For such a massive store, you would think they would have a decent produce section. That is not, however, the case. They either don't carry the item I'm looking for, or it's a crap shoot whether or not an item is in stock. Bear in mind that I'm not looking for weird produce. I moved to SS 1 year ago and used to shop at the Giant in Gaithersburg/MD. There is absolutely NO comparison between the stores. The Silver Spring location is terrible at best. Pros - The store is large and open - great location - plenty of parking Cons - it is dirty - produce is often rotten or non existent - shelves are being refilled during prime hours with many customers shopping - staff unfriendly and untrained - deli counter is untidy and slow with no customer service - Pharmacy is unfriendly and unhelpful - checkout is extremely slow and grumpy - shelves are never fully stocked - the return counter prefers to answer their phones before talking to the customer Let's mention that ridiculous sign on the milk cooler door, stating that there is a organic milk shortage and therefore Giant can't supply organic milk. If they do it is 50-70 cents more expensive the Whole Foods, who never has a organic milk shortage. There is NO organic milk shortage - are you kidding me!!! This store has no customer service, prices for food are high, when asked nobody can or wants to help you. During peak hours Giant keeps the same amount of cashiers open which creates long lines. The supervisors don't seem to be bothered by it as they stand around and watch the turmoil. Shopping at this Giant is extremely unpleasant and I am looking for other grocery stores nearby. I guess Giant is too big to want my money and provide a outstanding shopping experience for customers to return. read more

Their order pick up system is a scam. Even if you meet the $30 minimum to order, if you're too close to that threshold, the system glitches and cancels your order. Even worse, if you do meet the minimum, but they happen to be out of one of your items that puts you below the threshold, they cancel your order. Not to mention that they take your money first before checking to see if they can even fulfill your order. Shop elsewhere. read more

I refuse to go here unless absolutely necessary. It's right down the street from me, but it's just that much of a pain to shop here. I suppose the name could tip you off, but Giant is a humongous supermarket as supermarkets go. You'll probably walk about 2 miles just wandering around the store trying to find peanut butter (hint: near the bread, in the back of the store). You'll be inundated with choices on every aisle. Frankly, I'm just never in the mood to choose between 20 different kinds of dishwashing detergent. Things to avoid: Their seafood selection (meat, in general, here, is not up to snuff), being confused by the separate "healthy foods" aisle Things to look for: the automatic scanners that you can use while you shop, baking goods/spices, cheese selection Don't let the superstore front fool you - this store is also not very cheap. Seriously, worst grocery store ever. The counter workers are never there. I wanted to buy fresh fish, and a line of about 4 people was standing around the seafood counter waiting for the guy to show up. He never did after 5 minutes, I got ticked off, and just picked up a packaged fish and moved on. They're always out of ground beef and the check-out lines are never fast. Even if one person is in front of you, it will take at least 10 minutes. I've stood in the check-out of the fast track isle for 15minutes before. I hate it here. It's so worth it to just walk to the Whole Foods near downtown SS. I don't understand why the stupid manager doesn't just put more people on the registers. Problem. Solved. read more

The food quality is low. Produce section is full of bruised fruit and veggies. The meat we bought yesterday was actually rotten on the bottom. We have to return food all of the time. And have in fact quit going to this place. Sad because we live right next door we would rather go across town. We have written letters to the store and have been ignored. I live less than a fifth of a mile from this store, and when I first moved in, I thought, "Great, I can run in to Giant whenever I need something!" Wrong. You do not "run in" to this Giant. Regardless of whether you use self check-out or regular check-out, count on spending 5-10 minutes checking out. There aren't enough check-out lines, and the ones they have are slow (I'd love to see their cashiers get whipped in a race against Trader Joe's'). And the self check-outs are poorly maintained -- I've had them go on the fritz, not print receipts, you name it -- and lacking in help when they break. But what about the food? Well, you can count on anything this store carries that Target also carries being significantly less expensive at Target. Produce section is wimpy, and organic produce is either non-existent, or not clearly labeled. I've had sushi from the seafood section here so bad that much of it went down the garbage disposal. The ONLY thing this store has going for it is location. Whenever possible I go to Trader Joe's instead. read more

The fresh food is always weird. The other day, all the onions on the shelf were rotten. And there were hundreds of them, rotten. Ever since seeing that, I have never been back since. It's a shame because most giants aren't this bad. Even though the prices are comparable to near grocery stores, I rather spend more than what this grocery store offers. I generally don't have a problem at this store. I have been going to this location for a very long time. Yesterday, I wanted to return an item. I reached the store to realize that I did not have all of the things that I needed to return the item. While I was in the process of discovering this, I encountered a man who was upset and on the phone. He seemed to direct his anger at me by threatening me to the person on the phone. I was looking for something. My attention wasn't really on the conflict until I encountered him a second time. He did eventually go away. I avoided him by going into CVS and. waiting. read more

