One of the coolest shops I've ever been in period…read more Herbie's was one of the stops on a gourmet food tour I got to go on in June of 2010. I could have bought everything in the shop! The place is owned by someone who many people claim to be the spice guru of Sydney, Ian Hemphill (nickname Herbie). He's written a few cookbooks and was quite the authority. The shops website is a great resource for all things spices and I believe you can order online from there as well. And if you get really into herbs and spices, Herbie takes tourists to India for a spice tour from time to time! Although the store is tiny, they have a wide selection and they carry quite a few things you're not likely to find in a regular super market (plus the quality is much better). They sell spice kits to get you started and these kits would be perfect gifts for the beginner cook. They sells mills, trivets and mortar and pestles too! PS. I recently started paying more attention to herbs and spices as a result of Ayurveda and I'm willing to bet Herbies could provide many of the things I take daily to balance my body.

Why bother with those packets of spices you can buy at the supermarket, when you can buy a packet…read moreor two of quality cumin and paprika spices (for some yummy soups I make the family when I am in Sydney); and it is just fun to walk in and pick and choose from the different array of spices available. It is clever how they have a leash stand and a water bottle for those dog owners to put their dogs outside with a sign which says "customer barking." It is just extremely clever. When you come into this establishment; feel welcome and buy a few packets of some quality spice and use it in your culinary delights; you will begin to understand why they are the choice for spices in the MasterChef kitchen. Just love the flavours; they are real and authentic, and they make any high quality (yet even a simple dish) taste so delicious and bursting with flavour: we are talking about real, authentic flavour here. Great spices available here to give any cook that much needed leverage and enjoyment, especially when cooking can get somewhat mundane. Needs to be visited and seen to be appreciated and enjoyed. Love those herbs and spices.

Either show discipline and turn up with $10 in coins and pretend you're enjoying a slightly inflated re-inaction of your visit to the corner shop as a kid OR take the credit card and buy a three figured amount of calorific nostalgia and promise yourself you won't eat it all in a week. If you're a fish crisp connoisseur then this is the place for you: Walkers Prawn Cocktail, Skips or Scampi Fries (which actually smell like Gents toilets but taste great!). You can buy online too!

THIS PLACE HAS MOVED!!!! It is now located at Level 1, Piccadilly Arcade, 210 Pitt Street Sydney…read more Setting foot inside this place is like the fabric of space and time have folded and you have been transported home to any local shop in the UK or Ireland. Screw your markets and bazaars with their aromas of herbs and spices, nothing awakens the senses like the playful crinkle of a monster munch packet or the shine in your eye when the sun catches off the packaging of a Capri Sun (The only place I have found in Australia that stocks them FYI). Expect a friendly greeting from the Welsh lady who's on the counter and get lost in the selection of stuff you'd forgotten you'd missed. Apart from Taste Ireland, which I have also reviewed there is nowhere that I have come across that has as much selection as these guys. While it is mostly sweets and confectionery there is a huge selection of grocery items available too. You name it they pretty much have it. from washing up liquids, to powders, sauces, stuffing, cordials, soft drinks and football merchandise as well. The selection is absolutely massive. if you're missing home and some of your favorite grub pop in and see these guys. It'll be money and time well spent. If you can't make it into the city, they do online ordering too.
