Walked in after an appointment mixup at another salon, to see if they could squeeze me in for a blowout. Ashley took me back to the shampoo bowls within seconds and gave me an incredible shampoo and condition! Not only is she an angel and so much fun to chat with, she is so incredibly talented! I don't really know what to say here. I went in for partial balayage highlights with some extra light front pieces, with a photo and asked him to help reshape the one side of my hair that had a little more disconnected and thick layers. I walked out with very short hair that has bright white stripes all over it... and it took 3 1/2 hours. He literally tried to finely paint every highlight with a fine brush like it was a masters painting and was so proud of his creation at the end. I was just in shock. He spent the whole 3.5 hours trying to teach me about all he learned at Aveda hair school, which he must have just graduated. How does any professional stylist let a client leave with medium brown hair with white stripes and why would you do the highlights like this? I just ordered some toner and some hair and nails vitamins. There's no saving this at this point and I'm not letting him touch my hair again. I guarantee if I went back for a toner, it would somehow take another hour to apply. The cut isn't terrible, but it's just not what I asked for. 3 words. Danchi. is. AMAZING. For a $25 first time deal, I was shocked that she was so patient to spend 1.5 hours working on me. I had not cut my long, single length hair for over 6 months so asking for layers, shape, and volume was like asking someone to build Rome from scratch in a day. We chatted the whole time and she is the most knowledeable stylist I've ever had. She does A-lines, pixies, and all types of crazy coloring as well. This is way overdue and a reminder to myself. Third time getting a cut at Givea and I am happy to say that I've never left disappointed. I'm not a big planner, so all three times I've called the same day and they've been able to accommodate me into their schedule. Sierra was my stylist for two of my three visits and I am very grateful for it! She is AMAZING! She's managed to fix my hair twice after I've mistakenly used another salon for a cut. This is for facials with Susie. I'd actually give her 3 or even 4 stars for her actual skincare technique/facials, but there were a couple of issues. Her skincare technique was pretty decent. She does a fair amount of massage work and you can tell she has the 20 years of experience she says she has. I believe she uses only Aveda products. I actually got some really good advice from her to use witch hazel every now and again to clear up my skin. Now, the unfortunate cons... 1. She has SEVERELY limited availability. I purchased 3 facials up front with Susie because I called to check availability before purchasing the Groupon. By the time I was done with my 3rd facial, she told me her availability would be even more limited. I think she knew I wasn't interested in coming back. 2. The massage area used to be in a separate building, but they must have done some remodeling because there's a tiny room within the salon itself now. It's actually quite clean, but noise blocking is not too great. 3. This really is not Susie's fault, but I was pretty disappointed when I came for my second facial early (probably 10-15 minutes) and she was at the salon, but had to cancel. Her mom had a fall, so I felt really bad, but it would have been nice for her to call me before I arrived and paid for parking (street parking by the way). Again, if the incident with her mom had just happened, it's really outside the realm of Susie's control, but sad that I had talked to her the day before (or within a week before the appointment) and due to her limited availability, I had to move around my own plans. 4. Finally, the last scheduling related gripe. I don't leave things up to chance. I always confirm a few days in advance that my appointment is still set. Did the same thing with Susie. I think it was also the second facial when I called and Susie said I didn't have an appointment. I wrote it in my phone after confirming several times on the date and time with her in person after my first appointment. She may have even given me an appointment card. According to Susie, their appointment booking system had gone down so they may have lost some appointments. Not cool. Susie is on the chatty side, so be aware of that. I really wanted this relationship to work out as I like to get a facial at least once a month. I felt like it was reasonably priced for the quality, but not worth the drama with scheduling. Also, metered street parking, but you can find free residential street parking if you have the time. read more

