I originally came to Georgetown because they were recommended to me by a friend whose dog was a patient there. I have been absolutely thrilled with them over the past two years. The staff are incredibly friendly, patient, and competent. The vets themselves, and we've now had appointments with 3/4 of them, are stupendous. In every instance, their level of care and expertise is top-notch and we have never had any issues with anything they've recommended. Furthermore, they are price-conscious and when they recommend a treatment or a procedure I know it's because it's actually necessary .... and not because they're remodeling their kitchens. In one case, they even waived a fee (without me asking!) because they asked me to come back in for a second consultation. Another time my dog needed surgery, and (again without me asking!!) they made sure to clean his teeth while he was anesthetized in order to save me money down the road. My dog and I have now lived in four different states, and seen five different vets. I can truly say that Georgetown is the best of them all. Take your pet there! read more

I brought my cat to this practice after seeing two other veterinarians closer to home because I was hoping to get a more thorough evaluation and some answers. Unfortunately, I deeply regret that decision. My cat was experiencing significant over-grooming and weight loss, and I was concerned that something more serious was going on. Despite her visible weight loss and her hip bones becoming prominent, I was told that she was still a healthy weight and that her symptoms were most likely related to anxiety. I understand that anxiety can contribute to over-grooming and other changes in cats. However, I felt that her physical symptoms were not taken seriously enough, particularly as she continued to lose weight and develop vomiting and watery stools despite medication and food trials. I ultimately sought care from another veterinary practice. Within a week, they referred us to an internal medicine specialist, where my cat received imaging and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We were told she likely had approximately two months to live. I cannot know whether an earlier diagnosis would have changed the outcome, and I am not making that claim. What I can say is that, as her owner, I repeatedly knew that something was wrong, and I wish her concerns had been investigated more thoroughly rather than primarily attributed to anxiety. I was also extremely disappointed by the follow-up afterward. Even after I informed the practice that my cat had a terminal diagnosis and that I did not wish to continue communication with the office, I continued to receive requests regarding her rabies vaccination. The office later told me that they did not have medical records on file that would exclude her from the rabies requirement and that Dr. Stone had reached out to ask what was going on with her. Given the circumstances I had already communicated, receiving routine vaccine-related communication was particularly upsetting. I am sharing this review because I hope other pet owners will advocate strongly for their animals when something doesn't seem right. If your pet is experiencing unexplained weight loss or other significant changes, I would encourage you to seek a thorough evaluation and, if necessary, a second opinion. I am heartbroken by what happened to my cat and disappointed by the care and communication we received from this practice. read more

I have gone to Georgetown for about 10 years and they have been phenomenal! Dr. Stone is the cat whisperer. When my big boy hated going to the vet, she was able to give me resources and tools so that he could go and not feel so agitated. I've had a couple different vets there as well and they've all been wonderful. The vet tech crew has impeccable bedside manner. They are all very kind and welcoming! Even when they're busy, they make the time to ask after how you're doing and how your pets are doing. I would highly recommend using Georgetown if you like quality care and affordable pricing for your fur babies! read more

The mediocre and negative reviews here astonish me. We have been taking our pets to Georgetown since I got my first cat in 1974. (That's over half a century, fi you are counting!) Since then, we have had three dogs and too many cats to count under their care. Every vet at Georgetown over those 50 years has been great. We have never once had any issues with their competence, care, or billing. Their diagnostic acuity has always astonished me. And when a pet has needed specialist care that their vets could not provide, they did not hesitate to tell us so. I have no idea how some customers could find fault with Georgetown Vet. read more

