A wonderful stay! The Glenegedale House is a perfect place to stay while exploring Islay. We stayed in a front room - comfortable and a nice view. The hosts are welcoming and gracious. We traveled across Scotland for over 3 weeks, and this was our favorite stay! Glenegedale House (Emma and Graeme) gave us the most beautiful memories for a lifetime. The wonderful experience started even before we arrived. Their pre-arrival communications assured us our upcoming stay was in the best hands...and upon arriving, we quickly learned that the accommodations, culinary experiences, and Islay insights for all our local day trips would be world class; and, they were!!! Glenegedale House is such a cozy, inviting house, exceptionally well-appointed throughout, including the wonderful bedrooms that inspired us with a real sense of tranquility. Glenegedale is also surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Islay. Graham and Emma are excellent chefs and each meal was a culinary masterpiece...incorporating fresh-caught seafood, other locally-produced foods, and Islay's amber elixirs into an amazing experience. From Graham's special Islay porridge, to the seafood platter that included scallops someone on Islay dove for that day...Graham and Emma make each guest feel extra special. We will never forget the presentation and the deliciousness of each meal. Their knowledge of Islay and their deep relationships across the island, also added to our visits to historic sites, distilleries, and craft shops. We amended some of our itinerary, based on their insights and we're so glad we did. They've given us a much better appreciation for the island and the people of Islay. This was an extraordinary experience because of our stay at Glenegedale House. Greatest experience I had in Islay is definitely has to do a lot with this place. Graeme and Emma go out of their way to make your stay memorable and most comfortable. They helped me a lot with traveling arrangements, transportation, distilleries etc. The hotel is located right across the street from the airport and is more than convenient for those coming in by plane. I unfortunately could only stay for one night here. I was expecting a nice B&B but this place was so above what I could have hoped for. Emma met us outside the front door and received us straight off. Helped with my friend's bag, offered us a cup of tea and coffee on a very nice silver service along with some delicious home baking and then proceeded to help us replan our next day based on her local expertise. She even cancelled our previous tour reservations and reserved our new one. The reception parlor and back living room were stunning as was the bedroom although a bit on the smaller side (but the space was used well). Everything was spotless clean. We were wowed the second we stepped in and again every time we moved to another room in the house. The breakfast was absolutely mind boggling. You can get full on all the fresh and prepared fruits and cereal that is laid out for you to ogle in amazement. But then you get your orangy bread which is a cake, toast, porridge and choice of full Hebrides Scottish breakfast with sausage, bacon, beans, haggis, mushrooms, the works all cooked and arranged on the plate to perfection or you can go simple with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Or anything in between. Raw honey with a touch of Bowmore is one of the toast topping options along with hand made marmalade and strawberry jam. The porridge (oatmeal) was the best I've ever had with it being creamy yet an al dente oat texture remaining and the touch of Laphroaig 10 Emma suggested like her grandfather used to do rounded out the flavor nicely. If you stay for more than a day Emma preps you an afternoon tea basket with hot water thermos and choice of teas along with home baking. I don't know how you top the top notch service, amenities, accommodations along with a homey feel. I would rather stay here than a Ritz Carlton any day and I've spent months in nice Ritz's which I thought were great. Next time I will stay a minimum of four days. A quarter of the time I just want to sit in the lounges and reading a book while looking out on the ocean, tip of Ireland (on a good day) or the infrequent airplanes that come in and I am an activity but who always tries to cram as much as I can into a trip. read more

If you're going to Islay, an island of around 2700 inhabitants, this is the best place to stay. I'm sure there are less expensive hotels or other bed and breakfasts, but you won't get the rich background and loving care of Emma and Graeme. They are extremely hospitable and provided enough suggestions and historical background to keep the conversations going for hours. The ferry that arrives to Islay on the port on the south side is a short 10 minute drive to the glenegedale house next to the airport. It was a bit difficult to find when we took the 6pm ferry, but if you ask any locals, they will tell you exactly where to go. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone waves. This is just a quirk to convince you to visit Islay, although I'm sure the real reason is the 3 big peaty distilleries (Argbeg, Lagavullin, and Laphroaig). The old house in which we stayed has class written all over it. Antiques had collected there for years and they all somehow match the theme: relaxation. With the fireplace roaring once we settled in, we sat drinking a warm local whisky and planned out our days ahead on the island. The bedroom I stayed in downstairs had the heated electric blanket, which made my night after spending so much freezing time on the ferry. As a bed and breakfast goes, this one is top notch. The final test of the breakfast did not disappoint either. The fresh eggs from the backyard and the incredible selection of foods made this scottish breakfast my favorite from the whole trip. Fresh fruit was arranged to look incredibly photogenic and I think I had enough to skip lunch. I'm glad to have been one of Emma and Graeme's first guests at Glenegedale House (Emma's parents previously hosted the B&B) and I'm sure they will do extremely well in the years to come.
