I wanted to replace my front door lock with one that was keyless. My daughter had just had her front door lock replaced, and her recommendation was to HAVE SOMEONE ELSE do the installation! I called Gene's at 9pm expecting to leave a message, and while I was on the phone doing just that, I received a text from Matthew asking how he could help. I chose to go into their shop to pick out my new lock, and with Amber's help, I picked out a new lock. Amber asked me questions regarding lock functions (camera, telephone access, lock color, handle type....) which were in some cases things I had not even considered, and we homed in on the right lock for me. We scheduled the installation date, and at the last minute I had to reschedule, and they were very accommodating in changing my appointment. The day of the installation, Matthew was prompt and did an excellent job installing the new lock, keying the lock to my existing key and setting up the entry code on the keypad. These guys are good. Small family run business, knows what they're doing. I needed a key made for my 06 Accord, but already had the key (an OEM Acura key), which locksmiths don't like, cuz they can't guarantee quality (bad keys don't cut well). The guy explained this out in a clear way that demonstrated his experience. I get the impression he's had some bad experiences with cheap aftermarket keys and customers who thought it was his fault. I promised to pay whether it worked or not (you should too if you bring your own key). Anyway, he was unswayed by the potential difficulty level of making an Acura key work with a Honda. He was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Had me in and out in 20 minutes, less than he predicted. I called both Criswell and Shockley Honda and was treated a little like a criminal for having my own key. Not only that but they wanted me to set up an appt a week in advance. The price quoted at the dealerships was about the same I paid Gene's. Walk in, walk out. New key works like a charm. I saved their number in my phone. read more

Gene's Lock Service is run by racists. My mother, a 60 year old Chinese immigrant widow who works for the US government, speaks fluent English and has lived in this country for over 35 years, came to this business a few months back to return a lock that did not work. She was told that she would only be allowed the return if she paid $15, instead of just being allowed to return the untouched item for the full $50. Even if this policy goes for every item, she was not treated with patience, understanding, and respect when inquiring about it. Instead, she was yelled at and threatened to be called the police on, which I doubt would have happened if she was a white woman with no accent. Intimidation of an elderly lady is disgusting behavior for a business. The worst thing was that the father yelled at my mom while his son was also working there, which is unacceptable. My mother was so afraid that she left because she was worried that there would be a gun pulled on her. Gross. Do not go here if you are a decent individual. read more

While in town visiting my mom, we locked ourselves out of the house after a morning out with my four month old. I was out of bottles and my little guy was due to eat in 20 minutes. I quickly called Gene's for assistance, anticipating a meltdown from my little one at any moment. Matt answered the phone and quickly assessed the issue and said he could drop everything he was doing and be to us within 15 minutes. Upon arrival, he assessed the door and had it open in less than 10 minutes. All the while my baby remained calm and I was able to get inside just in time for his 1:30 feeding. I was extremely impressed with this company. I had just finished moving into my new home in Frederick and promptly locked my keys inside. My friend and I were exhausted and thought that this mishap was going to ruin our relaxing evening. But we called Matthew Schoonover, and he met us at my house within 30 minutes! He was able to pick the lock and re-key it, which I had been planning to do anyway, and then provide me with numerous copies of the new key--all within less than a half-hour. It was astonishing. On top of all that, Matthew was a super-friendly guy, willing to answer all our questions and even offer advice on fixing a sticky door. He told us that he's on call 24/7 because his company is small, but he didn't seem bothered by that in the slightest. If you ever need a locksmith, you can't do better than this company. While rushing to see my husband in a nursing and rehab center, and after a long, busy day, I locked myself out of my condo. I couldn't believe it. I googled the nearest locksmith near my home and was told: "sorry, our guys are out of the county". And "sorry, we only do cars". I called this morning after locking myself out of my house. I was scheduled to bring a cake to a 90 year old's birthday party...needless to say, I was so upset. Matt came out in about 15 minutes, unlocked me, then unlocked me AGAIN, five minutes later when I grabbed the wrong set of keys, as I was in such a hurry to get this cake to where it was going. He couldn't have been nicer, told me about a lock box to keep a spare key in, so I'm going by his shop this week to buy a box. Seriously, who locks themselves out twice in one day?!?! These folks came to my house within an hour after I called them. I needed to change the locks on all my doors . (It's a long story. I won't bore you with the lurid details.) Anyway, the technician could have taken me to the cleaners, if he had a mind to do so. He could have pulled all the old locks and replaced them with new ones -- which would have cost me several hundred dollars. Instead, he offered me a much less expensive alternative. He simply reconfigured the locking mechanism on all my locks and charged me accordingly. The whole thing came to less than a hundred bucks--a bargain, in my opinion. It's so nice to find businesses that deal fairly with customers. I wholeheartedly recommend this one. read more

I lost both the original and spare keys to my car. The last time this happened (yes I'm irresponsible), I went through my dealership to have a new one made. The dealership charged me for a tow plus several hundred dollars to make a new key (even without the fob remote) which took a few days. This time I contacted Gene's on a Sunday and it turned out they could make me a new key for much less, by Monday, plus a spare for free, AND because of the model/year they didn't even need my car to be towed there. It literally cost me 10% of the dealership price and was faster. Amazing. Copying the rest of my set of keys was inexpensive too. Plus Matt is cool. Highly recommend. read more

Big help, lost my one and only key to my car. I called dealership who told me key would cost over $500 and I would have to get it towed to them so that they could make a key for my vehicle. My vehicle was located in a parking garage in downtown Frederick and a tow truck could not get to my vehicle because of the ceiling heights . A coworker told me about Genes locksmith and after talking to them and getting a price the answer was clear. They did a great job and were able to get to my vehicle without me having to tow it anywhere. They were very polite and helpful the whole time I would recommend them to everyone. read more

I highly recommend Gene's Lock Service. I called them about a month before closing on a new house to ask about getting the locks re-keyed. Matt told me that they could come out the day after we closed and to text him pictures of the locks when we were at the house for the final walkthrough. I assumed that this brief conversation would have been forgotten about by a month later, but nope, I was wrong. Matt was fantastic. He arrived sooner than the original estimate (within 30 minutes), was able to communicate via text and on the phone as I had bad cell reception, and he was extremely kind and professional. Locking yourself out of your home can cause immediate panic. Matt was calm and helped make me feel reassured throughout the process. On his way out, he also gave me advice on my deadbolt and was able to give me a hand prying it loose from dried paint. Great service and very timely. Scheduled a requested to install a keypad lock on the website on a Tuesday late afternoon and got an appt for the following Tuesday. Matt called me on Thursday morning the same week and said that he could be at my house in 15 minutes due to a cancellation. Gene's responded to our emergency situation within 1 hour. Matt went to work quickly and was finished in under 1/2 hour. We had to change our front, back and warehouse entry doors. Matt keyed them all alike so it reduced the number of keys we for our staff. Matt was also very knowledgable and helpful regarding a door hinge issue we are having. Called to find out about having locks rekeyed for our new home with only one day notice. Both times I called to get information the staff was friendly and helpful. When my daughter lost her only car key to her 2010 Ford, her dealer said they couldn't help, but to contact Ford, who said the car was too old to make a new key, but to call Gene's Lock Service. I made an later appointment with Gene's to give us time to locate the key.
