We needed a complete redo of our old, outdated, ugly basement: complete demolition out to the…read morefoundation and installation of new framing, insulation, walls, stairs, flooring, plumbing, lighting, stairs and more in our nearly 100 year-old-house. Cody (owner of CJC) came highly recommended by a painting contractor we trust so we asked him to come out to have a look, discuss a plan, and provide an estimate. He listened to our needs (focusing on providing a "blank canvas" for new buyers when we sell the house in a few years) and came up with a plan and budget that were spot-on, no "up-selling". Cody is primarily a designer and master carpenter, but he works with a close-knit group of high quality tradespeople, including electricians, plumbers, plasterers, painters, with whom he's worked for years, so you get the complete package when you hire him. He took care of the demolition, installation of new framing and a new floor, then project managed the work while the other folks did their work (there was a LOT of it). After the infrastructure work was done, Cody resumed working in his specialities, making sure that everything that was done previously was done properly. Through the entire process Cody and everyone he brought into the project did the highest quality work and were diligent and courteous at every turn. Having part of your home redone can be a pain in the neck, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed meeting everyone who worked on our basement, most especially Cody. Even our cat got to be good friends with Cody and his crew, going down to observe what was happening and get a few pats. That may sound silly, but I think it's a good indication of just what a decent person Cody is, in addition to being outstanding at his craft. We are contemplating a few more projects on our old house and you can bet that Cody will be the first person we contact.

Ruy Barbosa is high off the charts in professionalism. He was responsive to our questions, and…read moreintuitive about our interests. He communicated with us throughout the project of installing a new Timberteck deck. His crew worked straight on through from start to finish without empty lapses of time. The men are so highly skilled. We continue to be happy with our beautiful deck. Therefore, we asked Ruy to install a Timberteck stair rail at our front doors, which also has withstood the test of time. We'd been concerned that installments like this would compromise the brick, whereby requiring a total rebuild, but a rebuild wasn't necessary. He also advise us on an easy and effective fix to divert water from flowing from the gutter and freezing to ice on those brick steps in winter. Based on the outcome of these projects, and our experience in their progression, we highly recommend this company.

Brutal experience with them back in 2022-2024. They were supposed to build a new rubber roof. It started leaking on 3 separate occasions (which btw was never fully fixed -- we moved on to different contractors who did address the issues). And like I said, it would take months for them to actually come back and attempt to fix anything. Often they'd come by, look at the damage, then I wouldn't hear from them for multiple weeks. Meanwhile, more damage continues to accrue to the walls and ceilings. The internal fixes they applied for the water damage were just patch jobs. They just plastered and painted over. Meanwhile, the insulation behind the wall was soaked and accrued black mold that we had to address later. Also worth pointing out a major blunder at the beginning of the project (see attached videos and pics). They opened up the roof, and left it open for multiple days without doing any work. Well of course a major rainstorm came by (which was on the weather forecast well in advance). Alll that water poured into the house in the middle of the night setting off fire alarms. It was a nightmare to deal with on my end.

He was very accessible, always in contact with us and quick to respond whether we reached out by phone, text, email, etc. His rate was more than fair, and totally transparent for all costs that would be involved. He really helped us plan and basically hand hold and walk us through the entire process from conceptualizing our options, where to buy materials, even color and design recommendations. He gave us an aggressive time window for job completion which was important to us with the Holidays looming; and he nailed it - finishing with time to spare. The work was absolutely meticulous, and the attention to details and small nuances make such a huge difference! He even went around to touch up and improve other details around the area not in the scope of the job; just because he thought it would improve the aesthetic and he takes so much pride in his work. This guy is a real artisan - not a laborer. He genuinely enjoys crafting beautiful work and it shows. Our kitchen came out mint - better than we even expected! In all honesty, he was so good at what he does we would be willing to pay MORE to have him work on our stuff than other contractors. I can't imagine using anyone else going forward. 5 star quality all around.

