Nothing screams Pittsburgh like a trip to Giant Eagle. It has been and always will be one of my absolute favorite locally owned and operated grocery stores. From expertly prepared hot foods, to local favorites throughout the store, Giant Eagle offers Pittsburghers everything they need and more! During my lifetime I witnessed the metamorphosis of Giant Eagle. This particular location in West Mifflin was always homebase. I used to love renting movies and video games from Iggle Video while my mom shopped. The Giant Eagle brand food is always top notch. Very few stores can compare to their in-store brand quality. But when you're looking for name brand goods, Giant Eagle has them all, and for very reasonable prices. For my non-Pittsburgh friends, you may not understand this, but when I need some Sarris candy or Mrs. T's pierogies while I'm visiting my family in Western Pennsylvania, Giant Eagle is the place to land. read more

Today January 14th, 10:30 am, I stopped to pick up some bread. As I approached I saw no one waiting at the counter. There was a lady in the corner behind the shelves of bread taking someone's order. Behind the counter in the back was a tall thin man with gloves on working diligently at something, and two young females in their 20's-30s standing directly in my vision, laughing and joking with each other, carefully not making eye contact with me. I stood there for at least 5-7 minutes until the tall man in the back who at this time was irritated because no one was waiting on me (which probably happened frequently) asked me if I needed help. I said yes, I would like my bread sliced, please. about a minute went by, and no more words were said, the young woman came over to me with contempt ( Like she had been constipated for weeks) on her face, took her time putting on gloves while glaring at me, and minutes later returned with the same look, still giving me the evil staredown.. not speaking. I smiled and thanked her. If looks could kill. She obviously felt she shouldn't have to work while she was there at GE!! The bad attitude and nasty look said it all. I'm not sure what she expected to come out of that.(?) They need to keep her in the back, with someone watching so she actually earns her paycheck. After seeing this, If I were her manager, and If they BOTH didn't start doing their jobs and get a better attitude I would fire them. It was pretty obvious to me they expect others to pick up their slack. I think next time I visit the store for bread I will look for her...:) read more

I like anything that makes it so I don't have to go through the checkout line. Self checkout is good, but scanning and bagging as I shop is decidedly better! I'm so glad they have this technology here now. Whoo Hoo! read more

I have very mixed feelings about this GE. I go once a week for groceries, but may switch stores. It's closest to my house, but presents some problems. Plus: It's a very large Giant Eagle, with lot's of options. The fresh food market is really nice to have as well, with lots of options, and a soup and salad bar. Plus/Negative: They have a curb side service, where they do your shopping for you. This is a great feature, and saves a lot of time. The only thing is, your order is not always correct. Great if you can't make it to the store though. Negative: My complaint is that the produce is NOT fresh. It's like searching for a needle in a haystack, and for somebody who predominately eats fruits and veggies, it's frustrating. If I do find something that doesn't look like it's old, it only lasts a few days. Hope to see fresher food soon! read more

Yesterday evening, I did some grocery shopping at the Giant Eagle by Century III. As i proceeded to place my groceries on the conveyor belt to checkout the cashier had a clueless look on her face. Come to find out the guy in front of me told her to give me his change. I thought that was so kind of him and wish I could've had the chance to thank him before he left the store. Sadly, the cashier was hesitant to give me the cash. She asked surrounding coworkers what she should do. One coworker replied, "just give it to her." Before she handed me the cash she stated, "just make sure you don't buy any drugs with this..." At this point, I had a clueless look on my face. I never can go wrong when I shop here from the bakery, I've been getting stuff from the bakery since it was the smaller store and it has always been what I have asked and with their loving Helping Hands to make sure it's always right for me no matter what they have always pleased me. In general I like Giant Eagle. The down side to this particular location are the employees. Or hopefully just the one I interacted with. I went yesterday to pick up cupcakes for my sons class. I of course had to walk the isles a bit and pick up some odds and ends. Once done browsing I got in a check out lane and waited for my turn. As I waited I observed the cashier rolling her eyes at the person in front of me and being rude. Finally it was my turn and I received the same treatment only after said cashier complained about the pace of the previous person in line and how she couldn't wait to go home. I get it we all have those days but the person in front of me was an elderly lady. I placed all my items on the checkout area. Swiped my card and waited on the cashier. Once she was done scanning my items she looked up at me and gave me a look that said wtf are you doing. A few seconds went by then she said you need to scan your card. Now this wasn't the nice scan your card please. This was scan your card with eye rolling and an infliction that said your an idiot. I informed the cashier that I already entered my card information and the screen said please wait on cashier. Well she huffed and puffed and pushed the wrong button and I had to enter my card info again. Thankfully she pushed the right button this time and I was able to be on my way. Only to hear her talking about me as I walked away. I've NEVER dealt with someone so rude in a position of customer service in my life. It left such a bad taste in my mouth. I think I'll be avoiding Giant Eagle as long as I can. read more

