My experience with Dr. Giangrasso and his staff has always been incredible, but most recently, they saved me before a trip abroad, so I wanted to shout them out. They've been warm and welcoming since my first visit 2 years ago, they're kind during every visit, they do great work, they're transparent when I have questions, and most recently Dr. Joe took time while on his vacation to help me with an emergency. I was in town for a couple days before traveling to Spain and when I needed urgent assistance, despite being OOO, he was there to help me before my trip. I'm so grateful to him and the team. Highly recommend! Also a great location on Hanover St. right off the green & orange lines if you're not a north end resident. read more

Left a voicemail for a new patient appointment for a chipped tooth. Dr. Giangrasso, himself returned my call and got me in the very next day. Since that day I've met most of the staff, hygienists and receptionists. It's amazing, everyone knows your name and makes you feel like family. Always look forward to my dental appointments- did I really just say that? read more

I needed some serious cleaning done over 2 visits -- so serious it required several shots of Novacaine. I panicked, but Dr. Joe was so incredibly kind and patient. He gave me plenty of time to calm down, and then went overboard making sure I was comfortable. At the end of the first visit, I said I wasn't coming back. Dr. Joe & his assistant Megan promised it would be easier next time. Today was the second visit, and Dr Joe had some new strategies for reducing my fear of the Novacaine -- it was so easy & pleasant & not painful!!! I am very grateful! And thanks to Megan for all of her help & support too! read more

Dr Giangrasso Sr is such a wonderful dentist. He has the best upbeat personality and makes sure to explain everything he is doing to keep you at ease and comfortable. Every time I have an appointment he has been very thoughtful and thorough. I'm never a fan of going to the dentist (who is?), but he makes the visits a bit more pleasant by just his caring attitude. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Joe for many years for regular dental care and recently started the Invisalign program to straighten my teeth. Everything was explained clearly and simply. After 18 weeks, my teeth are now straight! Dental floss no longer breaks, and I can clear food out from between my teeth. My teeth look great! Dr. Joe was kind to clean my teeth when the attachments came off and they look whiter too! I am planning to wear the retainers but, if needed, I would do this again! I want my teeth to work well for me for many years to come. read more

I have been coming to Dr G for approximately 20 years and I absolutely love them and their staff! They are very attentive and all around great dentists and hygienists. I have recommended dozens of friends and co-workers to their office who have all had the same great experience. If I can say that I love my dentist, you know they're good! read more

I love this office, the staff is always really friendly and the father/son team of dentists always takes the time to talk to you about any concerns and learn your name to boot. I'd never change now that I've found these guys! read more

I've been going to this dentist office for at least six years - I picked it based on its proximity to my office . . . as well as its proximity to Mike's or Modern Pastries . . . If I manage to leave my appointment with no cavities, I can reward myself with a North End treat. (I've never actually had a cavity, so I can always equate a dentist appointment with a cannoli. Makes one want to go the dentist). Now, I've never had any real dental work, so my only real experience with the dentist is the biannual cleanings (which, given my coffee habit is a little more aggressive than need be) - but the staff has always been prompt, friendly and professional. In one of my first appointments, Dr. Giangrasso (the son) did ask me if I was interested in teeth whitening (after ranking my teeth on a scale as a 2, in a 1 to 15 ranking [1 being the best]) - I think I snapped at him for recommending something purely cosmetic when this should be a health care facility (I am opposed to the American dentist way of attempting to enforce a uniform, perfectly straight gleaming white smile in every individual. We lose the beauty in uniqueness). Since then, I haven't heard a peep about this. Nor has anyone pushed any other service on me, where other dentists have (Like braces. I have a slight overbite). It's the way the dentist should be - they remind you of your appointment, you sit in a chair, they give you a hard time for not flossing, clean your teeth, give you x-rays, the dentists comes in and checks you out, you schedule your next six month appointment and then you go across the street and get pistachio cookies. And then repeat. read more

