What impressed me when we first met was his referring to tuning pianos the old school way (tuning fork and his own ear), which differs from using an electronic tuner. He uses both, but for those who do not know or understand, the old method requires the tuner to use his ear primarily, and listen for overtones between notes of different registers to get the piano to sound "right" in all registers. It's kinda difficult to explain, but when tuning a piano exclusively with an electronic tuner it actually will not sound all that good. You want your notes and chords to agree with one another when playing chords in different registers which will be slightly different than what a computer tuner tells you to do. We checked Amazon of course, but wanted to hold and feel the instruments before buying them. Music and Arts had them on display at the location right by us (Bridgeton), and we special ordered the colors we wanted. The guy who helped us (Favian? maybe?) just made every part of our purchase wonderful -- like he was thanking us for our decision to take up music. He asked the kind of instruction we were going to use. When we told him YouTube, he complimented us again, and then shared that ukulele lessons are available at Music and Arts - who knew?!? (Clearly, we didn't.) Again, though, things didn't feel salesy - we just felt like we were being welcomed into the world of music. The kicker? We weren't even there for more than 7 minutes!
