So I tried the Gene's at the new location which is more convenient for me. And it's the same great sandwiches but what's most impressive is the wonderful service. The cashier, Terri was the sweetest most personable and kind hostess. I would return here just because of her service but the sandwiches are great too. Took my mom to Gene's Grinders for Mother's Day because we both love a good sandwich. The bread is made fresh daily in house and you can taste the love in every bite. All of the staff are so nice, friendly and accommodating which made for an excellent dining experience. I got the cheese sandwich and my mom had the Gene's Special, 10/10 for both highly recommend. Saw an ad on Insta for a deli in Monrovia and had to go immediately! My fiancé took me and we were surprised to find Gene's Grinders, having passed by so many times, thinking it was a meat market shop with the name having "grinder" in it and all. We now know "grinder" is a term for a sandwich shop and both had that "oooohhhhh" look on our faces and had a good laugh, haha! We ordered online with our BOGO code to get 1 sandwich for free. We ordered a Large 12" Meatball Special and Large 12" Pastrami Dip sandwich for $16.25. The $16.25 is the regular price for 1 sandwich and we got the 2nd one for free. Such a great deal for our first time! Upon walking in, we informed the team members working there that we made an online order and told them the name on the order. "Coming right out," they said! They are very upbeat and friendly here! The sandwiches are indeed large and 12" and as long as my forearm. Both sandwiches were packed with meat and were very heavy in weight. I loved the condiments and sauces in each one, and I liked how we got one hot and cold sandwich to try both. My fiance loved it so much he ate most of our 2 sandwiches but for the parts I saved, I was able to enjoy it and be full since it was so packed! So many layers of cured meats, fresh crisp lettuce and tomatoes, tangy pickles, and their signature house dressing, all perfectly tucked into a soft, toasted not too dense roll. Every bite is bursting with flavor, and the portion size is generous enough to leave you fully satisfied. I was only able to eat half of my sandwhich. One less star for sticky tables and lack of napkins. The staff at Gene's Grinders is exceptional, very welcoming, friendly, and always ready to accommodate special requests. This establishment has been around for almost 50 years. The landlord decided not to renew their lease. The owner, Andy comes in the morning to bake their bread. You can actually taste the love, hard work & dedication that they poured in this sandwich shop. The staff is so nice & friendly every time you are there. If I could rate 1,000,000 stars, I would. I lived in Monrovia and never tried their shop. They moved to Duarte, I moved to Duarte so now I had to. I tried their pastrami sandwich first. As a die hard, "if I want a sandwich, I'll make it at home" aficionado, I was skeptical. However, after the first bite I was taken aback. How can a sandwich be this good? This might be witchcraft. Then my MIL decides to try the BOGO deal and asks me what I want. I told her grab me a turkey one...still skeptical. (Mind you, they messed up her order but the crew made sure to fix it and she said they went above and beyond). I bite into the turkey sando and there's only one way to describe it. You know that episode of SpongeBob where he makes the krabby patty and tucks in the pickles under the cheese so softly? That's what it's like to bite into a sandwich from Genes Grinders! Whoever is making them is spongebob. You can taste the quality and love. The meat, veggies and bread taste soooo fresh and delicious. I have recommended this place to everyone. We had an hour and a half for lunch and started scouting Yelp for nearby places. This place was the first to pop up for lunch, and the reviews look decent and seems like a great place for a quick bite, so we wanted to try it out. It's located on Myrtle ave, with a parking lot around and plenty of street parking. We parked and you can either enter the place indoor or outdoor setting, we chose indoor. Looking at the menu, there's a lot that we wanted to try. However, we ended up ordering the large pastrami grinder, large genes special, side of fries, and Diet Coke drink. The staff are very friendly and welcoming! As we waited for our order we can hear them shouting out orders and many times they were customized grinders such as extra meat, add mayo, no cheese, etc. I wanted to try their grinders as is and then perhaps I'd customize it as well. I started reading the menu more and noticed that for the grinders, you can ask for more condiments such as mustard, mayo, vinegar, pickles, onions, chili flakes). When our order was ready, the staff was very nice and also offered pepperoncinis and you can have more if you need more. We also got free refills on our drinks. The sandwiches were packed with meat. Pastrami was definitely delicious, it was juicy and well seasoned. The genes special had so many layers of meat, one of the meat was a little spicy, I'm not good with spicy food usually, but it was just a hint of spicy. Still very delicious and I ate the whole half. The bread was chewy and soft, delicious on its own. Fries were crispy and definitely great with the grinders. Overall, very delicious and satisfied! We got a stamp card as well so once we order ten we'll get a free small grinder! Unfortunately, they no longer have a public restroom.
