We come here every time we go back home. The pastries are always tasty. While this isn't my favorite bakery, it's worth visiting.

This Bakery has sure enough deteriorated through the years. Once one of the Best NOW one of the worst. Selling old pasteries or desserts is a deal breaker. How could you sell your clients old stale products that you claim are fresh!! Worst pastelito experience of my life and the month old dessert with mold (disgusting). Never again!! Cake: ok but a bit on the salty side. Was told it had creme de vie, but it was actually drenched in rum. Almost got fired for bringing it to the work BDAy party. This is a photo of a cake I paid $75 for. I ordered a professionally decorated cake for my husband's 50th birthday with UM football theme. What I got looks like a 5 year old helped decorate a cake for a grandma that like football. I asked for a football field with Happy Birthday Mark written around the 50 yard line and some green and orange around the edges. At least we got a good laugh out of it. And the kicker was that the cake itself wasn't even that good. So, no, I would strongly recommend not using Gilbert's for a custom cake. read more

I always try to give credit where it's due, but anytime I've had any pastry from Gilbert's they taste stale and old. It almost feels like the pastries aren't made at that actual location and then it's shipped in or brought in. I remember buying a set of cupcakes for my niece they had a little decoration on top when I removed the decoration the chocolate frosting looked older and pale compared to the rest of the cupcake. read more

I was talking to my Miami heartthrob today about how much I miss a good café con leche, a cortadito and my very favorite: the guava pastelito. When you're living completely across the country, where Cubans aren't commonplace, it's a little hard to locate my favorite treats! Growing up, my mom did a lot of shopping at Milam's and with Gilbert's right next door, I always knew she'd come home with pastelitos. Why is everyone hating on this place?! I remember a few years ago this was THE place to get your pastries. The quality is no longer as good, hence my 4 vs 5 stars but it really is not less than 3 stars no matter how you look at it. My reason for coming here are likely the same as everyone else. I was so sad to find out that the Gilbert's on 32nd Avenue and Coral Way is now permanently closed! What's up with that? :( That being said, I came here to get my pastelito de queso y guayaba fix while I'm town a couple of weeks ago, because no matter what, there is not a single Cuban bakery that makes them better. Maybe it's in the way they shape the dough? I also really like their croquetas de bacalao, their pastica sandwiches and their sandwichones. I am reviewing the Gilbert's Bakery that is in the UM Medical Campus. The Cuban coffee is great! Probably the only reason why I would go. The problem here is that they pre-make everything, so by the time you buy something, is tastes stale and old. The Cuban toast has been prepared since the morning - the bread is not fresh, they pack it up in foil and then flatten it. Needless to say, it tastes like an Old Navy flip flop. How can you serve customers that? Lunch - I had a turkey sandwich that was on display for god knows how long. It was awful. Word of advice: Do not pre-make tostadas; the way you are serving them is gross! Do not pre-make lunch sandwiches - if we wanted that, we would go to the 711. You're giving Cuban bakeries a bad name. read more

Haven't been here in years. Stopped by earlier today with Mom. The service was amazing! We were greeted the second we opened the door. Although we took a number, we were being helped almost immediately. Really nice people. 3 stars because they are overpriced and the spinach croquetas I was craving were terrible. I ordered 3 and only ate half of one. They tasted sort of like industrial rancid old oil. I'm not a picky eater. I'll eat anything but I just couldn't even. Had to throw them out. OMG...I don't really wake up early enough to make it here for breakfast but I had lunch there today and it was DELISH and CHEAP. For 8 bucks, I got two mini sandwiches with pimento spread (MY FAVE), three ham croquetas (they've MASTERED the creamy ham filling here), one teensy slice of chocolate cake (uber moist and gooey goodness) and a bottle of water. Talk about affordable. My only complaint? I can't stand it when the staff don't speak English and give YOU 'tude for not speaking Spanish. Yes, before anyone goes crazy on me...I realize it's a Cuban bakery, but still. The lady who was helping me looked at me like I had 10 heads when I didn't know Spanish. Ugh. This five-star review is exclusively for the VEGAN PASTELITO DE CARNE. This is the best I've had in Miami by far, and I tell all my vegan and vegetarian friends to visit Gilbert's for this reason. I was passing by on my way to an appointment and stopped in to Gilbert's on Bird Rd and was hoping to enjoy a cortadito and pastelito. Well the cortadito was good and the lady at the counter was nice, but what a terrible pastelito and croqueta! I still have a terrible after taste and indigestion! Two stars because they make a great cortadito (who would mess up a cortadito?) and of course the pastries look spectacular. However.....You would think the croquetas would be fresh at 8 am...not. The pastelitos are anything but impressive. The tuna sandwich I had was probably days old, and just overall a sad sad tuna sandwich. Also, very overpriced. My wife and I reminisce back when Gilbert's bakery was the shit. (Which wasn't very long ago). I'm regular costumer here and I love to have breakfast, but sometimes the quality of their food changes, is like throwing a coin, one day is amazing and the next day is bad. My favorite thing to get here and the only reason I ever go to Gilbert's is for the meat pastries (cangrejitos) however, it's the luck of the draw whether they'll be good that day or not. You may think otherwise and I am giving my opinion only, but my experience with this bakery has been my biggest disappointment. I tried to point out to them that their chorizo empanadas taste differently at different times. I have eaten very good ones but I have also bought chorizo empanadas that taste horribly. Beware, because if you are treated the way I was treated your money will not be returned even if you return the chorizo empanada 99% whole. I was accused of not eating the chorizo empanada enough to appreciate it and told that all chorizo empanadas were always made the same way. This was the reasoning that was used to deny any type of refund. fortunately, there are many other bakeries that I can patronize. read more

I was there last month to purchase a dessert for a dinner invite and although everything is extremely appealing, this is where that old adage comes to mind "Looks can be deceiving", and they are. Everything looks good but lacks in taste. 1st off, as always you ask what they cakes are made of and their staff NEVER KNOWS, always needs to consult with someone; very annoying. If I'm going to consume such an offensive amount of carbs it better taste amazing. This crap and the burnt coffee they slang deserve an immediate citation for making foolproof fat Cuban finger foods an even more horrific and guilt tinged experience. This was just offensive on all levels, the only thing that wasn't as terrible was their attempt to make some sandwich de miga thing with a glob of cream cheese and oregano on top.
