BE ADVISED IF YOU ARE RECEIVING PRENATAL GENETIC TESTING IN YOUR 1ST TRIMESTER (NT ULTRASOUND & BLOOD SPECCIMEN to be exact) from the Genetic Center BE INFORMED. The Genetic Center DOES NOT UTILIZE THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH CENTERS STANDARDS. RATHER, THEY UTILIZE THEIR OWN "CONSERVATIVE" RESULTS to recommend further exams and test that are NOT COVERED OR EVEN NEEDED!!!
1. Know that the state of California will only cover any further genetic testing if the NT Ultra Sound results are 3.5mm and above (positive) and/or after the blood specimen results are processed by the state of CA and come back positive.
2. The genetic center uses their own conservative standards, of 3.0mm and above for positive or high risk, for the NT US and will push a CVS procedure as well as fetal EKG's, WITHOUT using state standards or receiving the blood protein results from the required blood specimen.
They use their own conservative number, not the states, to push further test EVEN AFTER THE NT RESULTS ARE IN FACT NORMAL.
In turn, this procedure WILL NOT BE PAID for by the state of CA AND THE GENETIC CENTER DO NOT INFORM YOU OF THIS. Therefore, your insurance company, or Medical, and ultimately YOU will be charged for RISKY procedures which cost THOUSANDS of dollars ($5,000 is what I have estimated for Doctor, Outpatient suite, lab fees etc.).
3. Please visit the California Department of Public Health website or contact them directly, or even discuss numbers and results with your OB BEFOR you go to the genetic testing site. This will allow you to be informed and not fall pray to deceptive practices.

This is based off of my personal experience. Thankfully, I am a medical professional who always questions medical advise. My experience with the GC caused me pain and anguish for no reason at all until I informed myself! The worst part is when I informed my OB at my next apt that the genetic Center stated my NT US was positive and they had pushed a CVS and prenatal EKG's she was appalled!!! She then went to her office and brought back the results she received form the Genetic Center which stated my results for the NT Ultrasound were "NORMAL". I also showed her their request from my insurance provider for a STAT approval for the CVS procedure! To say the least, my OB was not even aware that they had requested this procedure which was NOT NECESSARY AND IN FACT DECEPTIVELY PUSHED BEHIND MY DOCTOR AND MY BACK!!!
My advise to you is to please, please, please be informed and keep your doctor in the loop!! I went home and researched and spoke to my OB as well as the Department of Health to verify the NT standards and I would suggest you do the same too. Do not fall pray to deceptive, and in my opinion, unethical practices please! read more
