I was in Racine with my son and his wife. We were across the street volunteering at the Racine Eagles Club. We decided to go across the street for lunch at George's Tavern. Holy cow! The special was a grilled cheese and meatloaf sandwich (with a side of their special pineapple coleslaw) The sand- wich was large was toasted to perfection. It even had pickles on it. It was different and seriously delicious!! My daughter-in-law had the mac 'n cheese with chicken strips. It looked amazing. The portion was so big, she had to take half of it home. The salads are huge and one of those will be my next choice. This bar as been around for years. (the owners retired) There is live music often and there are two area with tables, one in the primary bar room and another where the band would be. There are also booths along the back wall. The bar was clean and the new owner, Caleb, was very friendly. I bet people don't think of George's as a lunch or dinner destination, but I highly recommend it. read more

Yes! A lively, fun joint in Racine! A dear friend plays here once a year or so, but I'd pop into this place if I was in the area for sure. Lots of live music, and the joint really does get jumping! It has everything a music venue needs. The area around the stage area is expansive. The other feature, is a bar area off to the side, so if you need a break from loud rock and roll (but who needs a break from that!) to chat with your friends, there it is. Friendly bartenders, great drink specials, nice pours, CLEAN BATHROOMS. They also have delicious Heineken 0.0 if you do not wish to imbibe (as I did not on the night I was there), but still want to look and feel like you're drinking a beer. Try that too! Fun little neighborhood bar, we go to for story telling night. They have a nice bar food menu. We usually get their Chicago Dog and soup of the day. The bartenders are friendly and they have generous pours on their drinks. read more

The new ownership is awesome! I know the cook and was so excited to hear he was going to a new endeavor. The bbq is so good and the burger sliders were top notch. The service we received was very pleasant and professional. The inside still has the same cool throwback George's feel with the stage and the old school look. Best. Sound. Ever. George's books a great band at least once a week. Sometimes hippie/jam bands, sometimes country/bluegrass, even punk. Always great musicians. The sound system is awesome and there's plenty of seating as well as room to dance. The vibe is very welcoming with customers young & old and very few idiots in sight! They've also started an open mic night on Mondays and the talent that shows up is OUTSTANDING. I hear from day customers that the food, especially the soup, is top notch. Comfortable and friendly local bar with tasty food and well made drinks. Was nice to see all bartenders used a jigger when making mixed drinks, which made the drinks consistent. The homemade chili is made very well, thick, chunky and a mild taste, not too spicy. Their sausages and hotdogs are all Klements and grilled nicely. I had the Chicago dog, and all the condiments were fresh and in a soft bun. My girlfriend had a grilled cheese with bacon, and it was grilled well and the bacon was crispy, thick and had good flavor. There is a second room where they have a stage and seating for live bands. The acoustics were good and there were plenty of speakers around both areas so everyone could hear the music just fine. Only downside was the bar ran out of Brandy and bitters right before the second band started playing. This made it impossible for my girlfriend to have another Brandy Old Fashion. We will most likely visit again to try their homemade soups, since they did not have any available on this visit. read more

Georges is a gem in an unexpected place. I learned to appreciate Persian food from a friend about 15 years ago and have sought it out wherever I travel. What a surprise it was for me to see on their Marquis their advertising that they have Persian food! On a day that I had free I took the opportunity in the late afternoon to stop to try their fare. I met the owners, David Popoff and his wife Soosan Fahim-Popoff, who is the chef. Both were very personable and engaging people who enjoy their establishment and their customers. During that visit I had a dish that I have very much come to enjoy, kebab koobideh. It was artfully prepared; a traditional recipe of ground beef and lamb mixed, seasoned and grilled on a metal skewer. It was moist, tender and delicious. Served with onion, steamed tomatoes, and saffron rice, it was a perfect and hearty meal. I have also eaten there when they have set up a Persian buffet. I enjoyed the selections such as ghormeh sabzi (kind of a stew) and Persian salads however the kabob koobideh was the best part. I find the Persian flavor palette to be unique among Middle-Eastern/Mediterranean cuisines. Perhaps it is the sumac that they use - a rare and largely unknown spice in the West. Or perhaps it us the very dear saffron which is used in various dishes. In any case, do yourself a favor and expand your gustatory horizons: go to George's and enjoy the Persian food. read more