Initially when I began taking my puppy here, they were at least competent and kind. However, over the last year and a half, they have continually ignored my dog's health issues and my concerns. Clearly, this was not the same experience as other reviewers, but this experience was so egregious that I could not let it go unknown. TLDR: I had legitimate concerns about my dog's behavioral and health issues and this practice did very little to help him. I went to a different vet one time and they were able to completely ameliorate his health issues in one visit. Shame on Georgetown Veterinary for either not paying attention or not offering effective treatments. The full picture: I admit my dog is a bit of a nervous wreck, but they offered no help in that regard--I asked for trainer recommendations and they gave me a number to someone who no longer offered training services. I had to find a trainer on my own. Meanwhile, any time I brought him into their practice, they repeatedly told me how nervous he was without making suggestions on how we could help him (i.e. medication for anxiety, training, etc.) What was worse, however, was their response to my dog's apparent allergy symptoms. Since the time I got my dog, he has been incredibly itchy--so much so that he would scratch himself until his fur was falling out and he was bleeding--all around his eyes, his armpits, his belly, and his legs. Initially, they essentially brushed me off and told me that "when" he was itchy, I should just give him a Benadryl. The problem was, he was itchy all of the time, and Benadryl only made him less itchy because it put him to sleep. When he wasn't drowsy from the Benadryl, he was still just as itchy. That's no quality of life. I told them it wasn't working, and they offered me almost no further help--they recommended Zyrtec next, which didn't make him drowsy, but was essentially ineffective. Not once did they suggest we should test him for allergies or do any sort of food allergy trial. Instead, months later when I finally brought my poor scabbed up and bleeding puppy into their office, they told me he probably had seborrheic dermatitis--their suggested solution? I should bathe him in a $40 medicated shampoo at least once a week. I was already bathing him once every two weeks before this point, but I took their advice. The shampoo and bathing didn't seem to help. I bought a much cheaper anti-seborrheic shampoo on Amazon ($9) and used that on him and bathed him much more frequently than once a week and he did clear up temporarily. However, his symptoms returned repeatedly over the course of the next year, so the bathing was clearly only a partial solution and never once did Georgetown try to investigate the cause of his skin issues beyond diagnosing him with seborrheic dermatitis, which often has underlying causes. Finally, after about a year of following their advice, I decided that their solution was not working and I called to ask if they offered allergy testing. They of course don't, which explains why they never even suggested getting my dog allergy tested--they wouldn't make any money off of it and I'd stop buying $40 bottles of shampoo and paying hundreds of dollars in vet visits to try to fix his itching! They gave me another local vet's phone number that does do allergy testing after I asked for it, and I scheduled an appointment. After ONE appointment at the other vet's office, my dog is doing remarkably better. I took him about a month ago, and the vet was immediately concerned about his symptoms and was focused on making him feel better as soon as possible. What a concept. They took a blood sample for environmental allergy testing (and found out he's allergic to FOUR things), gave him a cytopoint injection (an injection given every 4-8 weeks to alleviate allergy symptoms with virtually no side effects, according to the vet and some brief internet research), and started him on a food allergy trial. Within literally two days of the injection, my dog's itchiness decreased so much that it was noticeable. Now, about a month later, he rarely itches at all--certainly no more than an average dog. No more bleeding, no more red, hot spots. I am so happy I left Georgetown and I am so disappointed that it took me so long to do so. Not only did they not appropriately address my dog's health or behavioral issues, they also made me feel like I was crazy for repeatedly bringing up his itchiness and shamed me for his anxiety. The vets I dealt with were nice enough (which is the reason I gave two stars, as opposed to one), but I don't bring my pet to the vet to have a relatively nice conversation--I bring him when there's an issue I need addressed. Shame on Georgetown Veterinary for their failure to even attempt to alleviate my dog's suffering for over a year and a half. read more

I am so knocked out by the docs and staff at GVH ... I am moving two cats to France (and at different times) and had very little knowledge of the process or the time necessary to make all the steps happen. Despite being beyond a time crunch, the GVH staff jumped in and were heroic in getting the visits in and the paperwork processed just in time for the first cat's trip. I'm now in the process of preparing the second cat and am once again finding the docs and staff going above and beyond the call. And I would expect to pay a premium price for all this exceptional service, but I'm not ... it's quite reasonable and even surprisingly low. I can't say enough good things about GVH ... great attitudes, talented staff, caring docs. Easy location, and appointments run on time. Thank you, Georgetown Veterinary Hospital! read more

Dr Peppard at Georgetown Vet in Cville saved our cat who was at deaths door, we went to another vet prior who was extremely incompetent. Our cat received the best care and attention from the vet to the techs that took care of him as he was admitted to their hospital. Dr. Peppard would even call us daily and give us updates on how our car was doing addition to telling me it made a difference to the cat to see us every day even though he was barely responding. This man, and the entire practice and techs and God saved our cat cuddle. We will always be grateful to them and have referred many other pet owners since that time. I would not recommend Georgetown Veterinary Hospital. The medical care is mediocre and like many big medical facilities they don't give your pet individualiced care. You might get a different vet each time and they are extremely expensive and charge for ridiculous items and services. For instance, one vet sent my cat home from surgery in a "recovery shirt." Even the vet tech who checked us out knew it was ridiculous to think that shirt was going to stay on the cat. It was either very poor judgment on the part of the vet or it was just money grubbing. Our cat was out of that shirt before she even was fully out of the cat carrier. Georgetown changed $45 for that shirt and refused to refund the money when we brought it back. That is just one small example of the exorbitant charges. read more

I have been taking my dogs to Georgetown for about 11 years. We see Dr. Fietz. He is very kind and attentive and knowledgeable. A few years back I had to have my beloved little Yorkie euthanized. I was heartbroken, of course. Dr. Fietz was so gentle with him and empathetic towards me. I have had some wonderful vets in the past but his compassion towards both of us still stands out to me. Would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a vet. Today I needed to take one of my dogs in to be looked at. Dr. Fietz was not available today so they offered me an appointment with Dr Handley. She explained what was wrong with Maggie, answered my questions, explained why she needed prescribed meds and was very patient. No problems at all. Office staff and techs politely greet me and talk to my "babies" trying to make them as calm as possible. Has been like this for 11 years. read more

