I was surprised by Gianna's. If you visit Untermeyer Gardens, you should also hit this place up. This is a classy Italian spot that won't break the bank. I am from NYC , so everything here seems like a steal! They also have a unique drink menu with several house cocktails you won't find elsewhere. The service is excellent. They start you off with bread and butter, keep your water glass full, and actually check in on you throughout the meal. For food, they've got all the classics: pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches, and more. I chose the chicken scarpariello - tangy, delicious, and had some heat to it. It is loaded with chicken, sausage, and peppers, and you get to choose your side. I chose the penne pasta, which they bring out separately and give you plenty of. Overall, 5 stars. Came here after visiting Untermyer Gardens around 4pm. The restaurant looked fancy with white tablecloths, and there was a sign saying jackets are required--I assumed that was for dinner service, but I asked just in case since we were all in T-shirts and leisurewear. The staff reassured us that we were fine, and despite our casual attire, the service was absolutely top-notch. They were incredibly attentive--filling our water glasses frequently and clearing empty plates right away. Without us even asking, they brought my son a plastic cup with water and a straw, which was such a thoughtful touch. I was starving, so I really appreciated how quickly the food came out, starting with a basket of bread and garlicy olives. We ordered the calamari (coated in cornmeal, which even my bread-loving 2-year-old ate--win!), Margherita pizza, and penne alla vodka. Way too much food for two adults and a toddler, but everything was delicious. Food gets a solid 4 stars, but the exceptional service bumps this experience up to 5. It really made an impression. Came to Gianna's today for Friday night dinner without a reservation and did not have any issues getting seated. There is a pretty sizable parking lot for the plaza it's in so getting parking was not hard at all. The restaurant was very spacious, and our waiter was very nice. The menu is has many different categories and we got a pizza, a pasta dish and a chicken dish, and a side. Everything was pretty good, the pizza was very thin, one of the thinnest I've ever had actually, quite unique. My clam sauce pasta was pretty pleasant, side was good. The chicken dish was sort of a stir fry with chicken pieces, peppers, potatoes, and sausage. Everything was decent and they had many drink options, we got the muscato, which was very delicious. However, the main course took a very long time to come out, much longer than expected. Overall, nothing stood out as extraordinary, but a nice local Italian place with a nice vibe. read more

I am shocked to report that this place is as good- if not better- than Johnny's, which is one of my all time favorite pizzas. I went twice to confirm before deciding to review. The plain pie is very reminiscent of Johnny's and as good in my opinion. The margherita is pretty perfect too and has real tomatoes. My gf had the linguini with clams and loves that along with real whole clams it has an extremely generous amount diced clams. I was uncertain about which of three entrees to choose from, all of which looked delicious. The waitress recommended the Parpedalle pasta with short ribs sauce. I was well rewarded for the choice!! In town for work and everyone that I have spoken with tells me it's great. Well, I was not disappointed. I came on a quiet, slow night which allowed me to relax and take it in. I started with the Burrata which is a favorite of mine. A generous size ball of burrata with tomatoes, basil, roasted peppers. The balsamic was a little heavy but soft. This has become our "place to go" over the past few months. Well prepared and generously plated food, welcoming atmosphere, friendly and respectful service and a well stocked bar, all contributed to that conclusion. Recently I discovered the Codfish Marechiara dish. Similar to the Zuppa Di Pesce but without the pasta. Lots of shell fish on Tom of a chunk of cod fish, in a red sauce. Delicious! The Honey likes the Chicken Marsala - generously flavored with the Marsala wine (as you'd expect). And there is always the dessert, to top off a good dinner. We're definitely coming back. read more

All around a really nice restaurant. I won't go as far as to say "traditional Italian" but their marinara sauce was extremely good! I had the risotto and tuna. Risotto was spot on, flavorful, and cooked elegantly. The tuna unfortunately was overcooked and tough. The flavors were still there though and I ate it without complaining because we were starving after a long day of traveling from west to east coast. Service was excellent, ambiance was nice but it is loud because it's so busy. It's busy because it's good though and that's what you'd expect! Okay so Friday and I'm wondering what to feed the wife and kids. I immediately thought of this place for pizza. But not your avg pizza, the thin sliced crunchy type. So I ordered pickup. Guy on the phone was accommodating and nice enough while placing my orders. I ordered a large pie (8 slices btw) which, in retrospect, is not enough to feed two kids 12 and under & my wife and I. I'll come back to this later. I also ordered a broccoli rab and cheese calzone. I was raving about this after it entered my mouth. Also ordered a regular salad (good portions) w/ creamy balsamic - delish! All this came to 33$ and some change. Seems like a decent price - the only issue is that the large pizza is more like a medium sized pizza. I was disappointed with this. Cmon make a large pizza a freakin LRGE PIZZA! It really doesn't take that much more dough. And since this restaurant doesn't go heavy with mozzarella, (not a huge deal breaker) they can afford to make the large pie more like 11-12 slices w/o breaking the bank. Other than that major complaint, the broccoli Rab calzone was AMAZING! And the salad was fresh a good size and the balsamic, creamy as hell, was very tasty! Great experience at Gianna's! I lived in this neighborhood for years and have been here once. My party and I decided last minute to go to this restaurant and try it out again! And WOW! What a great restaurant. The food was incredible: we ordered the calamari, burrata, ceasar salad and chicken broccoli rabe dish. Our server, Nicole, was so friendly and very attentive to our table. She refilled our drinks without asking and gave us the time and space to enjoy our dinner. This place has a great local Italian neighborhood restaurant vibe and was notably clean (including the bathroom). Will be more frequent costumers. read more