For Texans: Giant Eagle is like Kroger or HEB. For Buffalo-nians: It's what I imagine a Wegmans would have been 15 years ago. BEER: For those who are new to the PA (like myself), beer, wine, and spirits can only be sold by certain distributors. GE has found a way to sell beer about the same price or higher than a Kroger would in TX. I believe it's because of the hot food "cafe". HOT FOOD: I love Wegmans and strongly believe that it should be national. Their hot food is the best! GE'S hot food is not on par. Our purchases were not fresh at all. It's good when you're in a pinch, for example, you just moved to PA and your stuff won't get here for 4 days after, but I probably won't purchase it anymore after this week. PRODUCE/MEAT: Fresh and we'll stocked. I can't wait to make my first fridge stocking trip! read more

I'll swear, I'm one of the most calm, reasonable people. I know, people who say that are likely the opposite, but I'm tooting my own horn here for once. But, why, why, why do I keep coming here? Almost every time I leave this store telling myself I'm never, ever going to return. But then I do, as if something magically changed from the annoying experience the week prior. Last week it was the inability to find Sabra Hummus and no one could find it for me. The week prior, the on-sale produce was a) moldy or b) not present, as usual, and any nearby employee was clueless. This last time, it was the deli counter. I took my number: 40. It was a weekend. I had a husband and toddler and a cookie from the bakery. So, in reality, I had 10 minutes. There were 3-4 employees behind the counter, and one person--ONE--in front of me (#39). Shortly after I took my number, 3 more people took numbers, waiting for their turn. For some unknown reason, as the deli got busier, all but 1 deli employee disappeared. A 2nd returned, but with a broom, which he used to vigorously sweep the floor while ?intentionally not making eye contact with the growing line. The employee slicing #39's lunch meat did--I swear--a slice a minute. After 15 minutes of no eye contact, no help for that 1 employee, of watching other employees chatting nearby without helping, and the line growing, I put my number in the basket and walked away from the counter. So, adding to the list is now hands-down terrible customer service I watched and experienced. This time, however, I've finally learned my lesson. I'll not be returning. I'm moving my prescriptions to another store, and I'm saying good riddance. I've never stepped into a Shop 'N Save or Aldi's after my 30+ years in Pittsburgh, always sticking with my GE and Get Go, but I think it's time for a change! read more

Not impressed Employees are always talking to other em-loyees when I'm checking out ! Most of the produce doesn't look very good

I use their dry cleaners because there isn't another one near me. They are just OK. (I got back a sweater that wasn't fully pressed and folded incorrectly on the hangar so it was even more wrinkled.) My complaint which really angered me: Went to the dry cleaning counter and there were maybe five people in the lottery line which is separate from the one for the cleaners and customer service issues. I assumed that as soon as the lottery people were done I would be next. In a few minutes there were at least a dozen people there waiting. The poor lady behind the counters was by herself which is poor management. She yelled over she would be with me in a minute which she wasn't but it was not her fault. She was really trying hard and I could see she was flustered. No exaggeration, I was in line at least 15 minutes waiting. Another lady asked an employee to speak to the manager. Obviously the manager was too lazy and doesn't give a hoot about his customers because he doesn't come over, but sends the guy back. He tells her that there is no one else that can do that job. We were furious! If he was a decent manager he would have jumped in to help (assuming that he knows how to do it). They need to have two people available at all times back there and a backup for breaks and lunches. Because of the lack of another local cleaners, I'm stuck with this one. I dread it. Back to the very nice lady behind the counter... I told her what a good job she was doing under the circumstances and that in no way was it her fault. I think I made her feel better! read more

I've been to many different Giant eagle locations. But this was the worst and my last straw. I went 7pm at night, not very busy but whyyyy did it take 20 mins for me to checkout. I refuse to use the self service since they never work so I waited. The old lady decides to have a little social hour with another lady who moved slower than a snail and was the reason I left a different line because they sent her for a price check. Yes it took her 15 minutes then saw her walk back and check the magazines. Anyway the lady Literally handed me my receipt without looking because she was too busy gossiping with Karen that I had to basically reach over to grab it. Looks like I'm going to shop n save. They have rewards programs new too. I don't care how old you are do the job they pay you to do and gossip after your line is down. Or learn to multitask. read more

For health reasons I'm on a very low sodium diet and after researching I found that Silver Star has several low sodium hams available at Giant Eagle. I decided on one and called this Giant Eagle to see if they stocked it. I had to be insistent that they give me the amount of sodium per serving along with the OZ per serving on the lowest sodium ham they stocked. At first they said they could not do so and that their ham was simply "low sodium". I understand this is a busy season for them and they are harried but I needed that information to make an informed decision and before driving there. I had to go on to explain I could not purchase a ham if I didn't know exactly "what I was buying". At that point they did provide me with the information I needed to make a purchase but when I asked if I could then place an order for it I was informed that I could not, I'd have to come in and see if one was on stock and that they "got hams in everyday ". I feel I could have received better customer service . read more