My wife and I recently moved from Charlottesville, VA to southern Texas. We have two pitbull terriers and I find myself searching for a new veterinary hospital to take them in our new home. While searching, I find myself missing Georgetown Veterinary Hospital and felt that I should share my experiences with them and their clinic. First, their building is very smartly designed, with multiple entrances and exits - having two large dogs, this is a Godsend, as their large lobby allows for plenty of space between animals. Having two large dogs, this makes for a better, and much calmer, experience. Additionally, and this may seem like a unique feature and one which is not so obvious for many places, but they have these very convenient loops under the front counter which allow you to easily hook your leash, thus freeing your hands to sign forms and the like. I have not found this simple feature at any other vet I've visited. It's sort of like the hooks under a bar for purses and jackets - you never notice them unless you've used them and then you are disappointed when other bars don't have them. Next, the staff seem to really enjoy their jobs and truly love animals. Again, having two pitbull terriers, the stigma of their breed often lends itself to negativity - you wouldn't know this from the staff's reaction, which always resulted in my dogs being absolutely spoiled with pets and treats. Suffice it to say, my dogs never minded a trip to the vet. Lastly, all of the veterinarians, themselves, were rather pleasant and helpful. I personally preferred Dr. Fietz, just on a personal level, but I have had excellent experiences with Dr. Peppard and Dr. Stone (Dr. Peppard even brought my wife [a urologist resident at the time] into the back to see my dog's bladder stone - which was very interesting for her). Both, Dr. Fietz and Dr. Peppard, always seemed to remember my dogs and the details of our previous visits, which made for a much more intimate relationship (even if it was artificial and they were just reading their previous notes, it felt genuine - I only met Dr. Stone for one visit, so this sentiment was not present to comment on). Now in Texas, I'm finding veterinarian hospitals with random cats walking around a very small lobby, labyrinthian buildings with clutter spilling out into hallways, and unprofessional staff who seem to hate life and who feel they should share their life story with waiting clients. I miss Georgetown Vet Hospital and they certainly earned this review for their years of work and dedication to serving the needs of my pups. If my wife and I ever move back to Charlottesville, we we certainly return to Georgetown Vet Hospital. read more

I LOVE Georgetown vet. If your dog is sick and needs care, they are in tender and loving hands at Georgetown. My two guys had gotten into some grapes from the garbage, which are poisonous and can cause kidney failure in dogs. I was panicked and came into their office crying after they had spent the night at the emergency vet in the dog "ICU." I can't remember the name of the vet tech but as she took my dogs to the back both she and Dr. Stone just really warmly reiterated to me they are going to be fine," which I really needed to hear. And they were. A few weeks later one of my guys had a funky poo which I brought in for a sample, and I'm not even exaggerating when I say thay they called me with the results before I even opened my front door. So yes, I really, really recommend Georgetown vet for compassionate and thorough care! read more

I called Georgetown based on a recommendation and they were able to get me in that day. Everyone was friendly and really helped me keep the cost down for getting medicine for all three of my cats. I've been taking my dog here since he was a puppy and will consider a new vet after this visit. The vet assistant was unenthusiastic. I usually got the same girl who knew my dog by name and was very upbeat and positive, but today was different. This girl communicated poorly and made it seem as though my dog was nothing but a problem and dragged him in the back to unsuccessfully clip his nails and take his temp. She suddenly perked up and started petting my dog only when the vet was in the room to witness which was strange. The vet manager was very nice and did what he could to make the visit better; however there just isn't a way to fix feeling hopeless after a crappy vet visit. read more

I love Georgetown vet! Both Dr. Handley and Dr. Fetiz are great, the techs are always incredibly gentle with the animals, and the receptionists are timely and friendly. Both vets have always been on time or very close to being on time for my appointments and I've never had to wait long to check out either. I was worried moving from D.C. to Charlottesville for law school that my pets' care might be compromised because of the smaller city but I've found the care at Georgetown vet to be very comprable to that of the vet I used and used to work for in D.C. Georgetown vet also has very reasonable prices in my opinion and I've found the doctors to be both knowledgable and incredibly kind. Great vet if you live in the Charlottesville area! read more