Does anyone ever really enjoy going to the dentist? (You sugar-phobic freaks with no cavities don't count.) I certainly don't. Dr. Giangrasso Sr. is my current dentist, chosen primarily because of the proximity of his office to my former address in the North End. While I wouldn't say the office experience at Dr. Giangrasso's establishment makes a visit to the dentist a pleasurable one, the friendliness of his staff certainly makes what would otherwise be an f-ing nightmare a somewhat bearable experience. As you can see I went with 4 stars, but for awhile I wavered on the fence between 3 and 4 because while I experienced no significant problems at Dr. Giangrasso's office, my experience with him as a dentist is actually quite limited. His technicians/hygienists/whatever they're called actually do all the manual labor. So this 4 actually applies to them. Dawn, specifically, was great. She's very friendly and chatty and puts you at ease as she's messing around in your mouth. Dr. Giangrasso comes in at the end, takes a look around, and occasionally delivers bad news. That has been the extent of my exposure to him. Anyway, the staff at Dr. Giangrasso's office is spectacular. Very friendly, very professional. None of that what the hell do you want, why are you bothering me? attitude you often get with admins at doctors' offices. read more

I've had a horrendous experience both times I've visited this establishment. Older Dr. G is so nice but younger Dr. G you can tell he is out to sell you to make money on unnecessary treatments. After never had a problem with my teeth/gums my whole 26 years of life the second I get to Dr. G's office I all of a sudden have receding gums and need a deep cleaning ($$ and so painful) on 2 sides of my mouth.Younger G even went so far to tell me that " eventually I will lose my teeth if I don't do something about it". If you want a traumatic, unpleasant experience where they talk down to you like you're stupid then Dr. Giangrasso's office is for you. I will never return back to this place. read more

NEGATIVE STARS I found the entire experience to be traumatic, demeaning, and hostile. My hygienist was very nice, the doctor seemed nice, but none of that matters after the negligence displayed by this office and the hostility I encountered when speaking with LUCIA the Office Manager. I have a severe allergy to latex. Having had a lot of bad experiences with dental and doctors offices because of negligence and habitual use of latex gloves, I ALWAYS make every effort to make my allergy known so that I am not exposed once again. If you do not know, latex is a cumulative allergy, meaning every time you are exposed you become MORE SENSITIVE so the next reaction will be much worse. Knowing this, I take great effort to protect myself from being exposed again. Here's what happened. 1. I made the appointment and let the person on the phone know I had a latex allergy prior to my visit 2. I filled out the new patient paperwork and indicated clearly I have a latex allergy. 3. When I entered the exam room I specifically asked the hygienist if there was any latex in the room. She told me there was no latex in the room. (This was a lie.) She took xrays and cleaned my teeth using vinyl gloves. She reminded the dentist that I had a latex allergy. He poked around my mouth and I could feel lips start to tingle and swell. I asked him if he used latex gloves and he said he did. I immediately (about 1 min after) took the 3 Benadryl I had and started icing my lip to control the swelling. The staff was apologetic meanwhile I was in immense pain, scared I may have to go to the ER, and panicking as I am hoping the Benadryl would be enough to counteract the reaction. Later the dentist called my cell to apologize again which I appreciated, yet continued to blame the hygienist for his error, although I was present when she reminded him. I ran out of the office with an icepack on my face back to my apartment. By the time I got home, about 5 min as I live next door, both lips had swollen to about 3x their normal size and I was starting to have an asthma attack. Benadryl has a intense sedative effect so I spent the next 7-8 hours sleeping, my entire day lost due to negligence and inattention to detail. The staff said they had an epipen on site when I discovered he used latex, but I can tell you the experience of stabbing yourself and encountering an unhealthy amount of adrenaline (what is in an epipen) is JUST as painful and traumatic as the reaction itself, so I take Benadryl in every case that I can. If I had not realized the dentist used latex when I did, I no doubt would have had to go to the ER. I called this morning to file an official complaint with the Office Manager, LUICA. I know a lot of offices do not understand the severity of latex allergies and I hoped by filing a complaint my case might help educate them about handling this in the future. It's as simple as removing the gloves from the room upon specific request by a patient/client like I had asked. While speaking with her I was continuously interrupted, my experiences dismissed by saying "I don't know what you want me to do, it was human error," and after explaining I do not want anything but to tell her that when I specifically ask latex to be removed from an exam room because of the severity of my allergy, I would hope I can expect not to be lied to. Because the gloves were still in the room, because the doctor made an error, I experienced a great deal of physical and emotional trauma. And LUCIA's response was, "if you have such a severe allergy, maybe you shouldn't be going to a dentist. You need a sterile hospital environment." There was no apology, nothing but placing blame onto me for having entered the office and that because dentists are human I should just shrug off what could have been anaphylactic shock, and laugh because that's what humans do is make errors and how dare I not understand that. Her suggestion to me was that I shouldn't go to dentist offices any more. Just....incredible. I have had great experiences with Dentists before and KNOW how easy it is to remove a box of gloves from a room after a patient specifically requests it due to a severe, and life threatening allergy. ALL of this could have been prevented by doing one simple task....but according to LUCIA it is not protocol therefore not their responsibility and I should have just stayed home or gone to a hospital instead. This woman's handling of this situation is reprehensible and embarrassing for the entire office. read more