My friends and I were so glad to have found this restaurant looking for a place to meet and eat at before going to Untermyer Gardens. The ambiance was nice and wait staff were attentive. Most importantly, everything we ordered was so good! All of us got the Pasta e Fagiole (the pasta was perfectly al dente and it was a large bowl), I got the individual margarita pizza, and the others ordered caesar salad and Orecchiette (the dish was huge and pasta perfectly al dente). This is a very fine Italian restaurant. For dinner I ordered eggplant with a side salad and steamed vegetables. I really enjoyed the flavor, taste, and portion size of the egg plant. It was enough to easily feed two people. The salad too was very generously sized and filled with fresh lettuce, cucumbers, olives and tomatoes. I recommend the Margherita pizza $14, Caesar salad $9, burrata $14, clams $14, chicken martini $21, lobster ravioli $25, and creme brûlée. I would not get the arugula salad as it is very plain with no dressing-just arugula, some onions and tomatoes. All meals have large portions & the staff are very friendly. We threw our son's high school graduation party in the private room here at Gianna's and everything went perfectly. We arrived 15 minutes early and even though there was a party that ended right before our reservation, the staff had the room all set up for our party. We had 32 guests and there was plenty of room. The food was amazing and the family style servings were very generous. The Hot Antipasto platters were a HUGE hit with our guests. We selected the Chicken Martini and Sole Francese as our main entree options with the Penne Ala Vodka as the pasta course. We've never had a bad meal at Gianna's and they continued to live up to our expectation. Service was incredible from the staff. Dietary substitutions were made upon request even if there was not advanced notice, which we were very thankful for. And to cap off the meal, the assorted desserts were delicious. We had a cake brought in but the guests preferred the Gianna's desserts. I was so happy with our experience and will definitely consider them for a party again. read more

Talk about a place that doesn't look like much. This place is in a little plaza off the main road and if you aren't looking you would miss it. That being said, I am glad I checked Yelp because this place is a hidden gem. They have everything you would expect from an italian place. The normal italian heavy hitters... pizza, chicken parm, salads, etc. I saw a thing called an eggplant roll on the menu. Now I have heard pepperoni rolls or sausage rolls but never eggplant. I hsd to try and what I found is that it was the best eggplant roll I ever had. Amazing even if I never had one before. I would order that one instead of a pepperoni one any day. What I also enjoyed was the tomato sauce that came with it. The flavor of the tomato sauce was top quality. Unfortunately, the beet/goat cheese/arugula salad was ok. It is a simple dish but hard to be executed perfectly. My coworker ordered the salmon ($19) and liked it. It was a small portion but still good. It comes with a side of pasta so that helped but overall it didn't look like much. This is a happening place for lunch so it seems like the locals know about it. The bar area was separated from the dining room and was filled up. The server was great too. Nice guy. I would definitely come back here and recommend. Next time I want to try the chicken parm! Had an terrible experience with their delivery person and their pizza. I ordered just one pizza and it was delivered cold. I have never gotten a pizza cold ever. So when I called to complain, since we live just around the corner, he gave a lame excuse but delivered another one which was worse than the first. The delivery man who came back wanted the first pizza back but I said I threw it away he got angry and started yelling and cursing at me. Never in my life have I encountered a delivery person yelling at me when I am the customer who was inconvenienced waiting for food that should be prepared correctly and professionally. I called the establishment back but they couldn't care less of my ordeal. He said the manager would get back to me, but I am still waiting. I returned it and told the waiter . He came back and asked do you want it less cooked, I replied yes. He returned with a raw uncooked steak browned on the outside. To me that was a downright slap in the face. I then asked for the manager , showed her the steak, she took it and went to the kitchen. She came back to the table and said: "We have a new chef, he is transitioning and mistakes happen". Really. That was not a mistake. I don't eat Italian food often, but I came here for my coworker's graduation. I ordered the chicken Scarpaiello, pointing at it on the menu when ordering. A few minutes later, I received pasta fagioli. I looked at my bowl and thought to myself, "does the chicken come later?" And my friend added "maybe the chicken is at the bottom." Needless to say, the chicken was nowhere to be found. I informed our waiter, who was very kind and understanding, and he offered to take the bowl back and swap out the order.
