We stayed in the garden rooms which are a newer addition to the hotel. They had great views. The rooms were clean and they provided goodies in the coffee/tea/refrigerator area. We all really enjoyed our time in Fort Augustus and look forward to visiting The Lovat and Station Road restaurant again.

I have had way worster experiences and I feel like these reviews are more for the hotel itself rather than just the restaurant itself so I do want to be somewhat fair. With all that being said... I can't confidently recommend the restaurant here. The Caesar salad was literally the only thing that was somewhat edible. I had been in Scotland for almost a week at this point and it was also the first time that I had ever been charged for water. That was something I kinda wished they would have mentioned to us if they were going to do that. That's not cool man. It really comes off as shady. For food I ordered the Seafood Risotto and there was practically no flavor. When I asked my friends how they felt about their dishes, it was unanimous around the table. Maybe the chef just quit the night before and they were trying to make do with what they have and know? It's just weird right? You see the pictures and see how cool The Inch looks inside and out and just figure if they have a restaurant that it's going to have at least "some" form of quality to the food. But there was none to be found unfortunately and you are left just feeling like this place is a tourist trap. So yea can't recommend the food here. Then again it is a small area. When we checked in the lovely girl came outside to greet us. It was the sweetest hotel check in ever!! Our room was lovely. There's a huge living room with a fireplace that they lit downstairs. That was my favorite place to hang out. There was also chairs outside overlooking the lake and it was so quiet and peaceful at night. And there's a little hike behind the hotels to the waterfall. It was absolutely beautiful and peaceful. The food in the restaurant was superior. They rent out the whole place for weddings and I'm trying to talk my best friend into getting married there it was so great.

My husband and I ended up here on our honeymoon by accident - Expedia effed up our hotel reservations and we were upgraded to a room here instead of our room at another hotel. Brilliant! Fort Augustus is one of the cutest towns I've ever seen, and again, I had a fantastic meal that I still dream about. If driving down Loch Ness, make a stop, stay a night or just grab a bowl of Scotch broth before hitting the road!

We also went for a swim off the pier and walked to the field / beach just to the East, which afforded great views of the Great Glen (Loch Ness, hills) and was the tent location of the Lochdown episode of The Grand Tour. A couple has owned and operated The Lovat for many years now, and also runs the restaurant (chef & manager). We stayed in "The Apartment", which is spacious. We were greeted on our arrival with complimentary bag service and iced toddies, in a lovely sitting room. The Apartment was nice, with modern and clean bathroom. As with most hotels in the UK, there's no air conditioning, but The Apartment had several windows. The furnishings seemed a little dated, and the refrigerator (the only room with one) reeked of fish and needed cleaning, but the rooms were fine. The Apartment had a clothes washer (again possibly the only one with it), with a note not to use it in the evening hours. For stays in the other rooms, if laundry service is needed, there's a mini launderette at the gas station down the hill. Scenery from the huge bay windows was very nice; see attached. For dinner we had the 3-course Mion menu, which was very unique with local ingredients in amazing presentations. It really showcased a fine-dining Scottish experience and was tasty. Service was generally good, with the exception of one entry-level hostess who was nice enough, but had significant behavioral problems and should be let go. We got the impression that the owner / manager knew the server needed to be fired, but was lacking backup seasonal staff, as the owner herself was the main server. The breakfast had very impressive options; a huge buffet with kitchen service options also, and good service. Unfortunately my wife became ill overnight. I was granted a late checkout for a fee. Overall, The Lovat is a lovely historic hotel in an amazing location, with good food. There seemed to be several minor issues linked to staffing and management issues, such as the dated furnishings, dirty fridge, and one problematic employee. It cannot be easy or profitable running a hotel these days. We enjoyed our stay and very much enjoyed Fort Augustus; our only stop in Invernesshire.

The scenery around the castle is absolutely breathtaking (especially if you are from North Texas) and watching the deer walk across the glen during the early morning mist with the mountains in the background was sublime. The autumn colors definitely helped, so we highly recommend going during the fall. We loved both the dinner (though we felt overdressed compared to the other guests since I wore a full suit rather than a suit jacket), but the breakfast was the best part.

So having taken a family of four to both Ill give you some tips. They are both lovely ways to stay but if you want your kids close and safe while still having a door between you for alone time with your partner stay in the inn. If you plan to make your own meals to save money stay in the bunkhouse. But even if you choose the bunkhouse it's worth paying for a breakfast in the Inn.

I was in a five-person room with my friends. The room was clean and smelled nice. The staff was friendly. The walls weren't paper-thin, so I wasn't hearing every noise my neighbors made. I wasn't scared for my life when I went in the showers (quite the opposite). Guys, this is not normal of some of the hostels I've been in at this price. It was in a good spot in Ft. Augustus, although there's not a whole lot to do in that town (that closes at 5 pm :) ). I was with a tour, so we just stayed there at night and I got driven around in the morning, fun times. The place serves free hot chocolate, tea, and coffee (!!), and has a great little kitchen with a bunch of dining supplied. They also make an attempt to be environment-friendly. I can't remember if they have a place to store your luggage, but since their doors locked and all the people in the room were friends of mine I didn't mind either way. The only thing was its location was a little out of the way, and unmarked from the main road (no signs leading to it). So I had to wander around alone in the rain. Loved it. It is the hostel to which all others are failing to compare. Edit: Forgot to mention the bar on-site, with a roaring fireplace. And the free internet (there's also free WiFi but I didn't bring my laptop).

The scallops were so sweet and cooked to perfect perfection. It came with butternut squash puree (wished there was more) and crispy lardon, cubed butternut squash and capers salad - wished there were more betterment cubes and less capers as the later made it too salty). Wished I could gave them 4.5 starts! This is the quintessential Skye experience we aimed for! A small local restaurant with locally sourced seafood!
