My husband booked us 2 nights for my birthday weekend. He added the birthday celebration package which included a strawberry shortcake. The cake was divine! The strawberries were bursting with flavor and the whipped cream appeared to be homemade. They included a lovely bouquet of roses with a vase we got to take home. The host was kind and attentive. We were greeted by the innkeeper who was a little frazzled and repeated himself a lot. During the happy hour, it seemed a little odd to serve $2.99 Barefoot white wine. We stayed in the Gingerbread Suite and some of the paint in the bathroom is peeling. We made a 9 AM reservation for breakfast and were the first to arrive but the last to eat. Other tables that had special requests had their plates brought out first. My waffles were a little underdone. Innkeeper served us last with a short apology but nothing else as he ran back into the kitchen. Was a little disappointed with our stay at this location and would not recommend. read more

Stayed 5/18. Got rearended on way to reservation and called at 530 pm. Was given instructions for late check in by Olivia and asked what time for breakfast 8, 9 or 10 am. Had a tsunami warning at 440am, quite rattling. Got up at 8, went got a mimosa to enjoy while soaking in tub, also said ill see you at 10 for my breakfast reservation. Showed up at 10, young male employee said we have cleaned up the kitchen and dining room not set. Was given a to go box with cold pancakes, refused syrup, no utensils, no table in room, not allowed to sit at dining table. Treated as though i did something wrong. They claim to be a Bed and Breakfast, then they should make sure they feed all their guests. Highly disappointing and rude! read more

There isn't enough words to say on how much I loved this place. The lady met me and helped me with my luggage to the 2nd floor. Super quiet and homey with fireplaces going. The rooms are amazing. She said I was able to look at any rooms with the doors open and they were so cool unique! So big and nice. My room was so cute and the bed had a stool to get into the bed. They are so high and comfy. I can't tell you enough about how comfortable the beds are. Slippers and robes for you to use. And clean! So clean! Big bathroom. 4-6 is free apps and wine and water. It was so nice . She had it all set up and so beautiful and I sat by the fireplace drinking wine and eating apps. And you can for 2 hours! And lots of appetizers to choose from. Finger foods but couldn't be more perfect. Ferndale is a very small town. One strip of shops and restaurants and one saloon bar. The mansion is walking distance to the strip. Perfect location. All the cable channels you need and I had the best sleep. I can't say enough how homey it is for it being so huge with so many rooms. For breakfast that is included it's all set up in another room with pre set menus . I am dairy free only and saw the menu and thought oh well I will pick and choose what I can eat. She walked up and said I saw your note on the reservation I made you an entire dairy free breakfast with blueberry muffin, eggs with vegan butter , potatoes, bacon etc. I couldn't believe how nice that was that I gave her a tip which I know wasn't required. But it was the sweetest thing. This is well worth seeing and staying . I spent one night at the casino across the river and one night here for a more restful night . Perfect weekend! read more

My husband and I stayed in the Garden room this past Friday night. The host who greeted us was super friendly and gave us a brief tour as well a suggestions for restaurants within walking and driving distance. Beautiful Interior and grounds, well kept room and spacious restroom. My only complaint is even though I really enjoyed all of the antique furniture, our bed was Super Creaky! I was scared move at all... it was that noisy lol! And it kinda sloped down so you were sleeping in a V position. We chose the 8:00 am breakfast as we had early plans for the day. There were two other couples seated in the dinning room when we arrived. I did feel like the hostess for breakfast was a little short with us vs the other two couples in the dining room at the time. She seemed very friendly with the other couples, even offering them sausage or bacon with their meal and asking if everything was ok, etc. When it came to us she was super short, clunked our plates down in front of us rather harsh, and that was it. I ran into her again to ask about where to leave the keys when we checked out and was met with the same kind of curt attitude. Overall we had just an okay stay. Not sure if I'd recommend to friends or family given how I was made to feel semi unwelcome. But I am glad we got to stop and see the quaint little town and enjoyed the Victorian architecture. read more

On our spontaneous road trip up the coast, my fiancé and I decided to stay in Ferndale. We managed to get the last room at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn on a Saturday night. The staff were extremely welcoming and accommodating. We arrived just in time for tea. This consisted of a variety of teas, cheeses, cured meats, crackers, and small pastries. Oh, did I mention there was also wine? We enjoyed teatime in the parlor next to a beautiful fireplace. Our room was on the first floor and was quite spacious. My biggest qualm was the bed. It was a little too sunken in for my liking. As for the included breakfast, we enjoyed a variety of pastries, coffee, and a hot plate. The hot plate while we were there was a quiche with fresh fruit and breakfast potatoes. All in all, a very quaint little town and a pleasant place to stay. read more

