Google Maps, but now they are. But really, they had me at crepes and Filipino-inspired sealed the deal, lol. I love creative fusion cuisine! The Husbster and I walked over on a Sunday afternoon and the owner (I think she was the owner) was all smiles and very welcoming. I got the Walker Crepe ($16) which was pulled chicken, rutabaga, pickles and a spinach/arugula mix. It usually comes with cilantro, but my husband hates cilantro, so I asked to have it omitted, so he could try some (even though he wasn't in the mood for crepes and we knew I would be the one eating most of it, lol). I also got the Gulaman Cooler ($4.50) which is a drink made of brown sugar syrup and banana extract with jellies. I love jellies, so I asked for extra and got lots of jellies ;) I was also pleasantly surprised that the crepe came with a small quinoa salad. The crepe was delicious. The pulled chicken was dark meat and so moist, tender and flavourful. The shredded rutabaga added a nice texture, as did the pickles and leafy greens. It was a little wet towards the bottom though with liquid pooling and it eventually leaked out the bottom of the paper cone holding the crepe. Luckily I was given lots of napkins, lol. The crepe was crispy around the edges and soft with a nice amount of chew on the inside. A very tasty crepe. The quinoa salad was ok, but nothing too remarkable. It had a lot of cilantro in it, to my husband's chagrin, haha. I loved the Gulaman Cooler, especially with all the jelly I was given ;) It was sweet and refreshing on a hot summer's day. The jellies were cut very small, so they fit in the narrow straw. I had a lovely chat with the lady who I believe is the owner while she prepared my items. She was very friendly. There are picnic tables in front of the food truck for you to eat at. And since the food truck is parked in an empty parking lot, there is parking available if you drive there. Looking forward to trying their other items, like maybe their sweet crepes :) (100)