We had just finished a kitchen remodel in January 2019 (replaced all the cabinets, countertops, and…read morelights), but the floorman we'd contracted with had left us high and dry. We had subfloor and while we could have installed the new laminate floor we had, we'd have done a horrible job at it. Lou Gagne was highly recommended to us by a local business, many of whose employees had used his services. We gave him a call that evening. He came out to see us a couple days later and we discussed what had to be done. Install the laminate floor throughout the kitchen, dining room, and attached hallway, install baseboard everywhere but the kitchen, and install threshold where required. He said it would take two days and gave us a reasonable price. OK, so that's the background. Here's what we got. We got a perfectly installed floor, perfectly installed baseboard, someone who really enjoys his work (he sings to his boom box while on the job!), and he fixed some things that a previous contractor hadn't done right because it bugged him and only took a few minutes. The join between the living and dining rooms is perfect. My wife and I did the living room, and not particularly well. He matched the grout lines in the laminate perfectly. In the kitchen he got the laminate floor so close to the cabinets it looks like the floor goes under the cabinets. His idea of using gray grout was perfect as it matches the grout lines in the floor. These walls in our house are not square, but you'd never know it when you look at the baseboard corners. It didn't matter whether it was an inside or outside corner, in close quarters or not, Lou did it perfectly. He also screwed our subfloor down as it wasn't correctly nailed into the joists during construction in 1986. Can you say "squeak"? Not anymore! Lou also gave us some ideas of how we're going to do the backsplash in our kitchen and behind the stove, which we're going to take him up on as soon as possible. My wife and I trust Lou completely. When he says he can do something, he can really do it. Fair price, great work, and it really gives us pride of ownership in our home again. And at some point, we're going to find a figurine that represents what he can do and how well he does it, even if we need to design it ourselves.

I had a quote from another contractor and he looked at it stating he could do the same for the same price. January came and left and I was told that he was backed up due to the snow storms we had been having and had some emergency roof repairs and was also shoveling roofs as well. I understood. Then the snow melted and the next excuse was the rain was causing him to be delayed because the job he was doing was outside. Fine. I understood. Then came April. My neighbor was here and he came by to get a key and said we are ready to start... I am all yours. Well that was not the case. He only spent a couple hours here and there with the work he needed to do before getting his sub contractors involved. What should have taken a week at the most to demo the wall from the kitchen to the livingroom and the wall to the porch to make it a 4 season extension off the kitchen took 3 weeks to a month. We have a cat and a dog during this and he would work with the doors opened knowing there was a possibility they could get out so I had to crate my dog when I was not home and put the cat in our office with the door shut (the cat meowed so loud the people that lived 2 streets over could hear him). He would smoke outside and throw his cigarette buts on our front lawn, stairs and in the back yard. I would leave for work at 8:45am and he was no where to be seen and would show up between 11am and 2pm and only stay for a couple hours. He told us if he had to he would work weekends and there was a Sunday (June 11th- it was my birthday) where he said he would be at our house in the morning and never showed. My husband texted him and an hour or 2 later he called back and made it feel like we were inconviencing him when he told us he would be at our home to work on our job and never even gave us the courtesy to let us know he wasn't coming at all. When it was time for the sub contractors to come in they were spaced out far apart. They subcontractors that did our floors were amazing but Matt told us we could have access to the upstairs (we live in a raised ranch). That was false, so we had to find someone to take our cat for a couple days, have our daughter sleep over our neighbors and my husband and I had to sleep in the basement on a 3 cushion sectional/lounger (mind you he is 6'2"). There were parts missing when the kitchen cabinets were installed, but rather than working on other aspects of the job (like the siding to the porch) he insisted (almost demanded ) we give him part of the last installment to finish the job. When we refused, he didn't come around because he said he needed to make money and started other jobs. Now mind you , I paid for all the materials, (granite, cabinets, flooring, etc) and gave him the first 2 of 3 installments plus an additional 5,000 for the porch renovation (which i feel we were ripped off). Even after the kitchen cabinets were done we had to pull teeth just to get him to come to finish the siding which he hired subcontractors for. All the subcontractors were great. What I should have done in retrospec, is pay the contractors directly and whatever was left over for the quote of the job should have been given to Matt. I will NOT recommend him or refer him to anyone. If it wasn't for the subcontractors the renovations would still not be done. Unfortuneatly he has given me a bad taste in hiring a a small business in the future and that sucks for those small business owners that have their shit together.