...so my daughter got a week off for Thanksgiving break, she is seven, and for a week prior to her vacation we looked and looked and looked for a wonderful place to stay and we have been all over together, I am her father. We found this beautiful place online and checked it out and booked it immediately and we couldn't be happier that we did! wow what an experience what an amazing place, it's absolutely kept clean and organized and fireplaces everywhere that are running that leave you feeling just so comfortable. Plenty of games to play and plenty of rooms to explore, my daughter and I played hide and seek for hours and it was just amazing. And then we had breakfast, and it was absolutely beautiful and delicious, in fact our second day there we were served in the most classy and elegant style the very best biscuits and gravy I've ever had in my life. The mistress of the house Olivia was incredibly classy and accommodating, we will absolutely be coming back to this wonderful Jewel of a place. And there's plenty to do in the surrounding areas, like this amazing rock store only about 10 minutes away, plus you have the bay to play in, plus not too far is a really cool zoo. We drove up from the Bay Area and had the best time. It is a very quiet town, not too much going on, so it's good if you want to get away and enjoy some quiet. There is a beach 10 minutes away with barely any people so you can lay out for hours and just relax with the only sound being the waves. The hotel was so meticulously decorated and also very clean. So much detail went into decorating it, really feels like you step back in time. We came up to celebrate our anniversary and the staff were really sweet and left flowers outside our door with a note. They were also accommodating, as we arrived earlier than the check in time. They put so much love and effort into the snacks at tea time. The breakfast was also delicious. The only downside which was minuscule was that we were on the bottom floor right next to the kitchen so the other guests woke us up early when they went in for breakfast. So if you like to sleep in, maybe request a room upstairs. I can't get over how beautiful this place was. We will definitely make the 5 hour drive again! read more

I loved the Gingerbread Mansion! It was my first time staying at a B&B, and it was a great experience. Eileen was so friendly. She greeted me, checked me in, and showed me around the property. She also cooked the delicious breakfasts. All the staff I interacted with were wonderful. Afternoon tea/wine and snacks at 4:00 were a great way to unwind from the day's adventures exploring beautiful Humboldt. I was in the Strawberry room on the second floor. It was so comfortable--the bed was really soft, but I ended up sleeping great. Ferndale is a beautiful little town, and the staff is very helpful with restaurant/shopping recommendations. Fantastic! On every level. I am a huge fan of Victorian bed and breakfasts, and have been to many over the years. This one stands out for many reasons: 1. The level of ease of booking and changing. I booked this early pandemic and had to reschedule three times! Angel, the person who almost always anwered the phone ( big points for actually picking up) was understanding, accommodating and delightful each and every time. 2. I got carried away with the romantic packing (candles, sexy nightie et al) and plumb forgot a warm coat. I shared this funny fact with Eileen, who was cooking breakfast whilst I was gettin my morning coffee. She immediately offered to lend me one of hers! She even invited me to pick the one I wanted from her closet. That was above and beyond and really appreciated as it was pretty cold the days we stayed there and I had planned to do some hiking by the coast. 3. Many B&B's I have stayed at have plastic flowers (I hate that) . This one had pretty antique vases and bowls of lovely fresh flowers through out the property. 4. One night we wanted to watch TV but the child setting was on and I coudn't figure out how to fix. Angel offered to come up and give it a try. I declined this offer but when my dude showed he said he acutally did want a movie. It was to late to get it fixed by then ( I think Angel was gone) but Eileen ( I think it was her) offered to give us another room! For us the TV was not so critical, so I was not about to put them through that (the cleaning, washing etc) but I do think it was awfully nice to offer. 5. The rooms are beautifully decorated with antiques, period wall paper, big old beds and they are CLEAN. Many B & B's suffer from dustyness ( especially the ones with plastic flowers ). We met the cleaning person, Shari and thanked her. She, like Angel and Eileen, was super personable and helpful. Seems like they have a great team at the Gingerbread and I will be staying there again for sure. In fact I have a room picked out, but am not mentioning for fear that it will be less available for me! PS. In response to folks that see the imperfections and maybe slightly funky aspects of very old buildings, including this one, let me just say that one doesn't stay at a beautiful old Victorian for perfection, ones stays there to experience history! read more

Oh my gosh , my husband and I love this place!!! We found it when Rt 101 was closed due to snow . We're so glad we did! It was a refuge of beauty and coziness. Sitting in the parlor, by the warmth of the fire, we chatted with others who were also grateful to be there , cozy and safe from the snowy roads. We stayed in the Gingerbread room and enjoyed a little picnic lunch the next day, on the tiny private porch, in the sun. And then stayed another night to rest and make sure the roads were clear so that we could continue our journey south. Eileen and Angel were so warm and welcoming and helpful! We felt comfortable and at ease. Out of the 7 hotels we stayed in during our 2 week trip from Portland to LA, it was by far the best!! Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to stay there again!! read more