The handheld scanners may well be the coolest thing since sliced bread but you have too many people using them who don't know how and end up taking twice as long in the checkout lines. The check out lines are already long (expect a 5-10 minute wait) if they're working at all (out of paper, can't read my credit card, etc). Unless you're shopping on a Friday afternoon, you can expect to wait in a long line and paying for pricy produce that isn't all that fresh in the first place. For the scanners, please bag as you shop. Other Yelpers have described the process fairly well so I'll leave it up to you to peruse the finer points of scanning your Giant card to get your scanner. But if you're going to use the hand held scanners, please bag your groceries as you scan. There's no point in pre-scanning groceries if you're going to stand at the checkout line and bag each item. Might as well go to the regular check out. So if you're like me and have no social life, say 'hello' as we pass in the produce section on Friday night. read more

Most people think of Giant as a place you shop to save money, but this store is just as expensive as the higher-end Whole Foods down the street. Not only does it cost as much (sometimes more!!) than Whole Foods, the selection and quality are not as great. Which would be totally understandable if it were actual Giant prices. Additionally, once when I was leaving I was having an issue with the self check out. When I explained that the scanner had stopped scanning my items, the clerk gave me a blank stare and total sass, "So.. whats your problem?" like my question had been so stupid he couldn't understand what I said. I think this is an awesome grocery store. I am dinging it one star because as some other reviewers have noted the baggers are a joke- I had 2 huge reusable bags and the guy filled them both 1/3 full and then charged me for a plastic bag. Are you kidding me, man? That said, I find very little to take issue with here. This place is huge, so it can be a bit overwhelming, but on the other hand, you WILL find what you want. Given the size of the store I suppose they could carry more organics as others state, but there is a Whole Foods less than a mile from this place- if you feel so strongly about Organics, pop by there instead for that stuff, like I do. I found the check out lines to move very fast, the staff to be very friendly, and the store, despite its size, to be very well organized. I liked that you could weigh your produce yourself and print a sticker with how much it cost to expedite the check out process later on. Now, regarding parking, I can't comment because I don't do parking-I actually walk here, unlike a lot of people here who ironically complain about this place not having enough organic food and not having a place to park their car in the same breath- so I cannot comment on that area of people's criticisms. However, as a grocery store, I think this place is a whole lot better than people are making it out to be. It is definitely my go-to spot for non-organics in Silver Spring. read more

It's taken me over a year to figure out the configuration of this store. Don't get me wrong, I like it. It has a great location and it's large -- I just don't understand the logic behind how goods are organized here. Let's chalk that up to personal preference. A-OK rating is appropriate for this supermarket, which is well stocked and generally very clean. One note of warning: Do NOT park your car in the parking lot of this store and walk off (like to a nearby apartment building). The business hires low lifes ... THIS STORE FELT DANGEROUS! IT IS AS IF THEY HAVE DECIDED TO NO LONGER HAVE ANY COVID PRECAUTIONS. The carts aren't wiped, and they supply no wipes to so you can wipe it yourself. The store is reorganizing, and there are boxes and people all over so you are forced into a closer contact in this environment. Employees had masks on, but many did not have their noses covered, making the mask useless. No store is perfect, but I won't be back until COVID is no longer a threat. I have shopped here for years- in normal times it is an ok grocery store, with long lines and surly employees, but it is conveniently located and has a good selection. To my regular Giant store: Sorry you had to hear about my cheating this way...but you're kinda dingy and small and you have uninteresting food. Plus, I sometimes see my students when I visit, and that's not fun. And the Giant corporation obviously does not care enough to give you a much-needed clean-up and facelift (after all, you are not in a wealthy, increasingly-white neighborhood!). And, really, I didn't realize how old and crappy you were until I went to the Giant on East-West. Of course I will still visit you, and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for you, but, sorry, I will be thinking of another Giant. Ok, let me be honest here: When I walked into the Giant on East-West, I could have sworn I heard angels singing and harps playing. Or at least something close to that. I really, in all sincerity, did not know that Giants could be nice and beautiful and clean. But this Giant is. It has a huge deli section and a nice produce section, and randomly, a decent-sized British food section. They have PG Tips tea for a reasonable price! Who knew?! I did find the layout a bit confusing--like I was a little suprised at where they had put the peanut butter, but whatever. I couldn't figure out if the prices here were more than my regular Giant, but I guess at least the sale prices are the same. I will never go to this Giant on a regular basis because it's not particularly near my house and the parking lot is annoying to get in and out of, but I am still dreaming of the slow but pleasant checker, the lack of lines, the huge number of checkout lines, the space, and the cleanliness. Not the typical Giant brand experience. This store is best described as the ugly step child of Giants, obviously receiving little to no support from corporate, and surviving through location only. I hope that when The Blairs redevelopment project is finished, they are ousted by a brand/store that cares. Maybe Tower Companies will have the balls to deny them a new lease. However, if you need food, they'll have it. Other reviews are saying that they've been out of 'rice' and 'eggs' that is something I've never run into.. Produce section is okay. A few decent employees but most of the time you are met with glossy eyes. They should have two people working the 10 self-checkout lines. I just moved here and it's really nice to have a grocery store in such close proximity but I avoid it all cost. As others have mentioned, the produce is never fresh, and plus it's been rummaged through violently anyway. It's constantly crowded, and people have no care in world if they don't "want" an item, they will leave anywhere. For example, today I found a package of ground beef that I guess someone decided they didn't need any more placed on the same shelf as the crackers, that's nice. The checkout machines are almost entirely self-service, which causes chaos in its own way. Half the time machines never apply my phone number so I end up paying double the cost. Honestly I'm really surprised that people use this grocery store as their primary grocery, i will only use it for emergency situations but still....at what cost. read more

