When I moved back to Southern California and had to relearn how to drive, it was a stressful experience for both me and the family and friends who helped me practice. They were genuinely nervous riding with me at times, and I was especially anxious about lane changes, reversing, and parking. Oxford Driving School was able to fit me in for a same-week lesson despite my full-time work schedule, and the booking process was very smooth. I especially wanted to give my instructor, Chie, a shout-out. She was sweet, kind, encouraging, and very attentive to safety throughout our drive. She gave me clear, honest feedback about what I still needed to improve, particularly with parking, lane changes, speed, and traffic checks, while explaining corrections in a way that was constructive. I also appreciated that she struck a good balance between instruction and independence. She kept a close eye on what I was doing and stepped in when appropriate, but she also gave me opportunities to practice judging traffic gaps and making driving decisions for myself. She was sincerely invested in helping me understand how to reverse and park correctly rather than simply getting through the lesson. And somehow, she was in a great mood on a Saturday morning before 10 AM! As someone who is definitely not a morning person, I consider that a colossal feat. I had a very different experience with a driving school when I was a teenager, so I'm especially grateful for how positive and constructive this lesson was. They were communicative, friendly and helpful throughout the months I worked with them. Shout out America! My driving instructor was Angie. Her patience and calm demeanour not only helped me learn how to drive in California and pass the test, but also how to manage my anxiety in taking the test and on the road, so much so that I almost regret passing cause now our driving lessons are in the past. I took about 6-8 lessons over 4-6 months and used their vehicle for the driving test. I would recommend taking 2-4 lessons and then consulting with your driving instructor about how many more you may need, as it depends on each person. Book lessons far in advance cause they're popular! And space out as needed to afford them financially, and if possible, practice with a personal vehicle in between lessons.