The Gingerbread Mansion- Model ADA Inn A sweet stay awaits any traveler at the Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale, California. The Victorian style bed & breakfast was built in 1895 by a doctor. After living there for several years, the doctor suggested that the house be converted into a much needed hospital. The house served as the local hospital for a few years and was then turned into an apartment building. At one point, it served as an orphanage. Over the years, it deteriorated and was looking rather shabby. Two men bought the house and began working to restore it. Two women helped greatly to bring the magnificent structure back to life. In the mid-1970s it became a bed & breakfast. The beautiful building now has 11 suites, with the luxurious Empire Suite on the top floor. To the left of the entrance is the game parlor. Also on the ground floor is a tea parlor, library, and dining room. Breakfast is served in the dining room between 8:00 and 10:00 each morning. Guests can also have breakfast delivered to their room by request. Morning beverages are delivered outside of rooms each day at around 7:30 a.m. Guests do not want to miss tea time at the Gingerbread Mansion. Each afternoon between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. tea time is held. A smorgasbord of delicious treats is served along with a variety of beverages, including wine. Guests can mingle in the parlor or take their snacks outside to relax in the English Garden. Some might choose to enjoy a Swedish Massage after their tea. The Gingerbread Mansion is one of the most photographed buildings in California. It has won awards as one of the two top inns of Northern California. It is the only bed & breakfast in Humboldt County that has received the AAA four-diamond rating. Since they do not have a pool, they are not able to receive a five-diamond rating. However, the inn actually deserves a six-diamond rating since owners have gone the extra mile to accommodate handicapped guests. The inn not only has a roll-in shower for those in wheelchairs, it has a lift installed to assist disabled individuals upon entering the inn. In order to maintain the historic nature of the house, a lift was installed rather than adding a wheelchair ramp. The innkeeper is happy to assist all guests in making their stay as enjoyable as possible. If I could give more stars I would. My husband and I had an exceptional stay on our honeymoon. Granted, we were only there for a day but every aspect of our stay was wonderful. We were at the nearby redwoods hiking and got to the mansion a little late (after 6 so we missed high tea unfortunately-- which I was super excited about because we don't do things like that in Miami). We were a little worried that our late arrival would be an issue but the innkeeper, Kathy, was super delightful when we arrived. She was expecting us and was ready to give us a tour of the house. She let us know that only three rooms were full so we were able to go look at the other rooms on our own if we wanted. We totally did. There was a book on the history of the house downstairs which was interesting. She also gave us some good recommendations for places to eat in the town. In our room we had slippers and a bathrobe waiting for us. Kathy offered to turn the bed down for us while we went out for dinner in the town. The recommendation she gave us ended up being a nice one. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. The cook asked us what we wanted and was able to make it. She even added some sides as a surprise. There were also homemade muffins, various teas, coffee, and various juice available. We had a nice conversation with another two couples during that time. Overall, short visit but the house was wonderful and very well preserved. We felt well attended to and we enjoyed the town. The gardens and rooms were fun to explore. read more

My husband and I just returned home to the City after four nights at the Gingerbread Mansion Inn. It was so quiet at the Mansion and in the town of Ferndale, the atmosphere of the mansion was welcoming and calm, and we got the much-needed rest and relaxation we'd been craving after a crazy couple of years. The standouts: 1. The staff ~ Eileen, Kelsey, Davida, and Angel ~ I missed a few names ~ were all so good to us, checking to see if we needed anything, etc. 2. The Rose Suite was spacious and definitely didn't feel like a generic Holiday Inn hotel room. LOL. The bed was very comfortable. 3. The four common areas were lovely with fireplaces burning and beautiful antiques. I spent happy hours there with my knitting. The staff was kind and respectful to me as I took up "court" in the sitting rooms. We hope to make this a yearly tradition. read more

