All Things Aquatic

This is my 1st review on Yelp and I never leave any reviews but I think the owners of All Things…read moreAquatic deserve some redemption from the 1st review they had. I mean, the Yelper gave Petsmart a 5 stars review, that alone says something. All Things Aquatic is not your typical cookie cutter chained box store. They're specialized to deliver quality aquatic livestock and you can see it in their operations if you actually knew the intricacies of the trade and the hobby. Kevin and his wife, Tandy, are the owners of this establishment and I have only praises for their business thus far. Kevin took his passion for the hobby and made it into something more where he can enjoy what he does for a living. He started with only marine livestock when he launched but have since also included freshwater and I'm sure it will continue to grow over time. From my dealings with Kevin, he is reasonable and down to earth. He's just like another hobbyist who wants to sell healthy livestock to his fellow hobbyist. When I visited the store, I didn't notice any dead inhabitants like your typical chain stores or defunct LFS. I didn't notice any sickly looking livestock and saw some areas for QT prior to transition to the main tanks to be sold. Being a hobbyist for over 20 years and having kept a wide array of fresh, brackish, and marine animals; I was happy to find All Things Aquatic. Why are prices higher here for some fishes than a local chain Petsmart or Petco? They're a standalone operation that doesn't have the leverage of big box chains to negotiate pricing with wholesaler and shipping companies. Shipping alone is a major cost factor depending on where your fish is coming from, especially in the Covid era. They have overheads to pay and to maintain the quality of livestock they have, it costs more than just flipping fishes like some stores. I have not been disappointed with my purchases from All Things Aquatic and I have spent several thousands on livestock alone here. You can also put in special request and Kevin will try to find you what you're looking for. You will rarely find a store with so many large tanks and saltwater pools with sharks, etc. up in the Northeast. Overall, the experiences I had is overwhelmingly positive and I can't say the same for many LFS. I have been to hundreds if not more locally and shopped online with all the big retailers to know what a gem All Things Aquatic is. Give them a try and support a local mom and pop store.

All looked stressed, 2 were dead but if I didn't buy them they wre "going in the dumpster" since all the tanks had been emptied. Within a week 9 fish had died. My wife and I are extremely happy that we discovered this place a while back when we started a new saltwater tank (the first of several!) We're pretty much regulars at this point, often visiting this store every week or two. Our kids love it here as well, and they look forward to seeing all the interesting marine life and learning more about the hobby whenever we stop in. John, the owner, came off as a bit standoffish at first but he's actually very friendly and knowledgeable. The store is often quite busy and I get the impression that he deals with a large number of people who come in the shop just to look at interesting fish or "kick the tires." He warmed up after we had been there two or three times and it became obvious we were interested in more than just looking around. He's provided some great insight, has special ordered a few bulbs for me, etc. I think one of the most telling things about Sea Creatures is the fact that there's almost always one or two "fish guys" around. There are numerous avid hobbyists who frequent this location and at least one can generally be found sitting in the store chatting with the owner and customers about their tanks, giving friendly advice, discussing various setups, etc. As far as I know none of these individuals is employed by the shop and they simply choose to hang around out of their love for the hobby. To me, this speaks volumes about the type of place Sea Creatures really is. This isn't a store that was opened just to make a buck like the big box chain stores. In fact, the owner has actually discouraged me from buying things on several occasions (he indicated that I didn't need a few items I had planned to buy and told me it would be a waste of money to purchase them.) This is a place that cares about the animals and the hobbyists equally and actively seeks to promote a friendly learning environment for people of all experience/knowledge levels. I've attached pictures of some of the "sea creatures" in my home that we've gotten here to date! All in all, this is an exceptional place. I anticipate my family and I continuing to be regular customers for a long time to come.

The store really is a testament to how great and dedicated the owner is. He is the kindest most patient teacher for all things fish and will help you learn how to become a successful fish master. He is in the shop ALWAYS, will spend as much time with you as you want and will also leave you alone to browse. Aquatic Treasures is also a fish helpline. I had a beta fish that was very pathetically flopping around on the top of the tank and desperately called here (where I got him) to see if there was anything I could do to save him. He walked me through the steps and I have now had that happy beta for a year since. He also provides a fish kennel for when you go away if you don't have a trustworthy neighbor to feed your fish. If you are looking to start a new tank or get an exciting new fish this is the only place worth going. The prices are great; the quality and variety of fish are spectacular; and you get all the support you could ever want.

I will definitely return tomorrow when I have more time to spend. Having said that, the place has such a messy, disorganized outward appearance, it was nearly impossible to tell --even as I opened the front door-- that the place is still in business! But indeed it IS open for business, and my gut instinct is that this man will be able to help me.
