The coffee shop is owned by the same couple who run the Coffee Place in Kettering and they have stuck with the same winning formula. Compact lunchtime menu with teatime treats. Home made biscuits and cakes make for good eating. The interior is contemporary while maintaining the tradition and history of the building. Everytime we have been there the place is buzzing with a good collection of locals, walkers and business people. First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. The Co-op is a large supermarket on the main road through Castle Donington and has it's own…read morecarpark, which also has a good recycling point. As well as the supermarket there is the adjacent Co-op travelshop and a small cafe. There are toilets on site which a well maintained. The Co-op has been extended in recent years so now as well as the usual grocery items there is small selection of electricals, homewares, toys etc. They also have one corner of the store dedicated to seasonal items. The choice is good and the store clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially the older 'regulars'. There is a kiosk till for tobacco & lottery sales. The prices are very reasonable, especially given it is the only shop of that size in the village and has a somewhat captive audience. If you are a regular shopper it is worth getting a Dividend card for 5% back on all co-op branded items you buy - this is sent out in voucher form twice a year. Being located in Donington close to the track when there are busy events on such as motor racing or the Download Festival the shop becomes very busy. They handle it quite well but even so it puts a strain on their facilities and it's not unusual to find essentials sold old over busy weekends.
