Here is what you need to know about thick Asian hair: it does not cooperate. It does not lie flat…read morebecause you asked nicely. It does not taper because some guy with a certificate from a six-week barber program waved clippers in its general direction. It grows outward with a kind of structural defiance, perpendicular to your skull, and it has humiliated more barbers than you'd think possible given that roughly two billion people on earth are walking around with some version of it. You have two options: you find someone who understands the architecture of the problem, or you pay eighty-five dollars at some place in Silver Lake with exposed brick and a cocktail menu and hope that the price tag correlates to competence. Often it does not. Tony at Checkmate Barbershop charges forty dollars. The shop is in Montebello, which means it is not trying to be anything other than a barbershop. No reservations. No app. No hot towel upsell. You walk in, and if Tony's chair is open, you sit in it, and he does the thing that a surprising number of expensive barbers cannot do, which is cut your hair correctly. A one on the sides, tapered up, trim the top -- the kind of straightforward men's cut that sounds simple until you're the person holding the clippers and staring at hair that wants to project horizontally from the fade line like it's staging a protest. Tony navigated it with the quiet precision of someone who has solved this problem a thousand times and doesn't need to narrate the process. The taper was seamless. The top was shaped without being overthought. The cut looked right the day of and -- the real test -- still looked right a week later, which is when most mediocre haircuts reveal themselves for what they are. The shop itself is contemporary and clean, the kind of place where the design suggests someone cares but not so much that you feel like you're being charged for the aesthetic. The music was excellent and omnivorous in a way that told you something about the people running the place: The Specials drifted into Mungo Jerry drifted into something from the mid-eighties, the kind of rotation that makes you want to sit in the chair a little longer even after the cut is done. The vibe is friendly without being performative. Nobody tried to become my best friend. Nobody ignored me either. It was the Goldilocks zone of barbershop social interaction, which if you've ever sat through a forty-five-minute cut with a barber who won't stop talking about crypto, you know is not a trivial thing. Forty dollars. Walk-in. In Montebello. For a precision fade on difficult hair that holds up better than cuts I've paid nearly three times as much for. The math is so simple it's almost embarrassing that it took me this long to find it.

Mario hooked me up with one of the best cuts I've had in a long time. Super professional, easy to…read moretalk to, and skilled with the clippers. The cut came out clean and fresh, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. The shop is clean and a chill vibe. Highly recommend checking him out at Checkmate Barbershop.

Carlos is a great professional, paying attention to details, with a great conversation. Definitely recommend. Easy to book online or over the phone or walk-in. Thank you !

Unfortunately, after today's experience with Jason, I am beyond disappointed, frustrated, and frankly disgusted by the level of unprofessionalism I witnessed. If you're considering booking an appointment here, I strongly recommend choosing anyone other than Jason. I scheduled an appointment for my son at 11:30 AM. We arrived on time, only to find that Jason still had someone in his chair. No problem. I completely understand that appointments run behind sometimes. That's part of life, and I have absolutely no issue being patient. What I do have an issue with is being completely ignored, disrespected, and treated as though my time means absolutely nothing. Not once were we greeted, acknowledged, given an update, or offered even the slightest courtesy of an explanation. We sat there waiting with absolutely no communication whatsoever. By 11:56 AM, nearly 30 minutes after our scheduled appointment, I was ready to walk out. Thankfully, Tommy finally approached us to ask what was going on. I genuinely appreciated that someone at least had the decency to acknowledge our presence. Unfortunately, things only got worse. Around noon, Jason finally decided to acknowledge us, and his behavior was absolutely unacceptable. Rather than offering a simple apology or even a polite greeting, he aggressively yelled, "YOU READY?" at me, as though HE was somehow the one who had been inconvenienced. I was genuinely taken aback. Despite his attitude, I remained respectful and simply asked whether there was anything I could do differently in the future to ensure we could be seen closer to our scheduled appointment time. His response? "Well, we get behind." Again, I explained that I completely understood. All I was asking for was a little common courtesy. A simple acknowledgment. A quick heads-up. Literally ANY communication to let us know what was happening. Apparently, even that was too much to ask. Jason proceeded to raise his voice and become increasingly confrontational. At that point, I attempted to de-escalate the situation by saying, "Hey, it's all good. I appreciate you," because I genuinely wanted to move past the awkward interaction. His response? "It doesn't sound like it." Are you kidding me? I was absolutely stunned. Here I was, a paying customer who had shown up on time, patiently waited over 30 minutes without so much as an acknowledgment, and was now being spoken to disrespectfully for simply asking for basic courtesy. At what point did expecting professionalism and respect become unreasonable? I'm 45 years old, and I can say without hesitation that this was one of the most unprofessional customer service experiences I have ever encountered. And here's what bothered me most: My son was sitting right there witnessing the entire interaction. There was absolutely no chance I was going to allow my son to remain in that chair after being treated that way. Nor was I going to hand over a single cent of my hard-earned money to someone who apparently believes customers should tolerate being yelled at and disrespected. I immediately pulled my son out of the chair, and we walked out. Let me be clear: This review is not about having to wait 30 minutes. I can handle a delay. This is about the complete lack of communication, the unnecessary hostility, and the astonishingly disrespectful attitude we received when I politely asked for a little consideration. What makes this even more disappointing is that I've genuinely loved this place. I've had incredible experiences here, which is why I continued coming back. I don't believe one person's behavior should automatically define an entire business, and I want to acknowledge that Tommy at least made an effort to check on us. But today's experience with Jason was completely unacceptable. Nobody should have to feel uncomfortable, disrespected, or intimidated simply for showing up to an appointment they scheduled in advance. Especially when their child is involved. I walked in expecting a haircut for my son. Instead, I walked out feeling completely disrespected by someone who clearly had no interest in treating us with basic courtesy. Jason, being behind schedule is understandable. Taking your frustration out on a customer who has done absolutely nothing wrong is not. Extremely disappointing, completely unnecessary, and an experience I won't soon forget.
