My family wanted to grab dinner here, so I came along for the ride. It operates a little differently from other Mongolian barbecues that I have tried. You order your base, (rice, cabbage, or udon noodles). You get a ticket and a small metal bowl. You fill your bowl with the ingredients you want them to cook for you and give the chefs your ticket. Food will be brought to you. I was hoping for a different kind of noodle; not a fan of udon. So, I got white rice. My sister said that the metal bowls had gotten smaller. I was kinda shocked at the size of them. I accepted the challenge. I got plenty of stuff into and on top of that bowl! You are asked to put on gloves and take a tray, as you choose your bowl ingredients. I appreciate that, but there is still going to be cross-contamination. I was pleased at the variety of items that you can add, including pepperoni and different sauces. The sauce station, however, is a little messy. People were spilling stuff trying to pour sauces into the little metal cups provided. Perhaps putting sauces in squirt bottles would be a little easier. I have seen some places that have "recipes" that tell you how much of an ingredient to create a certain profile. Food was cooked pretty quickly. Our waiter was the only one working. He did check on us, but forgot to refill my soda, so he took it off the bill. I appreciated that. I might go back, but there are so many good food places in ABQ that I wouldn't rush back. read more

Seems like it's headed out of business. They'd run out of many sauces and some bases for the bowls, ventilation inadequate, not enough staff (our smiling server was hustling, but falling further and further behind with all she was expected to cover), tape covering giant tears in the vinyl of the booths, and bathroom stalls out of order in one of the filthiest bathrooms I've seen in a while (and we got there at OPENING, so it hadn't been cleaned). The place is clean. Glad for that. The bowl is not that big but it was good. You pick what you want to add to bowl. Lots of choices from cucumber, peppers, steak, shrimp, chicken, etc. Had a good waitress she kept my drink filled. Took a bit for my food to be made but it was worth it. Stopped in for lunch today. While the main menu doesn't clearly mark gluten-free options, the build-your-own bowl station does label ingredients as GF, which I appreciated. I also asked about precautions for gluten allergies, and they said they prepare those orders separately. Even though the place wasn't very busy, it took over 30 minutes to get our food, which was a bit of a wait. Waiter didn't come back to refill our drinks till after I food arrived. So, having not been to Genghis Grill for a year or two, cuz food quality had went down, I am happy to say, the food was good. The options were reasonable. I chose to make-my-own: seafood bowl over cabbage- (Shrimp, Squid, Artificial Crab Legs). I added the seasoning I prefer on each layer of the meat... (garlic, ginger, crushed red peppers.) Then pick from the vegetables, I chose summer yellow squash, Water chestnuts, bean sprouts, and yellow onions). Next option was Sauces and I like mine pretty saucy. Dragon Sauce mixed with Sesame Sauce, and more Garlic water... added a small bit of 3G Sauce to liven it up... and wallah! Asked they add Sesame Seeds to the end. Spectacular Meal! So let's talk about the store front... The restaurant looked cleaned and taken care of. There was one bucket catching rain drips, but clearly marked. The booths and tables were comfortable and well maintained. When we entered, there was no hostess, seems the wait staff rotate to seat guests. When we arrived there were 4 other parties ahead of us, but it went reasonably (about 3-5 min). The bathroom plumbing is fixed. The bathrooms no longer smell like raw sewage (yes I know it was a big turn off for many including me.) Now our waitress, was kind and seemed a bit busy. Her checking in wasn't quite as frequent as we would have preferred. Our drinks sat empty for a while while eating. When she did come by she told us she would be back with refills and was off again. We received refills so not all is lost. Food quality says we will go back and try again. It is Valentine's Day so I don't know if they were busier than expected or just a typical Saturday crowd. We have seen the restaurant empty, and other times busy. This was moderately busy but not packed. I smiled as a group of older ladies was out enjoying a meal and laughing and joking. It's been awhile since I last visited. I felt the urge for a nice custom stir fry with some fried rice. I figured I was in the area so I said why not. Walking in the restaurant I could tell it was a slow Sunday . There weren't many people inside. I thought it was pleasant. By the time hostess finally returned to seat me you'd think there was a party going on. It took awhile before she returned. That being said I had my doubts already before I reached the table. When I reviewed the menu I noticed they got rid of the large bowl. It also came with a nice sticker shock to see the prices went up on both the small and regular bowl, a regular costing as much as the large bowl ironically. I almost lost my appetite right then and there but I figured I was already there I might as well just eat. The selection itself hadn't changed. I was glad for that. I was able to get my usual variety of items for my bowl. The taste was just as great as I'd remembered. The only disappointment I'd have to say is the service and the prices. My waiter didn't refill my drink the entire stay. They didn't check on me til it was time for the check. It was very disappointing. The only saving grace was the food tasted good. Other than that it's probably going to be awhile before I return. read more