Giangrasso Dental - My face after being exposed to latex although clearly stating MANY times I had a latex allergy. This followed by an asthma attack.... - General Dentistry Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

I have been going to Dr. Giangrasso for more than 15 years. I've had lots of procedures over the years - root canals, crowns, fillings, etc. I HATE novocaine but somehow Dr. G manages to administer it quickly and with minimal pain. Everyone here is kind, friendly, helpful and pleasant. I always feel like they have my best interests at heart. read more

My husband had a painful experience and refused to go the dentist for 2 years. We were referred to Dr. G senior by our primary care doctor. The office is pleasant and Dr. G is careful to make sure no procedue is painful. My husband now never misses an appointment. read more

I would have to agree with Alexandra. I went there on account it is close to my work. Everyone there is very pleasant but within the last year, I started feeling like the hygienist and the dentist were always looking for something. I always needed to have some other thing done like replacement of crowns and the like. So one of the last times I was there the doc tells me I need something else and that it is super important and will cost me $$$. I never did anything about it and when I went for my next cleaning no one mentioned anything about this absolutlely necessary procedure I needed 6 months prior. I even asked if everything looked good and he said yes. Then he did mention something different than the last thing he tried to sell me. I am switching dentists now to say the least. read more

I have been going to Giangrasso Dental for about four years now and would never think of changing my dental care. Both Dr. Joe and Dr. G. are amazing doctors and very knowledgeable in their field. All the dental hygienists/assistants are super friendly and gentle enough that I don't hate going back every six months. I love the front office staff. They are always very accommodating and make every effort to get my visits approved through my insurance and the least possible cost to me as a patient. They have a great location, right in the North End. I love that I can just pop over at lunch and get my dental needs met. I can't say enough good things about this office. Once you go there you will never change dental offices again! :) read more

I've been going to Dr. G.'s office for over 15 years. These guys are great! It's a family office and they always make you feel welcome. They run on time which makes getting back to work easy. I usually see Dawn or Amanda for my cleanings and Dr. Joe does my exams. They are all so nice and make a terrific team. The cleanings are always very thorough and they take time to explain everything to me. When I need crowns or fillings done, they go over the whole process so it's clear. The front desk even works with my insurance to help pay for some of the work. If you need a dentist downtown, call them! read more

Dr. Joe and his mother Lucia are verbally abusive to their staff members. Dr. Joe is unreasonable and emotionally unstable. The way he talks to his staff is upsetting to me. He is no longer my dentist as I will not support anyone who treats his employees with such disrespect. read more

I have had VERY few cavities in my life. Once I started going to Dr. G I have had to go back for "small cavities" after almost EVERY cleaning. Then I told them I was leaving and "magically" I have 2 other cavities they were "watching" I went to get one filled and in that appointment they tried to get me to have the other one filled before I left them. They also said the the current one they were filling was so small I didn't need novocaine, as a result I made the appointment during my work day. They GAVE ME novocaine! Then after I said I'm not going to have Dr. G fill it he said to me, "Okay, if you just keep brushing you will probably never have to have it filled" What the heck! I am 100% convinced that he is just trying to get $$$ out of me. Absolutely absurd and I feel taken advantage of! I DO NOT recommend going here!!!! I wish I could give negative stars. Awful! read more