The wife and I came to this charming town to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We booked advance online at the gingerbread mansion. Honestly the place is quite charming. It definitely has the old world Victorian charm. A bit creeky and dusty. We arrived at 3 o'clock on a Saturday. We were greeted by the innkeeper but I do not recall her name. She welcomed us and showed us around the place and our accommodations. We stayed in the Veneto room. She told us about the wine and cake and cheese they have in the evening. We discussed a few the local dining options in the area as well. Again the room itself was very nice it just did not feel very comfortable for us. I think partly due to the floor which was very cold. The floor was basically marble with no runner carpet anywhere. Just kind of made the room feel cold and unwelcoming. The bed was quite comfortable however. We went downstairs for the wine and cheese and tea. No coffee though. They had a red velvet type cake. The cake tasted very dry and stale. They also had some Snickerdoodle cookies. I could've bounced him off the floor they were so hard. We kind of felt like they were kind of going through the motions as opposed to truly trying to make their guests feel welcome. So we left and went out to dinner in town which was quite nice. The innkeeper had told us they would have fresh coffee outside of our door at 7 AM. However at 7:15 I had to call down and inquire where the coffee was. It finally arrived at 7:25. It was good quality coffee however. At breakfast the staff was fine. We were not offered any choice of what to have for breakfast we were simply presented a plate of quiche and potatoes with lots and lots of onions. Other diners were eating omelettes but nobody asked us if we wanted one, we were just given the quiche. Again I kind of felt they were just going through the motions and not putting a whole lot into the meal. It is also quite possible that the bed-and-breakfast thing just may not be for us. We were the youngest couple they are by far and we were celebrating our 25th. I went back-and-forth between the two or three star on this one but just had to give it to because just do not feel the value was there for what is was. And I know we will not return here. Reading the positive reviews here on yelp many people have had different experiences here again this just might not be our thing. There's no doubt if we return to Ferndale area we will look for other lodging options. read more

We were staying here with three kids who didn't do anything to disrupt anything. The cook at the time of breakfast, insulted us for having rowdy kids and kept on going right at the time of serving breakfast. Kept on accusing us of things we didn't do at all. We had to eventually leave the table after an argument which completely ruined our vacation. She has some psych issues for sure. Definitely not worth staying here at all. Zero stars. Update: the manager called us and apologized profusely on behalf of the chef. They refunded us the money for the nights stay. We left with sad heart and sad memories since the kids were with us as well. The chef needs to have a psychiatric check up done as she does have some issues. read more

My fiancé and I went to the Gingerbread Mansion this past weekend and it was quite lovely. The building and garden itself is well kept, quaint and there were so many small attention to details. We had the garden room and had access the garden on the first floor. Check in was quick and painless thanks to Vince. He was thorough and very friendly. Breakfast was fabulous and again, Vince worked vigorously to get all he guests situated and served. We overheard a couple complain that they didn't get their own table for breakfast and it ticked us off because they do warn you if there is a full house and if you want your own table, you have to come early. Besides, this is a bed and breakfast and there will be instances where you have to sit with other people (oh my, imagine that!). The mansion also provides free bikes and kayaks to borrow. We took out the bikes for stroll along Main Street (small downtown) and loved it. The Victorian buildings in town are spectacular. Overall, I had the best time at this place! read more

This old hospital converted to a bed and breakfast is quaint and inviting on the surface. Inside is decorated with antiques that inspire a nostalgic mood. Once you get into your room this quickly fades from nostalgia to worn and outdated. The beds are soft but worn out. The shower stall is old and dilapidated with mold around the base and a shower head that is broken and not adjustable. This makes showering nearly impossible. Getting in and out of the shower is also fun as the tile floor is warped and loose with tiles bowed up in the middle and flattening our when you walk on them. This is a trip hazard and unsightly to say the least. The carpets are dirty and in need of a cleaning. I got poked by a needle that was in the carpet in front room by door (inside room). This place offers WiFi but it does not work in the room. To top this off the room rate is $320 per night. That's right $320 per night! For that price it should be stellar. I think this place had a good vision but was done on the cheap without attention to fit and finish. What a shame. I would not recommend this place at the current price and property state. This is a strong PASS for me. read more

My hubby booked a surprise two-night stay here based on a web search and yelp reviews. He got it so right! Upon our arrival, just after tea time was scheduled to end (6pm), Karen gave us a very warm greeting at the door. The Victorian style house, built in the late 1800's, had a soothing fragrant smell and the fireplaces were going. We were given a tour around the house and shown to our room, The Fountain Suite (more on that in a bit). After settling, we went downstairs to enjoy the tea time goodies even though we were late. There was plenty of wine and tea as well as a variety of snacks and treats. Our suite was magnificent. The attention to detail in the decor was the opposite of any standard cookie cutter hotel room. The uniqueness of each room we later got to peak at made us feel special to have the only room like "that". Our bedroom had an electric fireplace that gave off a fair amount of heat. And the bathROOM was perfect. Both nights we spent in our individual claw tubs by the gas fireplace in there. The breakfast served both mornings we were there were above average and filling. The staff is incredibly friendly and not stingy about dishing you more of something. We were hoping for a peaceful and relaxing weekend and the staff and accommodations met our needs and then some. We really didn't expect anything when we booked this place - and were overwhelmed by the kindness and how every detail was taken care of.
