Maloney's Grocer deserves a mention for the simple fact that it stocks the most delicious chocolate in the world. Conscious Chocolate's Raw Cacao with 60% cacao, naturally sweetened with agave nectar, is raw, organic, handmade and vegan, with low GI, no soy, no added sugar and gluten free. So basically, it's chocolate that is not only delicious, but that is good for you - or so I'm able to convince myself. Maloney's grocer is such a gorgeous food market, although it is very, very expensive. The fruit and veg look fake they're so perfect, so expect to pay for the aesthetic. You could walk up the road to Woolies and get the same amount of groceries for a considerably less cash. However, Woolies does not have the selection of gourmet goods that Maloney's have. I am a chocolate fiend and they have this thick, dark chocolate covered dried fruit. The orange is my favourite. They are crispy and the most delicious treat I have ever had! I haven't seen them anywhere else and they can make great gifts too. There's a fantastic selection of muesli's and bread for all needs. Their cheeses and dips are pretty special also. It's great to get a few unique item's here and then do the rest of your weekly shop up at the supermarket. read more

This place reminds me of that mysterious bazaar in Morocco where that one eyed gypsy man sold me the monkey claw that granted me 5 wishes. Much like the mysterious bazaar this place has a mysterious knack for anticipating what weird food I am missing from around the world or I am looking to hunt down in Australia and having it there within the next few visits. No joke, oddly specific items and it's even a thing with my girlfriend and I now that when I get a weird craving we joke "Maloney's will have it or get it soon" and the scary part is, it nearly always happens. If my life was the TV show LOST, this place would be the Island. They stock stuff from all around the world, not just dry good but like breads and meats and tons of dairy. So a small supermarket with foreign food, big deal yeah? Well there's more, they have a spot on fruit and veggie section. Excellent prepacked meat section and an absolutely kick ass lunch Deli. If you're into bacon they are one of the only places I know that does Bok's bacon if you don't know about Boks, you do now. Get on that asap. When I lived in the area and my girlfriend was away I quite often hit up their pre-made dinners which were sen-friggin-sational and not that expensive considering how good they were. Like a hug in a micro wave container. Considering it's a small local place the prices are pretty good and at times better, the only difference is no cheaper home brand option basically. A smashing little oasis tucked away in Surry Hills but practical enough for your day to day shopping too. It's seriously worth checking out if you're in the area. A place with obscure food I like, a good deli, great bacon/meat & I can't cook for myself meals. 4 of my wishes from the monkey claw! This shop is the materialisation of what a neighbourhood business should be like. And I am not saying this lightly. They open at 6 am. But they actually open. As in: they are setting up the shop for the day and all, and everything isn't available - like the daily-fresh items, but the cash register is on and you can walk in. They close at 10 pm, so any late work night meal, post late training meal, is possible, and they even discount the fresh stuff. I go everyday or almost. Being (partly) human, I forget my wallet every now and then. They let me take my stuff and I just pay the next time. They have so much stuff available: organic or not, vegan or not, raw vegan or not, fresh fruits, super fresh local stuff like Blue Mountains mulberries, cheese, pastries, fresh juice, name it and you got it. Damn, THEY EVEN SELL DUCK FAT!!!!!! (Which means they save you doctor bills and contribute to lowering Medicare costs, and your taxes). .... Ok they don't, but even I don't mind that. Seriously. This is my favourite grocery store in Surry Hills. 1. Fabulous and friendly staff - love everyone that works here. 2. Great value - despite looking like a fancy shmancy grocery store, the prices are actually cheaper than Woolies. 3. Variety - they often have the random ingredients I need that you won't find at the bigger shops...lot's of International goods and a great variety of sauces! 4. Quality Produce 5. This is a random one - but AC, yes - this store, although it's open air and there aren't any doors...the AC is always BLASTING in here. When we first moved to Sydney and were sweating our faces off walking around Surry looking at apartments...Maloneys was our safe and welcomingly chilly haven. Nuff said. read more

Maloneys Grocery is located next to the Clock Hotel on Crown Street. They have a large range of on-the-go meals here like salads, fruit salads and pastas, a selection of pre-packaged deli goods like cheeses and cold meats, packaged gourmet goods and breads, fresh fruit and veggies as well as a barbecue chicken and roast veggie area at the back of the store. What I like best about here though and the reason I shop here on the odd occasion is because they also stock the best fairy floss ever, Pariya, that comes in flavours like pistachio, chocolate, orange blossom, rose, saffron and vanilla. Maloney's is a bit more fancy than you're normal grocery store, but this is Surry Hills so this is just one of three gourmet grocery stores you can shop at in the area. read more

Mmmmm I love Maloneys. For a small grocer on Crown Street, they seem to always have that specialty ingredient I am searching for. In addition, their tubs of snacks are remarkable. From bar mix, to Asian snack mix, to pistachios, to fruit infused trail mix - they have it all. Opposite the snack wall are all the premade salads and chopped produce for take away. Their combination plate of tabolli and lentil salad is an absolute hit. And while you're indulging in feeling healthy, choose from their large selection of bottled juices, like the non-pasteurized Preshafruit in Pink Lady Apple. Finish your take away lunch with a mini bar of gourmet chocolate at the register, for which I am certain the cashier will supply a recommendation. Not bad for a one-stop little shop. read more

Nicely does it. I eased into my shopping experience here. Checking out the salad ailse first. I was actually really impressed, there were a range of lentil and cous cous salads available. There were also pieces of cut fruit and fruit salad available, all for about $5-$6. I ended up buying an apple and rhubarb yoghurt crumble it was delicious. Very creamy indeed. the range of fruit looked fantastic, and you may be paying a little more than at coles, but I think it's worth it. I like to support small business. The range of pies and pastrys at the back of the store, looked absolutely sublime and I swear I had to really hold myself back. the canoli was the best I've ever seen and the almond croissant I know I wouldn't have been disappointed. Anyway next time I shall go when i'm not on a diet. But I would highly reccommend grabbing a basket and doing your weekly veg shop at Maloney's. read more

As other reviewers have mentioned some of the items are pricey (fruit and veg), but actually alot of their stuff is as cheap or cheaper than the bigger supermarket chainstores. Maloneys Grocery store on Crown Street in SUrry Hills is a nice place to grab your daily and weekly house hold supplies and it pretty much has everything you need. Good fruit and veg, meats, breads, a good deli section and some great fresh pasta that you can cook up at home. If you'd rather have someone else do the cooking for you, there's an array of sandwiches, pies, quiches and pastas to take away. It's probably a touch more expensive than your mainstream supermarkets but it has a nice local feel to it and you'll be happy you spent the extra couple of bucks. read more

Great prepacked salads, yoghurts, pizzas, family pies, ready to cook meals such as pastas, soups etc. Good selection of teas, biscuits, soy milk, ice cream (they even have New Zealand Natural tubs!), and nice quiches and deli wraps. However lack of bread options, and some basics you will just have to go to a supermarket instead. Fruit and veges can be hit or miss so pick well and be careful when you buy the soft cheeses - we bought a full roll of double brie for a ridiculous amount of money, was before the expiry date, got home and opened it to discover a strong metallic smell (cheese was off) so it was obciously left out of the cooler or something and just put back to sell. Am hoping this is a one off as generally the grocer is pretty handy and pretty good. read more
