One of the coolest shops I've ever been in period…read more Herbie's was one of the stops on a gourmet food tour I got to go on in June of 2010. I could have bought everything in the shop! The place is owned by someone who many people claim to be the spice guru of Sydney, Ian Hemphill (nickname Herbie). He's written a few cookbooks and was quite the authority. The shops website is a great resource for all things spices and I believe you can order online from there as well. And if you get really into herbs and spices, Herbie takes tourists to India for a spice tour from time to time! Although the store is tiny, they have a wide selection and they carry quite a few things you're not likely to find in a regular super market (plus the quality is much better). They sell spice kits to get you started and these kits would be perfect gifts for the beginner cook. They sells mills, trivets and mortar and pestles too! PS. I recently started paying more attention to herbs and spices as a result of Ayurveda and I'm willing to bet Herbies could provide many of the things I take daily to balance my body.

It is clever how they have a leash stand and a water bottle for those dog owners to put their dogs outside with a sign which says "customer barking." It is just extremely clever. When you come into this establishment; feel welcome and buy a few packets of some quality spice and use it in your culinary delights; you will begin to understand why they are the choice for spices in the MasterChef kitchen. Just love the flavours; they are real and authentic, and they make any high quality (yet even a simple dish) taste so delicious and bursting with flavour: we are talking about real, authentic flavour here. Great spices available here to give any cook that much needed leverage and enjoyment, especially when cooking can get somewhat mundane. Needs to be visited and seen to be appreciated and enjoyed. Love those herbs and spices.

***WARNING WARNING WARNING*** Don't dare ever provide feedback that isn't 100% positive for this…read moreplace. If you do, then read below my experience with them. Hardly a professional response by any means. I was at no point rude or inaccurate to them. This is a true account of my experience. My initial review to their website..... "We bought fresh oysters from George's Fruit Barn for the second time yesterday for today, Australia Day. The first time, they were delicious, but this time, they were bland and sickening to eat, as they had clearly been washed with fresh water, not sea/salt water. They were awful. Given that I bought these from George's Fruit Barn, then I am providing this as feedback in the hope that they will question their supplier about this. I won't be purchasing them anymore from George's, not after this, which is disappointing. You pay enough for oysters and to have them unnecessarily ruined like this was such a costly disappointment". Their response..... Thank you Noni for your 1 star review! What a shame you didn't give us a chance to at least refund you or gave us a ring about your disappointment. So quick for you to get into the computer and slapped us with a 1 star review! What about that "first time" you said they were delicious? That deserves a 5 star right! So if I have to total your disappointment, I think we should at least get a 2.5 Star???? hehehe. BTW, there were a lot of customers today were also disappointed NOT just you! you know what? Because WE SOLD OUT ON OYSTERS!!! Kidding aside, your feedback is very important to us and we will be passing this to our supplier. Happy Straya Day! Oi! Oi! Oi! My comment...... I responded accordingly to their thoroughly nasty passive/aggressive and hostile response. To let rip with what they REALLY think of me, to then only try and soften their hate session with their BS "all jokes aside, thank you for your etc etc....." doesn't cut the mustard, not after what they said to me. Who was joking‍!!!? I certainly wasn't; and they certainly were not either, clearly not, after spewing their bile. I was not rude to them in my initial feedback, I simply stated the facts of the matter. If they can't handle feedback because they're too sensitve, then they need to remove the feedback option from their website, not jump down someone's throat because they dared to give some justified negative feedback due to the substandard oysters. I was clear to state the previous positive experience with the surprising negative experience in my feedback. I was fair and balanced in my feedback. For them to pathetically pass their response off as a joke with the "he he he's" while driving the insult in further, is insulting to my intelligence and only makes them look worse. Oh, and they should count themselves lucky that they ran out of the oysters on the day, as they would have received more complaints if they didn't! I will NEVER go back to their flyblown shop after their hostile reply.

This little store is actually huge and more than a fruit/veggie stand. It's full of hard to find…read moretreats especially for the gluten free. There's a huge selection of quality chocolates and locally made biscuits. The staff is friendly and warm. It's worth a stop for a nice picnic pickup before heading to the beach. Only downside was a lot of the fresh produce was overpriced compared to large chain stores.
