Our merry bunch of eaters all looked like the strangest, most eclectic 'orderers' ever with my wife and sister in law mainly enjoying cake and myself just going for a "light snack" of the ham hock terrine for £4.95. For this price I was expecting a little tiny bite, really not much to it but I was surprised to get a giant plate of ham hock, fresh bread, salads, pasta and loads more. It was so fresh and so tasty too - definitely something I'll go out of my way to have again if I'm up this way (I just won't have lunch plans afterwards too...) Friendly staff and seating for about 15 outdoors - with only 5 mins walk to Buxton train station. A really good spot and a place I'd recommend checking out.

The Orangery is the better of the two, but the Cavendish is definitely a close second. What we liked: the ham and tomato chutney sandwich, the smoked salmon and lemon & chive creme fraiche sandwich, roasted vegetables tart, goat cheese tart, cherry scone (could be warmed up though), lemon and rhubarb posset (so wonderful and refreshing), and the chocolate and raspberry tart. Misses: the egg mayonnaise and cress sandwich (no egg, just mayonnaise really), and the glazed pineapple savarin (too soggy). If you want champagne with your tea, that is an additional GBP 8.5. I had a glass of Prosecco at the Bubbles Bar for only GBP 6 an hour before our afternoon tea reservation, so it's a better value having your bubbles outside! My friend and I both chose lighter teas. I had the Oolong and my friend had the Nilgiri from India. The Nilgiri was the better of the two. Thanks to the hostess for accommodating us half an hour earlier than our original reservation. This gave us more time to enjoy our tea before closing.

However down to the real review. The chef had some pictures of himself with members of royalty so clearly he has cooked for those who would be deemed important...well he has now as I have been in there ;-) They are only open until 3pm but do a good breakfast range, Butler's Full English Breakfast, Butler's 6 item Breakfast, Smoked salmon with scrambled egg on toast or muffin and so the list goes on. The lunch menu includes a signature dish which has pigeon in it, which I was reliably informed tasted exquisite. The rest of the lunch menu BLT's, chicken strips and steak dishes. So dependent upon how hungry you were there was plenty to choose from.They also served alcohol so you could have lunch time tipple if that was your fancy. Whilst it is a small tea room area they clearly did a lot of off site catering from the coming and goings I witnessed for the time I was there. Sandwich platers came and went along with equipment to keep hot food hot. So if you need a caterer who can provide good external services you could do worse than here.

Afternoon tea is just divine with lovely "homemade"-style cakes (all on display on the counter). All are light and fluffy sponge with thick fillings and toppings. Slices are generous. Sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes (+20 mins), salads and soup round out the menu. Beware, this place is quite small (only seven, four-seater tables are inside) and they only take cash payments. We came in at a busy time so there was about a 10 min wait for coffees and 20-30 min wait for food. The Vegan club was absolutely AMAZING! We plumped for scrambled eggs and poached eggs on toast, well presented and freshly cooked, but just a little under-seasoned. It didn't really matter overly though, listening to the radio, in comfortable surroundings, revelling in the fact that we were on holiday, more than made up for it. The menu for the rest of the day was equally tempting with fresh sandwiches, hot meals etc. Pity we never got the chance to return, I'm sure we will in the future.

As we made our way up the stairs, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but was pleasantly surprised by the bright, modern Décor. The menu is welcoming with something for everyone, just remember to leave room for dessert. The drinks menu is great, with hot and cold drinks available, but I can definitely recommend the Tea Latte, or a frappe or ... ah, don't worry there is no wrong choice it's all divine. The staff are really friendly and never make you feel rushed, even when it's busy, which it nearly always is. If you have to wait, I really recommend you do, but if you can't ,don't forget to order a tea latte to take away with you.

The Upstairs Cafe, also has a small shop too, selling gifts, speciality teas and coffees, maps etc., amongst other things. It is quite a popular place in Bakewell though, you might be queueing if you go at midday, especially in the height of summer.
