It stunk and the animals were in bad conditions. We saw two parrots that were actively trying to escape. There was also 4 bunnies that i saw in a tiny little cage. We buy all of our fish from here! They are always friendly and helpful when we are there and ask them questions. Not the fanciest of places but I have had better luck with all my fish from here than anywhere else. They also have a wide variety of fish and other animal products. read more

Gittler's is kind of like a Johnstown institution. One of the few things in Johnstown that everyone seems to know about, and for as long as I can remember, one thing that has not changed. Gittler's to me is the hot spot to go and grab yourself a new aquarium friend. Yeah, yeah, go to Petco if you wish, but at the same time that you are paying for a fish that will most likely die on the way home, I'll take my time and browse around the many tanks and find exactly what I wanted in the first place. Aside from the obvious that they would have up for sale on the inside, Gittler's also offers many items for your four legged housemates as well. I had stopped here the other day, really near their closing time, to grab a much needed item. Not only did they have it and saved me from having to go elsewhere, they allowed me in to grab it and weren't too upset about how close I came to closing. Really appreciated that. read more

recently bought a few fish to add to my 75 gallon along with some different plants. it was my fault for not quarantining the new additions before adding them in to the tank and unfortunately I'm now treating my entire aquarium for ich. 4 out of the 8 fish I got from there have died so far along with 1 snail. hoping this situation soon turns out for the better bc it's been pretty devastating. read more

I will not be buying animals from this shop ever again. They do not health check and sell animals "as is". Never should a breeder sell an animal "as is"... red flag. At first I had a great experience with this shop and thought it was a cute little place. However..... I have purchased many rats from them and- they all have died suddenly. I have been owning rats for 11 years and NEVER have I had rats die on me suddenly. What's worse, I had purchased a female dumbo after getting two other top ear girls from a breeder she got my other two females sick and then 2 died the other had to be put down. I had boys from gittlers as well and they died very suddenly just recently. I am experienced with rat care having them on high quality food and the proper care, lots of free roam time and appropriate sized cage.... this experience is unbelievable heartbreaking. Horrible customer service! I was just there and heard an employee yelling at a young girl! He was so rude to her! Luckily a large man stepped in to defend her. The employee puffed his chest up at him and continued on his rant. Not sure what it was over but the poor girl look traumatized. read more

This place needs to be shut down ASAP. No one buy animals from here, if you do don't expect them to love more than 2 weeks. They don't meet any of the basic care requirements for any of the animals they are selling they all look like they're dying. Ridiculous how the animals here are kept. read more

We always get all of our hamsters here and they actually out live most of all the ones we have gotten for Pet Smart or Petco. The hamsters also tend to have a better temperament than other hamsters that we have purchased from other chain pet stores. It's a nice place to go especially if you're looking for some more exotic pets like chinchillas or rabbits, they are one of the only shops that I know of in the laurel highlands that sell these animals, you can also get various reptiles and other pets you may wish to have. The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable it's a great place to go :)! read more

Pros: Nice well stocked shop. Friendly staff and a lot of fish tanks. Con: One lady refused to net the fish we wanted, she just wanted to net us whatever she could catch. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Every other fish shop I been to ALWAYS nets exactly the fish we want. So be ready in case you get her yourself. Con: They only give a 3 day warranty on fish, Petco gives 30 days and Petsmart gives 14 days. I do not expect Gittlers to give that many since they are a local pet store and not a national chain, but I do expect at least 7-10 days on fish. Can take a stressed out fish from being bagged and moved a week to die and I am not buying a $15 Cichlid with only a 3 day warranty So unless they have something at the shop I can not find anywhere else I do not buy my fish here. Which is to bad cause I would like to support them being a one store owner. Just change your fish warranty to 7 days and I bet more people would buy fish from you. read more