I was asked what I wanted...a simple bob evening up. That's all. They said their prices ran from $35-$75; they couldn't make an appointment then...they would match me to a suitable stylist. He was Sebastian, charging $60. Sebastian is an older man who phoned me twice asking how long my hair was as he has arthritis. He had forgotten he had also called the day before. Oh my! This certainly turned out to be my worst massage experience ever. I got a coupon for a 45-min reflexology treatment and 30-minute facial. Showed up for my appointment about 10-min early and discovered the Salon is a nail and hair salon. No one greeted me nor looked my way. I had to get the attention of a guy sweeping the floor to be told "Philip" wasn't there yet. "Philip" showed up but didn't come for me until 15-minutes after my appointment time. With minimal verbal communication, the gaunt, tattooed, and pierced "reflexologist" motioned for me to follow him. We left the Salon, went a few storefronts away, and entered what seemed like an apartment building. So I'm getting creeped out. I asked if my facial would be done here as well and he mumbled yes. Once in this new space I said "you're a man of few words" and he responded that he was stressed out because he forgot about the BART strike. Well, the BART strike was delayed due to the governor's intervention. Mind you, this guy never apologized for being late and was obviously lying or sadly misinformed. I stood there and thought...do I want this person touching my body? I left telling him that I couldn't imagine the reflexology being a healing experience with him. read more

I've been meaning to write a review for Givae and Devishi, my hair stylist, for months. It really does take some time to find your own hair stylist that you would go to more than once. I finally found that person and she's in Oakland, a few blocks away from where I live! Givae Salon is conveniently located for me with decent amount of parking nearby (although you might not want to park at a metered spot if your appointment will be long). I first went to Givae Salon back in February for a sporadic short/medium cut. I was nervous because I haven't had a blunt and short cut in a while. I have a ton of thick hair and every hair stylist I go to would comment on that fact so it's tough to have such a short haircut with it not looking too poofy. I put my trust in Devishi and I think she did a fabulous job! Second visit was in mid-June. I decided to get a natural, not too obvious, ombre look for the summer. There was a specific light brown shade I was trying to get but it was tough to get that outcome the first time since I'm Asian and Asians have a red tint in their hair and I was trying to get an ashy light brown. After the session, it didn't come out the way I wanted it to because the top half of my hair wasn't dark enough and the bottom wasn't light enough. I came back later that week to get it colored a second time. After some patience, it came out exactly how I wanted it to. In between waiting around in the Salon, one of the masseuses offered me tea a few times, which was nice. Also offered me a massage on the chair but didn't have time since I was called back to the hair station...bummer! Hopefully next time Nice clean salon in a nice neighborhood. I've always wanted to write for my favorite hair artist, Danchi, but I've never had the time to do so. When I moved to the bay 4 years ago, my hair was puffy, dry, frizzy, damaged, choppy. I didn't like my hair back then. She happened give my hair a gorgeous makeover, and not only that, she gave me helpful advice that helped me give my hair a better care. I actually love my hair now for the fact that it stays healthy and has pretty layers with natural looking highlights. My friends give me a lot of compliment about my hair, and I love it! I walked into Givae Salon on a whim in 2005 when I lived in the neighborhood. I first saw Sebastian, a lovely man who not only does a spectacular job, but always has a joke for his clients. The next time I walked in for a touch-up Sebastian happened to be off. Thus began my salon love affair with Dan-Chi, who I simply got by chance and who is unquestionably the best hair stylist ever to get her hands on my hair. Dan-Chi has now been cutting my hair since 2005, and I couldn't be happier. We have been through all stages of hair together - shoulder-length, spiky short, you name it. Each time, she brings an incredible knowledge of what will actually complement my face shape, and I trust her completely to do what she thinks would look best given the general style I'm looking for. Although I usually only go for a haircut, Dan-Chi has also colored my hair, with terrific results. She also gives a scalp massage with every cut. Heavenly! Most recently, I decided to go from a mild a-line to a short cut (cropped close in the back with long pieces in the front), and it is to date the best cut I have received yet. Please see the