I was referred to this office by co-workers when I moved to Boston. It would be fair to note that I personally know someone who still goes to this dentist and has no complaints... However, my experience/opinion is different and I feel compelled to share: *The office is small, dark, and outdated. *I found procedures there to be unnecessarily painful and did not feel the dentist was sensitive to my feelings or experience. *I went there for several years and there never seemed to be an end to the work he recommended. *I once made the mistake of mentioning that I was self-conscious about the appearance of my front teeth and he spoke to me about veneers. When I said I was not ready for that kind of financial commitment, he made a comment about me asking my parents to help me out. I am a professional woman in my 30s. *I always had a lingering bad feeling about this dentist, but I convinced myself that I was the one with an issue as I have always been a bit fearful of going. After an unusually bad experience there, I vowed never to go back. *I have been going to a new dentist for 2 years now and I cannot begin to say how much better it has been. The only work he has done in that time (other than routine cleanings, etc...) is to fix two of the crowns that Giangrasso put in! Long story short, I wish I has switched dentists a long time ago and would never recommend this office. read more

I have been going to this dentist for about 3 yrs. My 1st visit was fantastic. The one who cleaned my teeth was thorough but gentle. Unfortunately I learned he was a student and he left shortly after. Since then I had the permanent staff. I have always felt rushed out ever since. I could tell she didn't even floss all my teeth on one visit. I usually walk in and out in about 20 min. The staff has even told me that the office is all about getting as many appts as possible to make money. Very dissappointing. read more

I recently had my first crown, and my dental insurance company (what an oxymoron) reflexively refused to cover the expense. Dr. Joe and his administrator Lucia went to bat for me as vocal advocates, having me come back in for more detailed photos with a high-tech camera to give the insurance company visual confirmation that the work was necessary, and also making sure that I got the maximum amount covered. Dr. Joe and Tsui, the dentist's assistant, were patient and kind and helped me get through what for me was a terrifying experience. I'm grateful for the attention and support I got from all the staff, and highly recommend this dental provider and his staff. read more

Everyone here is very friendly, and more importantly, good at their jobs. I've had a number of cleanings and several cavities filled here, and the procedures are always relatively quick and not painful. Let me start off by saying I am absolutely terrified of going to the dentist. I rarely go, which is why this past summer I was in need of an emergency visit. A friend suggested Dr. G and I am so glad she did. The staff is amazing. They were all very friendly and professional, from the office staff to the hygienists. I got an appointment right away with no hassle. Sadly, I came in petrified and in tears. They calmed me down as much as they could, given my crazy phobia. Honestly, Dr. G is the first dentist I've allowed to touch my teeth in over 10 years. He and his staff are very gentle and patient. While I can't say I'll ever be excited to go to the dentist, I know I'm in good hand here. I absolutely recommend this place. read more

Unnecessary work was done. I also ended up paying more out of pocket than the insurance company because of how they filed, and they made changes to my notes before sending them to my next dentist - leaving off important allergy (latex) and medical information that could seriously affect my treatment. Good thing my new dentist actually pays attention. Would not reccommend. read more

I agree completely with Alexandra's post. I've been going there for a few years and began to feel increasingly uncomfortable with the service provided. The staff are friendly but every other visit I was told work needed to be done. I had no previous history of dental issues. Moreover, the dentist never offered any care plan or suggestions for changes in my home care to avoid future problems. The same as Alexandra, I thought I was just being unreasonable but I had a sneaking feeling that work was being done that I did not really need. Finally, I learned that two co-workers left his practice for similar reasons. One co-worker had a problem with a filling performed by Dr. Giangrasso, Jr. It was ongoing. Finally Dr. Giangrasso, Jr. recommended a root canal. My friend sought a second opinion where she was told that she absolutely did not need a root canal. Her problem was fixed by correcting her bite and a root canal should never have been considered. I've decided to change dentists. read more