This was a first and last visit for me. I had to travel for work and entrusted this VERY WELL REVIEWED veterinary practice with my pet's care. After ten days of being in their kennels, he is malnourished, listless, and in appalling condition/shape. I have no idea how such supposedly good veterinarians could allow this sort of 'care' of an animal. My normally playful and affectionate pet seems more like a weary and under-nourished rescue. As a former veterinary tech, I am beyond disgusted with this clinic as a whole. I really don't care how nice the vets or people are if they can't provide food and shelter properly. This is an exceptional clinic. After moving from another state, I needed to find qualified vets that could work with me and my breeding program. I went through many clinics before finding Georgetown. Both Dr. Peppard and Dr. Hanley have been valuable members of the health of my dogs. They go the distance and then further. The staff is helpful and always cheerful. Over 3 years ago my son brought home a feral cat from a life of horror. She flourished and became the Queen of our house. Sadly, she was found to have a soft tissue untreatable sarcoma. As usual, all the staff treated us with kindness and gave her the quiet dignified departure she deserved. Over the years there have been many pets and many endings like this at Georgetown. We lose a pet. However, the staff at Georgetown repeatedly have to help their patients (who often have become their friends) leave this world. It cannot be easy yet they continue to do it with kindness and respect. So now we are bringing home a six year old male Tabby from the SPCA that no one wants. We know that these folks will welcome him and see to his every need. Great job Georgetown folks!!!! read more

We had our 1 year old rescue dog spayed by Dr. Fietz a while ago. Right after surgery, it looked like the wound had been pulled together with large stitches and very rough seams, even gaping open in certain parts. I have to add that this was not our first dog that had been spayed by a vet. Dr. Fietz assured us it would heal fine since she is so young. As it turned out, it took a long time for the wound to heal and she has a thick and hideous scar left from the surgery. With our other dogs, who were spayed by other vets, you can't even see the scars anymore! With this dog, the scar tissue is very thin and keeps getting irritated and inflamed. And that is the reason why I write the review kind of belatedly. It's because our new vet pointed out what a terrible job Dr. Fietz did with the stiches! read more

I begrudgingly took my dogs here for a few years until finally realizing the core issue. The front desk staff. They were always dismissive and cold. You were a number, not a customer. I also began to notice that all of the women at the front desk all looked the same which made me begin to wonder who the hiring manager of these women were and if she (or he) was just, in fact, essentially hiring her or himself. There was no diversity within the office that I ever saw. There was no genuine interest in your animal. There became literally no incentive to ever take my dogs here. Especially considering the fact that they're more expensive than any other vet in the area but I tried to overlook that because it's close to my house and neither of my dogs ride well. However, my last visit, in good conscience, was my last. I had their paperwork sent over to a much friendlier, inviting, and concerned veterinary office right around the corner. All in all, look elsewhere. These people don't care about your animal, they care about your bill. read more

Our experience was not good at all. We were out of town, had a family member watching our cat. We had just lost our 15yr old Labradoodle the previous month so we were dealing with the emotions of loosing a cherished family pet. So when we got the call that our cat was very ill we returned that night. Our cat was at Greenbrier Veterinary Hospital and they were great. However on Monday morning we had to transfer our sick cat (Kidney failure) to another vet. The staff recommended Georgetown (we were new to Charlottesville). So that morning we transferred him to Georgetown. Upon entering Georgetown Veterinary Hospital you are hit in the face with the heavy animal odor...Wow! I know it's a vet, but after being in several Veterinary clinics over the years, this was very overpowering. As previously mentioned in another review we were "NOT greeted" by the blonde woman at the front desk, she was rude and very stand-offish. We left our cat to be cared for and evaluated. Later that day we were notified that the lab results were even worse. So we decided to have the cat put to sleep. When we came back to Georgetown, we were still not greeted, we were ushered to an exam room and they brought our family cat back in. When we decided to euthanize... the vet was void of any compassion. When I returned to pick up the cremated remains I paid for the services and got a can with ashes. There was a card. Our experience with the loss of our Labradoodle was compassionate and respectful, this was cheap and uncompassionate. Bottom line, not going back and would not recommend! read more

We have been bringing our French Bulldog puppy here since we first brought him home. We have been extremely lucky to find such a great vet. We could not have been happier with Dr. Peppard who always goes above and beyond to make sure our pup is in good hands. Dr. Peppard genuinely cares for the well being of our pup. All of the staff we interacted with over the many visits to this hospital showed as much love to our pet as we do ourselves and that is truly a testament to the type of care we receive when we come here. Do NOT board your animal here! The dogs are left in tiny pet-store style cages all day except for three short outings. The "outings" are just in short, narrow chain link runs, with no privacy from the other barking dogs. The runs are all on concrete, too. Its miserable. If you leave toys or treats for your animal, they probably won't see them until you return. Always ask to take a tour of the facility before boarding your pet. read more

Dr. Peppard misdiagnosed my cat, screwed up his medications more than once, botched his surgery beyond belief. Worst vet ever.

I went there as a new client on the recommendation of a friend. My cat was very ill and I was told by Dr. Hanly that many tests would be necessary. After spending over $700 my cat was not any better. I went to another vet in the area and my cat was diagnosed and treated. And it cost under $100. Georgetown is a rip off. read more