attached "before and after" photos. As a general comment, I will also say that simply being at Givae is a pleasure. I have found all of the stylists to be wonderfully friendly and personable, particularly Juvi, the owner (please forgive any misspelling here). I hadn't got my haircut since last March and was ready to lose about 6 inches of dead hair. Danshi spent the time to look at my hair, face shape and talk about my haircut. CONSUMER BE WARE: I can't believe they received one good review. I walked in today to just inquire about their services and was treated with such rudeness I was shocked. The person at the front was clueless and the man in the front who was cutting a person's hair looked at me with pure dIstain. The shop was pretty empty. There was no excuse for them to be so rude. I had been going to 7 Salon but no longer wanted to pay $215 for a cut & boliage. Givae told me their price for the same service was $150. Apparently this was a miscommunication because when I went to pay at the register they said it was $190 :( Not only that but I told the stylist, Holly, just to match what I already had going on with my hair, which was blond highlights using boliage. She said she did boliage, which usually results in a more natural look as it's painted on vs using foils, but Holly painted the color on everywhere instead of just thin pieces so it looked like a got an all over color. So imagine the top inch or so completely blond (and even lighter than what I had) on top of light brown with blond highlights. Now, 6 weeks later, the regrowth is much more noticeable because of the dark roots growing in with a ring of very blond hair beneath. I am going to a different salon next week who said they could blend it in so fingers crossed. Holly was very nice, but IMO is not very good at applying boliage. For $190 I expect professional coloring. This was a disappointing experience and unfortunately the consequences to hair can take a year or more to work out... read more

My original review on this place was 9/26/2012 and I gave them five stars. Since then Givae has lost Moe and like some salons do...they didnt tell me which salon she moved to. They promised me they could provide the same quality cut as Moe gave me but I didnt want to chance finding out. So as of now my review of this place has gone down to three stars. 9/26/2012: On a whim I called there and Moe fit me in as her last appointment. I asked for a haircut she would like to see on an older guy like me and she gave me her special "Handsome Men's Haircut"! She is AWESOME!!!!! Moe knows what she is doing and she gave me the best haircut of my life tonight!!!!! Ask for Moe! Suzie gives the best facials ever. My face was awesome for like six months (without another facial). She really takes the time to work through the details of your face and treats it like she is crafting a fine piece of art. Notably, I had one of those annoying white bumps above my eye that other estheticians said they could not remove, or I needed to pay an exorbitant fee. Suzie didn't bat an eye, she just took it off. I haven't written a yelp review in many years, but I just had such a bad experience I feel compelled to share to warn others. Pregnant women: do not get a massage here! I got a Groupon for a one hour massage, maybe the Groupon should have been my first warning that the massages here are no good, but honestly the cost of a regular massage is outside my budget and I was so happy to see a Groupon for massage that included prenatal that I booked it right up. There were red flags from the start and I wish I had just left but I kept thinking, ok, it's already paid for, give it a chance... I've had a few prenatal massages in my life so I was expecting some sort of special set-up. Normally there are special pillows allowing you to lie on your stomach, or at least a number of bolsters and pillows to help you be comfortable on your side. Here there were two thin bed pillows and I had to awkwardly hold my arm under my head to try to be comfortable. I assumed (my fault) that in order to offer prenatal massage you must have some sort of training but that doesn't seem to be true. The masseuse actually asked me to lie on my back (at 9 months pregnant!). Anyone who works with pregnant women knows that this is actually dangerous after 16-20 weeks. It's the most basic rule. I'm so confused, am I the first prenatal client they have had? I also spent 90% of the time on my right side which made me pretty uncomfortable (it's recommended to mainly lie on your left side when pregnant) but I didn't say anything which is my fault. All in all the massage experience was bad. The room was super bright and the masseuse never checked in with me on my comfort or how the pressure was or anything like that. I should have trusted my instincts and spoken up or left, but I think I give to much credit to people who are supposedly experts and I kept assuming she knew what she was doing even though she didn't. At least after a massage, even a not great one, you should expect to feel relaxed or at least to have had a nice back rub. I feel more uncomfortable than ever, my neck is in so much pain from being in this awkward uncomfortable position and not having proper support. When I left the service I texted my husband "just had the worst massage ever, I'm so disappointed I want to cry". I really hope they stop offering prenatal massage until they have proper training and set-up :-( read more