I absolutely love the owners they make you feel like you are part of the family eating in their home. Every appetizer and dish I have eaten has been fabulous. It is authentic Persian food made with love of the chef. They also have buffet dinner once a month with 2 seatings and at the late seating they have a belly dancer after. Its a wonderful time had by all. Its a great way to sample all the different dishes that they have to offer. Try the meatballs, and the mushroom chicken (only avail for the buffet), Actually any of the appetizers are delicious. And please have a cup of persian tea. :) read more

Racine's hippie bar happens to be right across the street from a head shop - perfect! To be honest, I never really go here, but that's not a judgement on it, just the facts. I go elsewhere. I like this place when it's dead. On gig nights there, it can be a bit of a clusterfuck. Having the craft bottle fridge out in the room, and not behind the bar is a logistical nightmare. But it's a groovy crowd that tends to drink here, so if ya gotta be elbow to eye socket with a buncha drinkers, you could do much worse. A few taps - Mostly that inconvenient bottle cooler, for me, here. Did I mention that an entrance, and the men's bathroom are between the bar and the aforementioned cooler? Lol read more

My son, daughter, and I have never had Persian food and thought we would try it. We arrived before their 5pm dinner started but they still seated us and the Owner David explained what Persian food was to us. We looked over the menu and he explained what things were. His wife Soosan came to the table and was really helpful. I asked her what I could get with eggplant and she made a suggestion. The waiter, who has only been there three months, was so friendly and very knowledgeable about the food. We received our food and it was so good. My son, who is extremely picky about food, really liked the beef kabob and my daughter had the chicken kabob. Soosan came to the table to make sure we liked the food and if we did not then she would make us a new plate, but it was just amazing food. I have told friends and they are going to go try the food. Great food and great service is what I expect at a restaurant and that is exactly what we received. We will be back to try something different on the menu. read more

I would never believe that some of the very best Persian food in the Midwest is in a small tavern in Racine WI - but it is. I live in Chicago with 5 or more great places - but this one has them all beat, it is more than kabobs, it is carefully prepared (truly homemade tasting) foods, superb service and definably the best value for food i found in the Kenosha Racine area. The lamb shank is my favourite meal here, but I like everything I have ordered so far - highly recommended!! read more

I did not like the buffet style dining on a recent Saturday night. I have enjoyed Persian food many times and unfortunately, did not enjoy it this time. The wine list was a joke and the food was... uneventful. I understand this is Racine (cheap food and lots of it) and the VFW hall look some might find charming, but not for me. The belly dancing was the only thing that saved this visit from being a total waste of our Saturday night. read more

We were at George's tonight with 8 of us. Food was great. All reviews who loved the food were correct. Unfortunately for us, the service was worse than bad. There was only 3 tables of people in the restaurant and we were there 2 1/2 hours trying to get food. We were all there with our kids for an adult night. A good place for live music and if your twenty two. The ledger attended was cool and the bar is much bigger and cleaner than it looked from the outside given its old appearance. The place has been a be for a long time and the remodeled second part of this bar is the newer and more roomy section and where they have music com time to time. My friend and I visited George's Tavern on a whim. Very pleased and delighted we followed our hunch to eat lunch there. We're both foodies and have eaten Persian food in big cities. Never expected to find food matching or surpassing the caliber we're used to in our own back yard. Delightful service, owners. We had appetizers, main course, dessert. No complaints. frankly I actually love this place, I think they actually have really good food and the vibe is usually welcoming. But I recently broke my leg and I can't put weight on it, so I'm on a knee scooter. I came in and had to use the bathroom, so I went straight to the bathroom but when I tried to go to the bar the bartender yelled at me for bringing my scooter into the bar and would not serve me. She also complained that I used the bathroom without getting anything, but my plan was to actually eat their food and have a drink. I usually don't like making complaints, but I feel like there's some sort of violation here? I know I'm not permanently disabled. But the scooter I brought in is strictly for mobility purposes because my leg is broken and I can't put weight on it. I'm pretty angry at this as I do like that bar as I said, and they have good food. But I just feel like something needs to be said about that bartender's behavior. It's not like I chose to break my leg, it happened and I'm having to deal with it the way I can. read more
