True Story: I had to use a passport and go through customs to get a haircut here…read more People (including the people at the border) thought I was crazy. I don't care - It was TOTALLY worth it and I plan to continue the insanity every time I need my locks trimmed! If you have curly hair you know the lengths a curly girl will go to for a good haircut. I have received one too many bad haircuts in my life to take any more risk with my curls. Luckily, even though I have to go to a different country to get a cut, Jennessa is not too far from me. Jennessa has the cutest curly-centric boutique on the face of the earth. One shampoo bowl, one cutting chair, one drying chair and walls filled with curly hair product. Basically my dream place. I have been addicted to devacurl products (the line Jennessa uses) as well as the whole curly girl method for about 7 years now. I have had cuts in Chicago, NYC and Michigan. My experience with Jennessa was BY FAR the best. Jennessa has taken it upon herself to become the curly hair guru of Canada. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to sit in her chair. I learned so much from her and she was wonderful to speak to. You truly can feel how passionate she is about curly hair and helping everyone discover their inner curly girl! A haircut with Jennessa is not just a cut - its a lesson, an experience. I learned so many new things during my appointment. I feel like a brand new curly girl! Jennessa cuts curly hair like it should be cut - dry and curl by curl. She is also trained, certified and an educator for http://www.devacurl.com/. After my cut I am not only sporting a super cute refreshed look but I feel like my curls got a whole new life (after some product suggestions that she gave me). If you have curly hair I understand not wanting to be crazy like me and going across the border all the time for cuts - but do it at least once. Learn about your curls. Get a lesson from the master. You will be so happy that you did! (she does book up very quickly so plan in advance!)

I can honestly say for the first time in my life, I actually feel like my hair is pretty. The salon: Super, super classy. The atmosphere was peaceful and welcoming. Also for those with sensitive respiratory systems, it did not really smell like most salons do. Aaaaand, they have me AMAZING coffee! :D The cut: I didn't really have a clear idea of what I wanted, and I did a terrible job of explaining, but she worked magic and was super happy to take suggestions and I NEVER felt like she was taking over. She and all the other stylists were super affirming and I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair in my entire life. Even with just the cut and set I learned tons about how to care for my hair eich was dry as a rock. Don't be scared of the price, if you already dislike your hair, what do you have to lose? And if you love your hair, I promise you won't regret it. They will only even make your curls better, no matter the state they are in.

Actually, everyone I've met at the salon is friendly and helpful, and from what I've seen, the other stylists do a great job, too. My balayage was really brassy and I had a few grey stragglers on top of my head I needed to have covered up. When I walked in, the pictures online don't even do the salon justice. It is so beautiful inside, I loved the ambiance, the staff was very friendly and the free coffee didn't hurt either. Jessica was very warm and friendly, offered some suggestions on the look I was trying to accomplish and the end result was simply amazing. I've had pretty bad color experiences before, but I will definitely be sticking with Jessica as long as I can! She even massaged my head/scalp and gave me under eye gel pads to help soothe my puffy under eye area...it felt like a mini spa get away.

Temperature checks are taken upon entry and masks are worn by everyone. I also loved the online appointment system. It was easy to follow and use. I didn't mind paying a deposit. I think that all salons should do the same. The staff (the woman at reception and my braider) were both very friendly and accommodating. I really enjoyed my braider. She had great energy. She was engaging without talking too much. She was professional and didn't engage in chatter with others. She simply braided my hair and got me out in good time. My complaints, however, include my displeasure with the hair used. It was the "house" hair, that which the shop provides. It was very itchy and hard. I scratched constantly the first few days. My second complaint, unfortunately was that the braider didn't pull my hair extremely tight, however, I did receive several bumps and irritation along my hairline. Also, the front of my hairstyle looked amazing, but upon a thorough inspection after I got home, I noticed that the size of the braids in back varied and could have been done so much neater and uniform. If I return, I would definitely bring my own hair and speak with the braider about my expectations before she starts.

I made my reservation online and paid a $25 deposit for the appointment. $200 knotless Medium box braids. I arrived to my appointment on time. After a few minutes of setting up her station my braider was finally ready for me to sit in the chair. She began to do my hair and then announced that she was not capable of doing the style that I was booked for. Her fingers were too big. She asks if the stylist across from us would switch clients with her. This was not an issue. The problem arose when they contacted the owners to see what the difference in price would be to have the other girls start my hair. Apparently my hair was shorter in the back so the braids would need to be smaller. My stylist couldn't do the smaller braids because she said her fingers were too big. The young ladies needed to contact the owner to find out if they could switch clients and if it was okay to do two different size braids in my hair. After 30 minutes I was told the price would be an additional $135. That was ridiculous. I was told the receptionist would call me to discuss the inconvenience. When she had not called after 30 minutes I was told to call her. The first time I caught the phone rang until the voicemail picked up. The second time I called I was sent straight to voicemail. When the receptionist finally called me back, she told me that I could not get my deposit back because the deposit is specifically for the appointment and they showed up at the appointment one time. The reason I couldn't get my hair braided is because of the condition of my hair and not the capability of their braider. I will not be going to them ever again. I went to Pikine African Hair Braiding and they were able to braid my hair with no issues. My hair was not too short to get the medium size braids I wanted.
