Ali. That's the review. She needs a 6th star. She exceeds expectations…read more I had the same barber for 20 years before I met Ali. My first barber is like a brother to me, and I couldn't imagine anyone else cutting my hair. When I moved to California, finding that same level of detail and care was almost impossible for the longest, until I discovered Ali at MJ's Barbershop in Alhambra. I walked in, and she was the only one there cutting a client. Hesitant, I waited, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made all year. Ali is exceptional. With over 15 years of experience, she has a vision for detail like no other. It's more than a haircut; it's an experience. From the precision in my beard grooming, the sharpness in the line up, to the relaxing temple massages, every detail is perfect and necessary every time once you've had it. The way this woman gives me my confidence back should be studied. I can't thank her enough. Over the last 6 to 7 months, she's not just become my barber, she's become a true friend of mine. I check in on her whenever I can, and if Ali can't cut my hair, I'll just have to rough it until she can.

And the barber finishing up didn't tell us he was leaving. He was cussing up a storm while my son was there not even being considerate. So there was one worker. The lady that finally ended up cutting my son's hair took her time on the client before us (about an hour). There was no one ahead of me either. We were done in 20 mins. But I've never waited this long for a hair cut. Like it's a barber shop not a beauty salon. She was nice and all but the wait time and poor communication is not cool...unorganized, long wait times, and understaffed. Skipping this place..

Worst Barbershop I have ever been to in life PERIOD. All of the barbers are horrible. The WORST i have seen EVER. You walk in to the place, and you realize oh, this isn't a rockabilly type of barbershop like the logo on the outside of the shop suggests. You start to wonder if this is the right place or not. Because let me tell you, it's not rockabilly whatsover, it's the east la flavor of wannabe hip hop cholos who are losers. The music they play is terrible, they play all of the profanity dirty/cussing music while cutting hair, making it an an unfriendly child experience, it's unfriendly to adults as well. There's a way to do it, where you can put on any kind of music and it still comes out nice and clean, well let me tell you something, THAT'S NOT THE CASE HERE. AT ALL. NEVER BRING YOUR KIDS HERE EVER. NEVER BRING YOURSELF OR ANYONE ELSE THERE FOR THAT MATTER. Everyone in the shop is death staring at you like they would try to hurt you or something if they could, very ghetto like, because for some odd unintelligent reason they don't care. You will get cussed out here for just making conversation with people in line waiting to get their haircut. One of the barbers for no reason at all told a man to "shut the fuck up" and "get out of the store" just because the man had been talking to another person in line. The barbers were VERY VERY RUDE AND INAPPROPRIATE, AND VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. The barber we had who's name is "JOSEPH" kept going to his phone intentionally texting people for no apparent reason. Making us wait longer for my kid brother to get a haircut. He was VERY rude, because "Joseph" after finishing my brother's haircut, intentionally put up my brothers hair in a cholo style haircut afterwords. and told to us to give him the money in a very ugly/rude fashion. Like what are you trying to say here?? Why in the hell would you put a cholo haircut on a 12 year old boy? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?? What are you trying to say? Do you want your customers to be cholos???? The owner of the place was right there the whole time, he was doing someone's hair as well. He did nothing about anything. THE OWNER SEEMS INTIMIDATED BY HIS OWN EMPLOYEES. BAD OWNERSHIP, BAD EMPLOYEES. The owner of the place was doing some transsexual man's hair. And the rest of the people there were thug/cholo/wannabe's. THAT'S THE KIND OF ENVIRONMENT THEY ARE ASKING FOR AND ALLOWING. THIS IS NOT A FRIENDLY PLACE AT ALL. THIS BARBERSHOP HAS THE WORST ENVIRONMENT, AND WORST BARBERS OUT THERE. THIS PLACE SHOULD GO OUT OF BUSINESS, EVERYONE SHOULD GET FIRED IMMEDIATELY. WE ARE NEVER COMING BACK. DO NOT COME TO THIS BARBERSHOP. SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE, AND GET YOUR HAIRCUT SOMEWHERE ELSE. WORST HUMANLY POSSIBLE BARBERSHOP. read more

Here is what you need to know about thick Asian hair: it does not cooperate. It does not lie flat…read morebecause you asked nicely. It does not taper because some guy with a certificate from a six-week barber program waved clippers in its general direction. It grows outward with a kind of structural defiance, perpendicular to your skull, and it has humiliated more barbers than you'd think possible given that roughly two billion people on earth are walking around with some version of it. You have two options: you find someone who understands the architecture of the problem, or you pay eighty-five dollars at some place in Silver Lake with exposed brick and a cocktail menu and hope that the price tag correlates to competence. Often it does not. Tony at Checkmate Barbershop charges forty dollars. The shop is in Montebello, which means it is not trying to be anything other than a barbershop. No reservations. No app. No hot towel upsell. You walk in, and if Tony's chair is open, you sit in it, and he does the thing that a surprising number of expensive barbers cannot do, which is cut your hair correctly. A one on the sides, tapered up, trim the top -- the kind of straightforward men's cut that sounds simple until you're the person holding the clippers and staring at hair that wants to project horizontally from the fade line like it's staging a protest. Tony navigated it with the quiet precision of someone who has solved this problem a thousand times and doesn't need to narrate the process. The taper was seamless. The top was shaped without being overthought. The cut looked right the day of and -- the real test -- still looked right a week later, which is when most mediocre haircuts reveal themselves for what they are. The shop itself is contemporary and clean, the kind of place where the design suggests someone cares but not so much that you feel like you're being charged for the aesthetic. The music was excellent and omnivorous in a way that told you something about the people running the place: The Specials drifted into Mungo Jerry drifted into something from the mid-eighties, the kind of rotation that makes you want to sit in the chair a little longer even after the cut is done. The vibe is friendly without being performative. Nobody tried to become my best friend. Nobody ignored me either. It was the Goldilocks zone of barbershop social interaction, which if you've ever sat through a forty-five-minute cut with a barber who won't stop talking about crypto, you know is not a trivial thing. Forty dollars. Walk-in. In Montebello. For a precision fade on difficult hair that holds up better than cuts I've paid nearly three times as much for. The math is so simple it's almost embarrassing that it took me this long to find it.
