Genkiya Mart is a Japanese convenience store/grocery located in SoHo, I'm glad it's around considering the closures of a few other Japanese markets in Flatiron and East Village in the past several years. That being said, they def lean more into prepared, ready-to-eat and packaged foods of a typical convenience store in Japan, which makes sense for this foot traffic heavy location. They have a pretty decent selection of sushi maki rolls and nigiri, packaged desserts, hot bentos and bowls (pork katsu and gyudon), onigiri and chilled drinks. The produce they carry comes smaller bunches and packaged in plastic, they don't carry fresh meat or dairy though there are some of these items in the frozen section. Snacks, ramen, dry foods and condiments they have plenty of, as well as a small selection of bath/beauty and cute stickers and socks in the back. On this hot and humid day, I stopped in for a drink--grabbed a chilled oolong tea--and will be back to pick up some sushi rolls at some point I'm sure! Great little Japanese mart! I was shopping around the area and stumbled into Genkiya. Right away, I was drawn to the fresh food they had on display! I tried the salmon teri and salmon kewpie mayo onigiri which were absolutely delicious- I went back to buy a second set of them. There was a minimum of $10 on a card charge which may pose a challenge if you're only buying something small but I added on some new japanese candies to try. (Unprofessional staff alert!) Product line up is alright just like other mediocore japanese market with snacks, goods and some grocery. But this place gets 1 star for the employee being rude. We asked a simple question but the employee weren't getting the point but fair enough not the big deal no harms done. But here is the twist. I wanted to check this place out. I got 3 different onigir and a pork katu curry. It's was sadly all underwhelming. One of the onigir was labeled incorrectly and didn't taste good. The other two didn't even have a distinct flavor. You couldn't tell what it was. The pork katus was so salty, borderline inedible. The rice somewhat mushy and overcooked. There was not enough curry to rice and pork. But that doesn't matter because is wasn't very good. No spice or actual seasoning over then salt. If I tasted blindfold, I wouldn't say it was curry of any kind. ( I love curry from all over the world). The container for the katus curry also leaked a bit and the curry spilled into the rice ( even if it didn't there still would have enough curry). I wanted a bag to carry the food home and they didn't have the wide bags for the giant sized bento. Got a small white paper bag. I was stuck holding it upright (the bento box) the bag was useless at this point, considering at the hold it up to the side so the container couldt fit inside. By the time I got home, the back was was damp. And even more useless, and the top of that, my hand was cramped for holding it up so long. The store it self wasn't bad at all. It was small, cute organized; a little bit of everything that you might need. There's only one person at the cash register, and it was a line. They could have at least had an extra person at the register to make things more efficient. Hopefully things improve here. But I'm not sure if I'm going to stop by again. I would have like to have a place for a quick bite, but I did not enjoy the food whatsoever. read more