Edit: So I called to talk to a manager today to hopefully rectify the situation. He was nice at first and so willing to help said he would reach back out to me in about 5 minutes, but didn't. I called back to see if he received my email of the horrible food and he said he did and with an attitude asked "when do you want us to remake it or do you want to make your own?" "I asked if he could remake order as is and I would pick it up in 20 minutes." I go to pick up the remade order and you can now smell something is burnt. I check the food once I get to the car and the kids food is burnt again. I don't know what is going on with the management or the cooks but it is not like it used to be. The servers are always great though, even when picking up take out. Today was my birthday so we decided to go get Genghis Grill for a picnic at the zoo. I didn't check the bag because we have never had a problem here, and I should have. We go to eat our food and it is burnt not cooked a hair too long, but black burnt. This was so disappointing because it's not like we could go back to hopefully have it fixed. We never ever have had a problem with this location. It was okay not great. Portions were small and very uninspired. I found Mongolian bbq's at the mall much better and far more tasty.

How has this place not been shut down? Raw chicken everywhere, frozen veggies, and understaffed--carrying Siracha bottles around by the lids! Genghis Grill ambiance was clean and attentive. We got sat right away with a party of 7 ppl. Service was slow at first, but it was fine. The server was really nice and patient. We all did Build Your Own Bowls. I really like the fact that they had a wide variety of choices for the base and toppings. I got the Large bowl. I planned to have the rest for leftovers. I enjoyed my bowl. The only complaints are that I wished they replenished the veggies better. When I wanted broccoli, it was all stems, and some of the veggies ended up shrinking so much during the cooking process. This was my 2nd experience after so long ago, so I didn't know what my food would taste like in the end. I suggest tasting the sauces bc I didn't. I didn't know what portions would taste the best either. But I definitely wouldn't add any salt bc mine ended up salty. I added a bunch of chili, kung pao sauce, and 3G sauce, and it turned out mild/medium. While I like char on my food, there was a lot of it on my food. Overall, I enjoyed the taste of everything. But there were just a few details that could have been better. I do appreciate the use of paper Togo boxes. I'll definitely be back to try other combos. read more

Stopped here for lunch when we were in the area. We were just a little ahead of the lunch crowd so . . . being newbies to the Genghis game plan for getting a scrumptious dish set in front of you . . . luckily our server had time to explain the process to get a small, medium or VERY large dish of goodies on your table. I just ordered one of their standards off the menu . . . but my dining companion ordered a medium dish of his choice of ingredients. Kinda like a buffet of meats, veggies, noodles/rice, and sauces. We both were more than satisfied with our selections. We also ordered some chicken pot-stickers to start. All in all, as you can imagine, a little too much food for lunch. But, of course, we took the extras home for dinner. Service was very professional and friendly. Food was good / we will be back "good". Location was smack dab in the middle of all kinds of choices for lunch and dinner. Don't pass Genghis Grill by . . . at least give it a try. You will probably be back. Haven't had Mongolian BBQ in ages and decided to give this place a try. Wasn't disappointed. Server was prompt and well versed in how to navigate this menu. My wife selected the medium bowl and I the large. She got to pick 2 bases (fried rice and udon noodles) and I 3 (fried rice, udon noodles and cabbage. Next up was hitting the line and selecting our proteins, veggies and sauces. The selection is pretty good. Pork, chicken, steak, shrimp, scallops, calamari etc as well as numerous veggies. We like our garlic and heat so we picked those sauces. The chef got to work on cooking while we waited patiently for the end result. Hot off the grill we dug in and I must say it was great. Good meat selection, subpar vegetable selection. Our waitress was decent. This place has gone down hill from what it used to be, which is a shame. ABQ restaurant review time. This time I wanted something "ethnic" that wasn't too spicy. Our friend Google recommended #genghisgrill a build it your own stir fry bowl. All proteins and vegetables are spread out buffet style and the bowl includes whatever you can fit into the bowl plus a base (in this case we both got fried rice and udon noodles). Once you're done at the buffet, you hand your tray and your sauce of choice to the chefs, who cook it in their open kitchen. The most popular size ordered is the regular and at $15 per portion it was quite reasonably sized and quite delicious! It's been a long time since I've been to this place. The last time we went, in Texas, horrible experience! We received gift cards as a result for future visits. I gave them to the kids. Cleaning out the drawers, I found one gift card and..... we'll, here I am. Not many here tonight and it's slow. Maggie the waitress was super awesome! I've been here a few times and it's been okay. Good food decent service, however, it's gotten worse as the years go on. Tonight, we ordered a to-go order at 6:00PM and we were told the food was ready at 6:14PM. We wait inside for 20 minutes and no one has come by to greet us or anything like such. We find an employee to ask as we had been waiting for over 30 minutes at this point and she tells us that our order "probably" hasn't been started yet and that we should be patient because they are busy. A group of 15+ people are waiting at the front of the restaurant meanwhile many other customers that have arrived after us are being served and eating their food. After almost an hour of waiting, we finally get the food we ordered, however, the orders were not correct. Kimchi sauce was absent from the kimchi and another was missing bean sprouts. The only, and I mean only, redeeming factor was a kind worker that gave us free brownies for the missing kimchi sauce. Fast-forward a 30-minute drive home later, we are eating the food and I pull out a hair from a bite I took. The portions were also extremely small compared to a sit-down experience. read more

