My husband surprised me with an evening at the Shaw House Inn and it was absolutely dreamy! We stayed in the 'Isabella' room andoved the beautiful view out of the screen door out into the beautiful garden. It had a huge clawfoot bathtub, and skylight above the comfortable bed. The owner was so accommodating and friendly and check in was supe quick and friendly. The chef greeted us in the morning with a perfect breakfast, and the history and decor of this property is truly enchanting. Very short walk to main street for restaurants and cute shops. I cannot wait to visit again!!

This is the oldest house in Ferndale, as such it has old home charm with attention to detail. Clean, great food, (good job Nicole) close to shopping and near the beach. I would 100% come back.

I've had Shaw House Inn on my radar for quite some time, and when I suddenly had enough days off, I booked it the night before and made my way up from Long Beach. The Shaw House Inn is a wonderfully kept gothic-revival Victorian era house that was built by the town of Ferndale's co-founder. I was warmly greeted by Paula, another former San Diegan, who quickly checked me in, gave me a brief tour, and showed me to my room. There were some home baked cookies left in the common area, which I quickly devoured. I stayed in the bright Garden Room, which was the only room in my budget, and it was exactly where I needed to stay. Located on the second floor of the house, it features a balcony overlooking the front of the lush front lawn of the house. The bathroom is next door, and is only accessible to those staying in the Garden Room; it is large and has a clawfoot tub/shower combination plenty of towels, and even bubble bath. The bathroom fan didn't seem to work, so I opted to open the window. Due to COVID, the dining table I had seen in other pictures was removed, but each morning there was coffee, baked goods, fruit, and a fridge stocked with a variety of juices and yogurts. In the afternoon there were different baked goods each day. The dining area also has several tea pots and tea cups and tea trays to use for a relaxing cup of tea, which I took on the porch, either reading or catching up on work listening to the relaxing sounds of the garden fountain. The Shaw House is a short walk to the main street of Ferndale where the Victorian Inn is and other shops and stores. It's also a great in-between location for those interested in exploring Humboldt County. It is an absolute must or anyone looking to stay in Ferndale, it is such an integral piece of the town's history. I highly recommend visiting the town's gothic cemetery which has a gorgeous view of the town from the top of the hill. I may or may not have offered to help run the Inn if Paula ever needed help, I would love to come back!

IMPECABLE AND NEAT! You see this litte, darling place from Main Street and can't really imagine the loving energy it has. Cute impecable rooms, all different, every detail well thought. Yes, it is a very old building and you won't get a super shower or a jet tub but instead you get an old fashioned, neat, private bathroom with an old tub, on the hallway. We slept well, it was quiet and nice. Day and night there is a good selection of teas to drink while you enjoy the living room with soft, relaxing music. Now, let's get to the important part ... your included breakfast! At 7:30 you start with coffee and by 8 you have delicious HOME MADE (today blueberry) muffins, quiche, granola with yougurt, milk, berries, juice. We love it here and look forward to coming back!

We just spent two wonderful nights here. It's the perfect place to stay while in Ferndale!

When unpleasent surprises emerge, Paula has no flexibility or empathy to offer. Not recommending.

Whoa, this place is AMAZING! My wife and I stayed here while hiking the Redwoods and taking a day…read moretrip up to Oregon. This place is beautiful. Upon arrival we were greeted by our innkeeper for the night and a snack plate that included cheese, crackers, dried fruit, nuts, and salmon was ready for us to take up to our room. This snack plate is prepared everyday. The room was very comfortable and we loved the attention to detail. We stayed in the Egret room and we had plenty of space. The bed was comfortable and could slightly hear the sea lions from our room. No t.v. in the room and it was nice to connect with nature and rest. There was an indoor heater in the closet that we turned on to heat up the room and turned off when we slept. The blankets kept us warm at night. One night after staying out at the fire pit to hang out with other guests, we got back to our room to shower and we didn't have hot water. One of the innkeeper's told us sometimes it happens when too many people are showering at once. Not a deal breaker, although I want to share because this is something that I'd want to know. Back to good stuff...their breakfast is delicious every morning. It tastes like it is made with love. There is a trail down to the beach and a fire pit where they have all the ingredients necessary to make smores. The view is spectacular here. Truly one of a kind. We loved our experience here and look forward to coming back.

Definitely pricey, but this was our favorite BnB on our road-trip from Texas…read more We didn't spend a ton of time at the BnB itself but there was a lot we could have done. The beach with the Stellar's sea lines on the rocks (could hear them from the BnB), the attention to small details in the rooms, the sounds of the waves, the great breakfast, walking through the amazing garden; it was really one of our greatest experiences on this trip. The interaction with the hosts was a bit odd though, generally seemed very annoyed most of the time; however we never had any issues getting what we needed or answering questions.

3 stars...... 2.5 isn't an option…read more Overall experience: It ended up being an acceptable time here. There are positives and some negatives that I will explain. Main concerns: * Overpriced for overall stay / experience * Unpleasant, extremely outdated decor; hard to ignore Positives: * Beautiful ocean view * Nice garden * Close to trailheads * Communal fridge filled with cold drinks; breakfast (I know it's a B&B but for this price, in-room coffee would've been nice.) * Very clean rooms * Hosts were kind, pleasant, informative Negatives: * Decor: The first impression was alarming at best. Online photos do leave you with the impression that the decor is dated but it is overwhelming to actually see once there. I had to walk back to the car and process whether I could actually stay here. After looking up availability of neighboring lodging and seeing no options (and considering the loss of money already spent here...), we decided to go inside. Instead of walking in the door, you have to use the old, outdated intercom where you're asked if you have a reservation. After being let in, we were still experiencing a lot of feelings ("creepy" is the word we kept repeating to each other and "Grandma's estate sale".). While the host was polite and informative, the environment / decor was so outdated, it was hard to get past or ignore. I spent half the day working to force myself to not feel uncomfortable here; I should feel good about the stay - not spend considerable vacation time talking myself into not feeling grossed out by it. * Cost of stay: Considering this was the most expensive option in the area, I expected more / better. Besides the overall decor, our bath towels had bleach stains on them. And be sure to bring your own bath supplies. The ones provided that are boasted about on the website.....looks like they bought Dollar store products, stuck old-fashioned-looking labels on and have refilled over and over. I did not feel comfortable using them at all. Summary: * Nice hosts. Great view. That's it. * Would I stay again or recommend to others: Hard no. You think it's obvious to want an ocean view but I'd easily pass on the view for a more comfortable place to stay. We actually left a day early. Could be good if recommendations here and in other reviews are taken and implemented. Relying solely on "the view" isn't cutting it.

I stayed here with my husband and our 2-month-old baby. While we checked out of our room at 11am, it was storming outside, so we took a seat in the lounge to wait out the weather for a short period of time and feed the baby. Within minutes, the innkeeper, Roger, came over to tell us, rather coldly, that "the reservation ended at 11." Despite being fully out of the room and sitting quietly in a shared space (where there was no one else, as the inn wasn't even full), we were asked to leave. His tone was passive-aggressive -- particularly unkind given the circumstances. That was one of a few negative interactions we had with him. In all our travels, we've never experienced such a lack of hospitality -- especially from a place that charges over $300 a night. Most properties are more than accommodating when guests are briefly using common areas after checkout, especially with a baby and during bad weather. After our stay, we noticed some other online reviews describing similarly negative interactions with Roger, scattered among the glowing 5-star ones. Sadly, that interaction left a lasting negative impression. As a result, we won't be returning and can't recommend this BnB to others who value genuine hospitality. It's a real shame, considering the views and location.