No one seems to have mentioned food quality at this Giant, so here goes: 1) Moldy oranges: About 6 months ago I was shopping here, and saw a cart near the oranges with a few old, moldy oranges in it. One orange was completely covered in mold. I assume that other grocery stores rotate their produce so that the same oranges aren't always on the bottom of the display, getting old and growing mold. But these oranges had been sitting on the bottom of the display for who knows how long. An employee had been cleaning up the old oranges and had stepped away. I took a few pictures that I just now uploaded to Yelp. 2) Produce on the floor: I have seen employees drop produce on the floor when restocking, pick it up without any cleaning, and then put it on the displays for customers to buy. These are items like apples, grapes, etc. It's not just bananas or oranges that get peeled anyway. 3) Raw chicken juices: Some shelves that hold packages of raw chicken have shelves with dried up chicken juice on them. I assumed this was normal, until I went to another Giant recently and their meat aisle shelves were perfectly clean. Otherwise, this is a normal grocery store. Yes, you will have to wait in line during busy times, and service at the fish counter is slow, but it's nothing too out of the ordinary. They've recently renovated the store and put in more self scanners, but I switched to a different Giant so I don't know if these changes have helped the checkout lines. read more

Steer clear. I have given this Giant multiple tries. After filing a formal complaint on the produce quality in August, the manager insisted that the store had improved. Months later, I finally decided to give it another try. I stopped in last night and was appalled by the sparse displays. It almost looked as if I had missed the news on an impending natural disaster. This, however, was just a quiet Thursday evening. There is no reason the shelves should have been empty. I think this store relies on its convenient location to get customers in the door. However, they could learn a thing or two about quality, friendliness, and consistency. I now travel 20-30 minutes up the road to Wegmans for my groceries and am never disappointed. read more

This Giant is usually pretty crowded, but it has a better selection than many other Giants in the area as well as being conveniently located, so I can understand why. I usually stop here if I've driven my fiancée to work that day and need to pick up a few groceries quick. The registers here are the worst part of the experience. They are placed too close to the aisles, and so the lines quickly become problematic for shoppers. Moreover, I've been here twice now when the self-checkout machines were acting up and causing delays. In addition, there are never enough registers open to handle all the shoppers. Because of the checkout experience, I hesitate to come here for large shopping trips. However, because of its location and substantial selection, it is a solid store if you need a few items and are in the area. read more

I hadn't reviewed this Giant "before" the recent improvements, but I have to say that they have made some changes that make my visits more enjoyable. First, they have removed the flower section - certainly not a place where I ever bought flowers, and they have replaced it with a natural foods section. Its a decent few half asiles with natural and organic foods, and a special frozen food section. Second, there are now cart return spaces in the parking lot! Very useful since getting your cart back to the store seemed to be extremely challenging for many who shopped there - which further limited the parking. Also its easier to return your cart without getting hit by a car or stopping traffic in the busy parking lot. Third, and in my opinion the biggest improvement, is that there are several additional self check out queues. I can't exactly remember how many there were before but there seem to be many 6 more? They have turned a few of the ones that used to have only 1 register into 3 in a row - perfect if you only get a basket full of stuff anyway. Last week I dreaded going at 6:30pm on a Sunday night, prime grocery shopping hours in DTSS, however I was shocked to find that there was NO line. I didn't have to wait for anyone! It wasn't an anomaly either, there were no 10 person deep lines going down the asiles! It was wonderful to be able to make a round trip to the grocery store in under 20 minutes :) I don't shop at Giant that often even though its only a block away, but I will be much more likely to go there for last minute things now that I know it will be a better experience. read more

