I've used MARC for my DC commute for at least 5 years spread out over 20 years. There's a free…read moreparking garage at this location -- great for summertime -- keep your vehicle cool. The conductors are friendly; it's the MARC train so you can buy your breakfast sandwich and coffee in the coffee shop and bring it with you. Or buy your coffee at the nearby gas station. (Rumors are swirling that the gas station is soon to be a Wawa. ) I get a commuting subsidy that covers the entire cost of a month's ticket which is half price due to my senior status. There are a couple of Montgomery County Ride-on buses that have nearby stops. Tip for the return from DC: Not all the doors open up to let the folks off the train. Look for the portable metal steps -- the conductors usually place them near the doors that open.

Great commuting alternative to the Shady Grove metro station. On the southbound side there is a…read morecovered shed with a metal bench. Most people stand and wait for the train. Nine MARC trains stop here on weekdays, ten on Friday evenings going northbound. There is a brick shelter, built in the 1800s on the northbound side which has a coffee shop and seating inside. Perfect for those cold mornings. There's also an Amtrak ticket kiosk if you need to purchase a one way or round trip ticket. Be careful because you have to cross the tracks to catch Southbound trains to DC. There is the Olde Towne parking garage across Summit Avenue which is easily accessible by a pedestrian bridge. The garage fills up pretty rapidly, if you want covered parking, it's best to arrive before 7:30 am, be careful not to park in spaces reserved for the apartment residents or city employees, you may get towed.

I took the DC metro for the first time this past week and really enjoyed it! Luckily, my dad was…read moreable to drop me off so I didn't have the hassle of paying for parking. On Sunday, my ride only cost me two dollars plus the cost of two dollars for my initial card which is refillable. Apparently you can use some kind of app instead of a card? But I haven't quite figured that out yet. However, there were three available machines to purchase cards and add more time. A worker so I needed help and was great. He got me set to go in just a couple minutes. I made the next train with no problem. I only had to wait about two or three minutes. The only confusion I had on my first visit was how to actually get up to the train. LOL. I could see it above, but couldn't quite figure out how to get there. Well you actually have to go down the steps to then go up after you swiped in. Just a heads up!

If I could leave zero stars, I would. I appreciate the practical uses for metro, especially when it…read moreis raining. Metro had lots of maintenance issues on a weekend I was traveling. I always research trips and I thought I was informed about my travels. The wmata web site was wrong. On Saturday, Twinbrook was the stop I used when the red line was impacted by single tracking and repairs. On Sunday, I started my trip at Twinbrook since that stop was the solution the day before. The glitches switched locations. I learned that Twinbrook wasn't in service (after swiping my card). A nice customer told me about the changes. I left the platform and asked the station employee for help. He was probably having to repeat himself dozens of times during his shift. But I am one customer, hearing the information for the first time. He was frowning, unpleasant and gave confusing instructions. He was also pointing to the wrong exit. When I asked him to clarify where I needed to go, he was rushing me out of the area, telling me to get on a shuttle that would take me downtown. Where? I am fluent in sarcasm but I would not be disrespectful to a customer. Metro employees should be awesome whether I am paying full fare or $2.00. A nice bus driver told me to walk to the other side of the block. She was kind. I walked back into the station. Another Twinbrook metro employee walked me to the area when I explained that his colleague was needing a time out. I had already traveled two hours by car and was wheeling luggage around. Even when I am tired, I am nice. I took the shuttle to Medical Center from Twinbrook. Two opposite experiences in the same day. The employee at Twinbrook needs retraining. The employee at Medical Center needs a raise and a promotion. Kindness matters.
