My life is not the…read moresame as I'm dealing with constant pain, and yet my doctor can't seem to find the time to see me. The PA is not supposed to be my primary care physician--Dr. Halim is. She is not personally familiar with my medical history or my previous conversations with him. Dr. Halim initially diagnosed my back issues as a muscle tear. He ordered an X-ray, but when I came in to review the results, I was assigned to his PA, whose diagnosis was different. They ordered a CT scan, and when I returned to review that, I was yet again assigned to the PA. Then they ordered an MRI. I had the MRI done on a Friday. After another weekend of dealing with the pain, I called Monday to make an appointment to review the MRI. I thought I was being completely reasonable in requesting to see my actual doctor this time. I hadn't been able to talk to or see him since the X-ray or CT scan, and I wanted to discuss the results of all three tests with him. This is a big deal--not only the three large kidney stones, but also the other unrelated pain I've been experiencing. It has been horrible. When I called, I specifically told the receptionist that I needed to see Dr. Halim rather than his PA. I was told, "I can't guarantee that you will see him." I explained that I was in a lot of pain and had been jumping through all these hoops and taking all these tests without ever being able to see my doctor. The receptionist put me on hold for several minutes, apparently to speak with Dr. Halim. She came back and told me, "Yes, Dr. Halim will see you Friday at 10 AM." I made the appointment and double-confirmed before ending the call: "So, you're telling me that if I come in Friday at 10, I will for certain be able to see my doctor this time?" She said yes. I showed up Friday morning. The front desk confirmed that I had a 10 o'clock appointment with Dr. Halim. The other staff member brought me back, checked my blood pressure and told me, "Doctor Halim will be right in." He never came in. I never got to review my X-ray, CT scan or MRI with him. Having Dr. Halim as my physician, I would have thought it was a good thing to have a doctor with decades of experience. He had sold me on how knowledgeable he was about back issues, especially since he has had three back surgeries himself. But what good does all that experience and knowledge do for me when I can never get to see or speak with him? I had waited four days for that Friday 10 AM appointment after my MRI results came back. This appointment was extremely inconvenient because I'm also my mom's caregiver. She can't drive, and she had her own specialist appointment that Friday morning that she had been waiting a month for. I couldn't take her because I needed to see Dr. Halim during the only appointment he had available for me that week. My sister had to take time off work to take my mom to her specialist so I could make it to Dr. Halim's appointment. I rearranged all of that because I was specifically promised I would finally get to see my doctor. Instead, I showed up and was blown off yet again. I can't imagine what else it could be other than Dr. Halim simply being stretched too thin and too busy with too many patients. It can't be something personal. I've been a good patient and have always been on time and friendly with him and his staff. They laugh at my silly jokes, and I've even brought bags of candy for the doctor and staff to show my appreciation. Everything had been great--right up until I was promised four times (twice on the phone and twice in person) that I would see my doctor, and it didn't happen. This isn't just about my schedule. I'm dealing with daily pain, and my family had to rearrange their schedules so I could make that specific Friday 10 AM appointment. After waiting a week for the MRI, I was desperate to get the results and discuss the X-ray, CT scan and MRI with Dr. Halim. It would have been worth my sister taking time off work to take my mom to her appointment if it finally meant I could see my doctor and review everything. Instead, I felt like a real sucker for rearranging everything after being promised I could see my doctor that day. It was never like this before. Dr. Halim must be too busy, with a backlog of patients and a poorly organized schedule, to see me after three consecutive appointments. But if he wasn't going to be available, I think the common courtesy would have been to call me and reschedule. I was PROMISED that if I rearranged my schedule for a third appointment, four days out, I would get to see my doctor. I was given one timeslot the entire week--Friday at 10 AM--to finally get to see my doctor. And even after PROMISED I would finally get to see my doctor, nope, no explanation, no apology, no doctor,

Dr. Moazzas literally rebuilt my spine! I have what I call an erector set keeping my spine straight. I am also 2 inches taller. I won't kid you, this was a serious surgery. In fact, there were three in a row. I trusted Dr. Moazzaz based on how professional he and his staff are and the fact that the doctor is a very exacting in all he does and expects his staff, the hospital staff, the home health care staff and the physical therapy staff to follow his instructions for getting the best post operative results. Dr. Moazzaz has a calming and friendly presence while keeping a very professional demeanor regarding the patient's issues. He and his staff carefully explained what I was getting into. I won't kid you, this surgery is very big. the first two weeks post surgery were the hardest, but the doctor and staff made sure I had the appropriate medication to help me make it. I am eight weeks out from that surgery. I have been walking four miles a day since week four, and have just started physical therapy. The pain I felt before surgery is gone. All my clothes fit me and I'm extremely happy with the results. A full recovery will take time, but I'm a very determined person who stays active. The most important advice I can give is to keep moving after the surgery. If you are sedentary, it's not the doctor's fault that you aren't getting better.

He performed neck surgery on me, but after the operation, not only did the pain not improve, it got worse, and I developed new symptoms such as tingling in my tongue and hands. When I went back to him, he said the real problem was with a vertebra between my shoulder blades, which was clearly visible on both my X-ray and MRI from the very beginning -- and he had seen those images. Because of his misdiagnosis, I spent around $7,000 out of pocket (in addition to insurance) and was out of work for three months. At my last visit, he admitted the issue was with the vertebra between my shoulder blades but told me it's better not to have another surgery. Now, on top of my original pain, I also have neck pain and tingling in my hands and tongue. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience.

My 74-year-old mother recently moved from Canada to San Diego, and we have been rebuilding her medical care here from scratch. English is not her first language, and I routinely accompany her to appointments to make sure she understands her medical care and can communicate her concerns properly. We have seen Dr. Clancy multiple times, so this review is not based on one unpleasant encounter. Unfortunately, we have repeatedly experienced the same dismissive and unwelcoming behavior. Our appointments have felt extremely rushed, often lasting only approximately 5-10 minutes. When we ask questions, we have experienced sighing, visible frustration, eye-rolling, and responses that made both my mother and me feel as though we were an inconvenience rather than patients seeking medical care. Today's appointment crossed a line for me. My mother was trying her best to explain an issue concerning her daily blood-pressure medication. During the conversation, Dr. Clancy rolled his eyes, removed his glasses, looked directly at me and, referring to my mother's English, said words to the effect of: "When she speaks English, it makes me frustrated and I don't understand." I found this extraordinarily disrespectful and humiliating. A 74-year-old woman struggling to communicate in her second language should never be made to feel embarrassed for trying to explain a medical concern to her physician. There are professional and compassionate ways to handle a language barrier. Showing visible irritation toward an elderly patient is not one of them. What makes this more concerning is that today's experience was not isolated. We have left previous appointments feeling rushed, uncomfortable and unwelcome as well. Today simply reached the point where I could no longer remain silent. We will be finding my mother another primary-care physician. I also intend to formally report our experience through the appropriate channels because I believe elderly patients, immigrants, and people with limited English proficiency should be able to seek medical care without being made to feel ashamed or burdensome. I strongly encourage families, especially those caring for an elderly parent who may need additional patience or help communicating to consider our experience when deciding whether this practice is the right fit for them. Respect and compassion should be the absolute minimum a patient receives in a doctor's office.

But, what was most impressive, was that he first asked my husband what was going on with his neck, what he had already done to address the problem, and how he felt about the surgery. Then he explained what the MRI showed (more thoroughly than the 1st neurosurgeon did), and then gave his recommendation. Since my husband's neck didn't bother him, and he had other medical issues he is dealing with, we were all in 100% agreement to call off the surgery and just monitor things every couple of months.