It was a blast to go through the whiny complaints of people who probably have never worked in the service industry, so I am here to spread some love about our amazing visit. My little sister and I were in town for one night to board a plane tomorrow. We were helped by Tony a very professional, pleasant person who explained the menu thoroughly. The buffet of ingredients was amazing. I appreciate that there were no peanuts (as a previous complainer might not have realized that people might be deathly allergic.) we packed a huge bowl of amazing steak, shrimp and crab. There were 11 sauces to choose from. My concoction was delicious and was prepared quickly. I had a tasty raspberry margarita and little sissy had a Diet Coke. Tony kept our soda and water full. He even brought me a water with my margarita also a bonus. He was very attentive and seemed to be well liked by other tables. The cooks had about 15 orders going at once so I was deeply impressed. We will be back again maybe with the entire family this time! To anyone ready to fire away some complaints because you brought a huge party in last minute, or you had to wait an extra five minutes because you decided to come in during lunch hour, maybe just don't. I was pleasantly surprised by Genghis Grill! I went into this experience completely blind- I was drawn into the restaurant by the "build your own bowl" sign outside. As someone who is trying to eat healthier, I knew this would be a good option since I could pick and choose what ended up in my meal. I opted to go with one of the premade bowls (the Bangkok bowl) and subbed out cabbage for the udon. The vegetables were crisp and the meat was good, and I had plenty of leftovers for the next day. My only complaint was with the ordering process- I stopped in for takeout and explicitly asked to do the "create your own bowl." The server kept directing me to the menu as if that wasn't an option, so I ended up just ordering off the menu. It wasn't until after my order was placed that I saw people up making their own bowl, and I asked her about it but at that point she said that I couldn't just go make my own since I already paid. Soo good. I prefer the other location, but okay this one is newer. Even witnessed a fight here once between a couple (let me tell ya- there was food and drinks flying everywhere). Anyways, we had a coupon for a small bowl with a drink, but the lunch special was cheaper anyways. Today, I got the cajun chicken, sirloin tip, bacon, meatball, pepperoni, shrimp, calamari, garlic lime white fish, mushroom, potato, onion, pineapple, egg, and lemon pepper with peanut sauce and udon noodles. They tell you not to retrograde back in the line (or else a $5 upcharge), but that's what the girl in front of me did. A large piece of my sirloin tip was pink on the inside, so the server brought back several large pieces of tasty sirloin in return. Bowl was enough even for a second day. Really disappointed. Unlike BD's Mongolian Grill and Huhot Mongolian Grill, this does not have an all you can eat option. I ordered the pre-made Pad Thai and there was no sauce on my order- when I did get extra sauce, it tasted nothing like Pad Thai. There was plenty of staff on duty and we came well before a rush, but we weren't helped for 10 minutes. 5 different people said "someone will be right with you" though and then proceeded to continue ignoring us. The second star is for our server because he was really nice and trying his best. Otherwise I'd give this a 1. Dishes are expensive and the food and experience weren't worth it. read more

Best bowl I've had was during this quarantine today! Usually I love putting my own bowl together- with the quarantine, a worker is doing it based on your instructions. Here's the positive though- they are wearing gloves, meaning they are able to pack more food into the bowl that I ever have been able to! Went about a month ago got a medium bowl loved it! Service was a little slow but all in all it was a pleasant experience. Went 2 weeks ago service was great and friendly. It was a busy night so the line took a little while but all in all no big deal. Made friends with others in line and chatted while we waited. Where things went down hill was my stomach felt funny after eating and progressively got worse as the night went on. Around 2am I was throwing up. So not sure if it was food poisoning or a stomach bug... but I won't be eating here for a while... the thought makes my stomach queasy. The restaurant and bathrooms are very clean and the restaurant interior looks fantastic. You can order meals off of the menu or make your own bowl. You choose from a variety of proteins, fresh vegetables, seasonings, and sauces. It is slightly expensive. But I think the price point is set so that they guarantee that they don't lose $. If you really wanted to you could probably load $15 worth of meat into a bowl. You first pick your protein and the move down the line. Once you pick your protein and move down the line, they will not allow you to move back and put in more protein. They say the reason is for sanitation which I can understand. They don't want raw protein mixing with vegetables. You can pile your bowl on as high as you want and they will let you know also. The restaurant does offer a happy hour Monday to Friday where they offer discounted prices. The food tastes good, it is just slightly expensive. They have a bar and where ever you sit you will have a server with table service. The restaurant itself doesn't reek on the inside of smoke, oil, and grease because they have good filtration units. So you won't leave smelling horrible like if you'd go to other Asian restaurants. read more