When I don't feel like driving the four miles down Colesville to Trader Joe's or paying the prices at Whole Foods, I'll opt for this Giant. Thing is, the last three times I've gone, I've come home with rotten fruit or veggies. My fiance filed a complaint on their website and they mailed us two-$5 coupons to Giant -- which was fair. However, it's been three times now. I don't foresee Giant continuously mailing us gift cards. Also, the hummus that is out is always past expiration date. Coupling this with the consistency of rotten fruit and veggies I've been purchasing, it's getting a bit absurd. Having to shop with the worry that what you're buying may be expired or rotten shouldn't be something I have to think about. I I don't agree with the other complaints about the workers appearances or attitudes. I've never been treated rudely by any employee. Meh. Typical grocery store. Seems well stocked, like you would expect, but some things are grouped together stupid. Also, can not figure out coupons. Things say "buy 3 and save $15" and then you get rushed out of the checkout by the next person in line, get home, check the receipt, and "you only saved $3 total"?? Or coupons for free yogurt, but then you get rhe yogurt, get home, and "$1.59"..... so is it their store or their card? This supermarket is just OK. The one good thing is that there are certain items that are cheaper to purchase at Giant than Whole Foods (e.g., water, pancake syrup) and of course Giant has more exciting cereal options that Whole Foods. However I've noticed that the baby spinach from Giant spoils rather quickly as compared to the baby spinach I purchase at whole foods. Also, Giant has better deals on bar soap as compared to the CVS next door. read more

It is a shame that this Giant is so bad. Their meat is brown. Their checkout equipment isn't entirely functional. Their produce is rotten or non-existent. The employees are nice. This is a store management issue. What I can't stand about Giant is the diversity of their quality. The Giant on Old Georgetown Rd in North Bethesda was of similar quality when we used to live near there. On the exact opposite note, the Giant Foods at the corner of Colesville rd and New Hampshire Ave has great produce, good meat, aisles well stocked and a few decent cashiers....just don't let them pack your bags. read more

The Giant at Blair Mill is going through a lot of changes. They are currently revamping most of the inside including adding more self-check out lines, adding a freezer section in the fish department, reorganizing the aisles to make more sense in terms of groups, and adding an in store starbucks. However, I am not totally sure if any of the changes to the actual layout of the store will address the real problems that have been noted at this location, such as, an inattentive staff and poor quality produce. Overall, I think that the Blair Mill Giant offers good deals and decent quality items. Even better, it is quickly metro accessible. read more

The Good: It's very large and nicely remodeled (not as nice as the Safeway on Connecticut Ave. in Kensington, but not bad). The prices are better than I expected. The Bad: The parking lot can get crowded, since it's shared by a CVS, many restaurants and shops, and several large apartment buildings. The Silver Spring Giant is your typical, medium-sized grocery store with a very special feature: the scan-as-you-shop joy-stick like devices that can really expedite a shopping experience! If you're not familiar with this yet (hey, first time I see it!), customers scan their Giant card (or enter the card-associated phone number) at the self-service kiosk and get issued a wireless remote-control-sized scanner and optional grocery bags. People then check out as they go through the store and pay up-front by hitting up one more bar code at the self-checkout station. Positives: much quicker than standing in line! Negatives: occasionally, the scanner fails to read a bar code (sigh) but this can typically be resolved w/o a visit to a checkout clerk. In terms of the rest of the store, it is so-so. The selection is decent for the most part but not the best. Produce can be less than optimal (e.g., wilting greens, apples that spoil in a week) and bananas are either all green or all ripe. All else being equal, I continue checking out my local Giant simply 'cause it's the closest mega-mart and one that is, as of late, technologically ahead of the curve. read more

Still, sometimes I want a good old name brand, or I want to get something quick. Since it's right down the street, I can grab food here really fast. The service here is usually really slow, but self check makes that problem go away! The addition of Starbucks is good and bad. Too tempting! Anyway, the store is huge, but so is the parking lot. I'm glad they've remodeled this Giant. Everything is much brighter, the produce seems better, and they've just added new hand scanner technology to let you purchase while you shop. (Pretty cool) All the same, for downtown Silver Spring this is where you go to get everything Whole Foods doesn't carry. If you really want decent seafood or meat, you're going to go to Whole Foods, but if you want cookies or most any other normal food item Giant is your place. To think of here as anything more is probably foolish. The only downfall is they have the annoying habit of putting HUGE displays both inside and outside the front doors. Now I grant, there's not a whole lot of space to put it otherwise, but it basically makes getting in and out a one way affair. They put a Starbucks at the front of the store with the remodeling as well, which adds to the general chaos sometimes trying to get in. And yes, the parking lot is a mess at times. read more
