We were in Scotland on our Honeymoon and at this point of our trip had spent two weeks and 800 miles driving all over this beautiful country. We had marveled at how bizarre it was that with all this time and all this driving we had yet to encounter a single rude person in all of Scotland. Until the Dornie Hotel. Walking into the bar you would've thought we had flounced into someone's home uninvited. Not a single bartender acknowledged our presence. An entire sports team sprawled across one whole end of the bar and nobody so much as moved a toe to allow us the space to move through them and to grab a seat. The bar staff didn't ask us what we'd like to drink or make any suggestions as to what was on tap. When I asked for vodka and cranberry juice I was told "We don't have that, the soft drinks are there" as she pointed towards the cooler below the bar. Last time I checked cranberry was a juice and not a carbonated soda, but whatever. I then asked for vodka and orange juice and received an eye roll. My husband requested a sample of a local beer and that was haphazardly slid into his direction. We decided to try some food instead and asked if we could grab a table. She grunted and tossed her head over her shoulder in the direction of the dining room. We pushed our way through the rude crowd and into the hotel where we waited for approximately 10 minutes before being spoken to by the waiter. After ordering a cheese plate we were given three really wonderful cheeses that unfortunately were being served with some real crap sides : a piece of celery that had been cut into slivers so thin you could've used them as a toothpick, and the same with the one slice of apple that had been sliced into paper thin sheets. It was such a shame to stumble upon such an adorable town that seemed to be filled with people loathe to deal with two well-mannered tourists. Definitely not a place I would ever recommend.

On the first night, we enjoyed a 5 course dinner in the main dining room, which provided a romantic atmosphere, with candlelit tables and charming decor. The chef's table on the second evening (booked in advance) was more minimalistic, but this wasn't an issue for us, as the true magic was right in front of us! Getting to watch the masters at work and plating such perfect dishes to such a high standard, helped to create an extra special and immersive experience. Included in part of our package was a delicious, award-winning breakfast on both mornings, a Prosecco afternoon tea, and cookery class with Michelin starred chef, Marcello Tully. During the cookery class, we learned how to make Kinloch Lodge's famous homemade scones and after having already tasted them as part of our afternoon tea, we were super excited to learn how to make them for ourselves and get to take the recipe home! Shown a mini tour of the lodge and brought to "the big room". The dining room with about 8 tables. Neatly decorated with gold framed paintings of the lineage of the hotel. We were gifted some complementary fizz for our anniversary which was so special. Spectacular service, my husband was interested in some whisky and the hostess/whisky expert/amazing woman came to ask what he likes and recommend something. He loved what he got, a local whisky made down the road. We had the special of the day: Pie and Pud. Mine was cheese and leek and his was venison. Delicious! The first dish we've had in Scotland where even the vegetables were seasoned. Perfect pastry and such savory flavors. We were almost too full for the pud! Almost. Toffee pudding and chocolate brownie were intensely sweet and yummy. After dessert, we were welcome to have tea in the parlor, but of course! Great views of the loch while having fresh loose leaf tea, homemade shortbread, and a crackling fireplace. Because the weather was a bit inclement, we appreciated their bar and lounge area. We are both avid hikers, and the staff very helpfully gave us directions/information about spots to visit. Their chef is fantastic, we had a superb meal in their dining room. They also introduced me to my new favorite breakfast, porridge with a shot of Scotch. Our next stop after the Isle of Skye was Iona, and when it came time to leave the ferry stop was a short drive down the road. The drive, and necessary ferry rides, by the way, were fantastic.

The scenery around the castle is absolutely breathtaking (especially if you are from North Texas) and watching the deer walk across the glen during the early morning mist with the mountains in the background was sublime. The autumn colors definitely helped, so we highly recommend going during the fall. We loved both the dinner (though we felt overdressed compared to the other guests since I wore a full suit rather than a suit jacket), but the breakfast was the best part.

We got a few 'local insights' to quite beaches we wouldn't have found without these suggestions. The food was incredible, making it hard to eat anywhere else at night. There are two options Seamus' Bar and the main restaurant in the hotel. Both are delicious with great vibes and well stocked bars! Definitely try the Misty Isle Gin and Cuillin beers (brewed on site!). The rooms are beautiful, a Scottish high end finish and super homely! The Loch Ness Inn is convenient to the town's bus stop and so helpfully stored our luggage for us while we walked over to the castle! We also had a really delicious lunch in the Inn's restaurant- the falafel burger for both of us. The Inn's staff went above and beyond making our visit to their town and nearby historic sites more streamlined and easy, not only with our luggage issue, but they also helped us locate a taxi driver to collect us from the castle so we'd be able to catch our next bus in time!

This property contains both the Loch Ness bunk-house & the Loch Ness Inn. When they could not fit…read moreour family in at the B&B Inn for our whole stay they suggested we take a family room in the bunk house for one of our nights. So having taken a family of four to both Ill give you some tips. They are both lovely ways to stay but if you want your kids close and safe while still having a door between you for alone time with your partner stay in the inn. If you plan to make your own meals to save money stay in the bunkhouse. But even if you choose the bunkhouse it's worth paying for a breakfast in the Inn.
