We were in Scotland on our Honeymoon and at this point of our trip had spent two weeks and 800 miles driving all over this beautiful country. We had marveled at how bizarre it was that with all this time and all this driving we had yet to encounter a single rude person in all of Scotland. Until the Dornie Hotel. Walking into the bar you would've thought we had flounced into someone's home uninvited. Not a single bartender acknowledged our presence. An entire sports team sprawled across one whole end of the bar and nobody so much as moved a toe to allow us the space to move through them and to grab a seat. The bar staff didn't ask us what we'd like to drink or make any suggestions as to what was on tap. When I asked for vodka and cranberry juice I was told "We don't have that, the soft drinks are there" as she pointed towards the cooler below the bar. Last time I checked cranberry was a juice and not a carbonated soda, but whatever. I then asked for vodka and orange juice and received an eye roll. My husband requested a sample of a local beer and that was haphazardly slid into his direction. We decided to try some food instead and asked if we could grab a table. She grunted and tossed her head over her shoulder in the direction of the dining room. We pushed our way through the rude crowd and into the hotel where we waited for approximately 10 minutes before being spoken to by the waiter. After ordering a cheese plate we were given three really wonderful cheeses that unfortunately were being served with some real crap sides : a piece of celery that had been cut into slivers so thin you could've used them as a toothpick, and the same with the one slice of apple that had been sliced into paper thin sheets. It was such a shame to stumble upon such an adorable town that seemed to be filled with people loathe to deal with two well-mannered tourists. Definitely not a place I would ever recommend.

Shown a mini tour of the lodge and brought to "the big room". The dining room with about 8 tables. Neatly decorated with gold framed paintings of the lineage of the hotel. We were gifted some complementary fizz for our anniversary which was so special. Spectacular service, my husband was interested in some whisky and the hostess/whisky expert/amazing woman came to ask what he likes and recommend something. He loved what he got, a local whisky made down the road. We had the special of the day: Pie and Pud. Mine was cheese and leek and his was venison. Delicious! The first dish we've had in Scotland where even the vegetables were seasoned. Perfect pastry and such savory flavors. We were almost too full for the pud! Almost. Toffee pudding and chocolate brownie were intensely sweet and yummy. After dessert, we were welcome to have tea in the parlor, but of course! Great views of the loch while having fresh loose leaf tea, homemade shortbread, and a crackling fireplace. The steak, ordered medium rare, came out a little more done than medium rare and was not a sirloin. The sticky toffee pudding was not bad, a little overly sweet. My friends got the salmon and the scallops. The scallops were absolutely great. The salmon that came as an appetizer was an imaginative dish: hot salmon on top of cold salmon. There are dozens of activities to participate in courtesy of the hotel and surroundings. We took advantage of the landscape, and did two beautiful hikes along the lochs, and partway up one of the nearby mountains.

When they could not fit…read moreour family in at the B&B Inn for our whole stay they suggested we take a family room in the bunk house for one of our nights. So having taken a family of four to both Ill give you some tips. They are both lovely ways to stay but if you want your kids close and safe while still having a door between you for alone time with your partner stay in the inn. If you plan to make your own meals to save money stay in the bunkhouse. But even if you choose the bunkhouse it's worth paying for a breakfast in the Inn.