Dan Chi is a hair stylist GODDESS!!! I've been a loyal customer of Givae Salon for the past 3 years. Im not one to keep up with maintenance on trimming my hair every 3-6 months, and Im super picky with who I let touch my hair - but when I do go in for a fresh cut Dan Chi is my go-to woman!! In the past I've only shown her photographs of the cut & style I was trying to achieve. She'd take a peek at the photo and would immediately start working her magic. I've got long & thick hair, but it was no challenge for her. She's always super friendly and we have a great time catching up - always took her time with layering, blow drying and the use of hot tools. She made sure I was happy with the results before I left her chair. Offering me great tips and advice formulated for my hair type, and how to carry on this look at home. I ALWAYS GO TO ERIC for a hair cut and a few of my friends do as well. He is well loved in the Oakland community. The funny thing is...I live in New York but somehow manage to only have Eric cut my hair. I've actually followed him from one of his previous salons to Givae. Every time he cuts it I love it! As someone with curly hair I know it can be scary going to a new stylist but I completely trust Eric with my curls. For my last cut (which I love!) I brought in a picture of a short bob with straight across bangs. When I showed the picture to Eric he immediately knew the cut wouldn't work with my hair. He sat down with me and spent about 15 minutes showing me similar cuts that would work with my hair. He is also a perfectionist... something I love in a hair stylist. I've visited this salons in the past for other reasons but yesterday I visited givae to fix my hair. I was happy that I was able to get an appointment that afternoon. My hair was so fried from a HORRIBLE bleach job I got at another salon (La Princess Salon in Alameda Ca) because of that I was kind of scared I would have to cut off a huge chunk BUT Marine was able to bring my hair back to life! Do NOT go to this salon if you want anything stylish or trendy!!! Roze gave me the worst color and bang job of my life. I made an appointment with Rose because a good friend had recommended her and the pricing at this salon is fairly decent. She's a very friendly person and so were the people that worked there but Rose has terrible hair herself. Rule number when when you want advice on style or color, is don't take it from someone who has poor style! All of the stylists that were working that day had very plain hair and most of the clients were older with common hair cuts. I don't have anything crazy, just shoulder length hair, but it's always cut and textured very well. I went in and needed a root touch up and also wanted a slight tone so my super blonde summer hair was a little darker for the fall. I specified that I still wanted to be blonde but not platinum. Okay, so first she turned my hair ash gray. Upon 'fixing' it (adding more chemicals to my hair because a non-chemical toner was for some reason not the best option) I now have a mousy brown color that looks terrible with my eyebrows and complexion. But I don't want to bleach it again because my hair is damaged already. Plus, she didn't bleach my roots and then add color, so now my roots are very brassy and still a different color than the rest of my hair. For the cut, all I wanted was a trim. I understand that bangs are difficult, but if you are a stylist please do not fuck them up completely. Which is what she did. She seems like she really wants to do what the client wants. But she kept asking me how to cut my bangs. I told her my idea of what I want, but I'm not a hairdresser and I wanted her to do what she thinks would look good because I don't know much about actually cutting hair. This is why I am not a stylist. The 'bangs' she gave me look like I've been trying to grow a bad bang cut out for the last month or so. She might be ok at giving clients an easy trim or whatever, but she does not seem to be able to visualize what would look good on a client. DO NOT GO TO HER FOR COLOR. Please! I am writing this two weeks after my visit and still absolutely hate what she did. I have a 'hair fix' appointment tonight so wish me luck! And don't go here read more
