It was a cold day and my fiancé and I ducked into the deli just to get out of the weather. Then I saw the chocolates, cheeses, wines, sweet and savory pastries and we decided to get a cup of coffee and browse. They have a nice variety of selected deli items that make you want to have a dinner party. The quality of their gourmet food items is impressive. It's a fairly small deli, but they have a great selection. From their specialty wines and craft beers to the handmade chocolates and pastries. The sausage roll was especially good (I don't know if it was the cold weather, but the pastry was fresh and tasty. Sitting outside by the heater eating a sausage roll and drinking a cup of coffee watching the people walk by was an absolutely unexpected joy). This is probably the best specially food store on Macleay Street.

Like 'Nice' biscuits? I disgress. The Cheese Shop in Mosman sells all the delicious English imports that you might hope for plus some of their snooty European counterparts - think Roquefort, Emmental, Gruyere, Blue - if you like mould then this is your place. Now, whilst it's possible that what they sell here you could buy in a decent Providore, there's something about this charming little shop with its cobbled together feel that is very appealing. You can walk out of here with your cheese, crackers, chutney and coffee and be a very happy customer. They do a Jamie Oliver sandwich for $5 which is cheese, pickled onions and crisps. So very wrong. So very right.

I saw the sign for this shop and thought - awesome, a cheese shop! I also thought of the image of…read morethe cheese shops you find in Europe - the Borough Market and Covent Garden ones in London come to mind first. They are filled to the brim with huge round lumps of fresh cheese of all kinds. Mmmm cheeeeeese. Unfortunately the Cheese and Coffee Bar in Mosman isn't quite the cheese delight I was hoping for. It has a pretty modest selection of cheeses but then it's not the sole focus of the shop is it? Being a coffee bar too takes some of the focus of the smelly yellow stuff... sort of. The café part is quite small. There's a wee library of books to choose from if you fancy a quiet read and a selection of sandwiches and cheese platters if you're a little rumbly in the tummy. Simple and sweet enough but don't expect a traditional cheese shop.

Enter via…read morethe old post office building, head down the stairs and you will find your cheese wonderland. Once inside the cheese room, to the left is a cheese counter and the rest of the room is filled with bottles of wine. This could be considered heaven for some and probably is. There is a nicely set dining room to the right, where you can enjoy your selections in sophisticated comfort. The staff are very attentive, filling your water glass and providing great service. The GPO cheese room has a large selection of wine from many regions around the world, much like their cheese offerings. We browsed the menu trying to decide what to order, a difficult task considering everything they have to offer. Do we pick a couple of different types of cheese, burgers, antipasto, a cheese and wine flight or a main? Nope, we spot that they have fondue on the menu, something you do not come across too often in Sydney. This is something that appeals to my Swiss roots. We select a nice glass of pinot and sip away, in anticipation for the brie coulommiers and truffle fondue to arrive. The fondue hits the table, the flame is lit and the cheese melts, turning into a bowl of liquid goodness. The fondue set was very impressive, consisting of a large platter containing a selection of cured meat, potatoes, bread, crackers, pickled figs and grilled garlic prawns. The fondue forks were kept busy as we were selecting items to pass through that decadent mix of cheese and truffle, transforming each item into a mass flavour infusion. At $56 between two, it is great value. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the GPO cheese room, set up in the historic post office building at the bottom of Martin Place. With a great selection of cheese and wine at a good price, this place is now on our radar and one we recomnend you add to your list.

Most people of the vaguely foodie persuasion will be familiar with the name Simon Johnson as their produce is now stocked in many high-end deli sort of stores all over Australia.
